Lubavitch in the US during the Shoah was a small group which lacked the clout to do as much as the major Jewish organizations such the Agudah or the Vaad Hatzolah. The only "trouble" had to do with the disbursment of moneys that were being sent to Shanghai by the Vaad Hatzolah and has been discussed on this blog site on prior occasions. Your allegation that the FR was being promoted as Moshiach at that time is a complete fabrication.The FR did come out with the declaration that "lealter letshuvah lealter legeulah" which for reasons beyond my ken were considered blasphemous by some.
Anon3, You are showing a real lack of historical knowledge.Your claim that Agudah in America had "clout" at the time is a joke.Agudah equaled a Yid called Mike Tress, who managed to do an unbelievable ammount with little help or "clout" besides a couple of young Pirchei boys based out of the Agudah shul at 616 Bedord Ave in Williamsburg. Lubavitch on the other hand proved that they were able to save the Frierdiger Rebbe from Poland during the War! with an entourage(!) and many possessions that were important to him. Lubavitch in America was a small group of real shomrei shabbes chasidim at the time, but actually there were many Nusach Ari shuls and people who had Lubavitch backrounds and had strayed.The fact is that when The Rebbe visited New York and Chicago and other cities in 1929 thousands of people were there to meet him.
This thread has strayed way to far, there is not a single comment addressing the actual post, which links to a very interesting and well researched article. This isn't the usual hagiography but a well written piece of history, drawn from real sources. It makes a nice change from the usual opinionated hogwash that you get in blogosphere.
