Classic "Rav"

4 short audio clips of the late Rav Yoseph B. Soloveitchik of Boston. Each "microphone" is a link to another audio clip, which starts automatically. So if you're at work or some other place where you don't want people to know that you're "oofgeklert" and listen to the "Rav," lower your speakers volume BEFORE you click on the microphone. We learn several things from these clips, including the fact that the Rav hut keinmol kein "zemiros" nit gezogt."

  5. i"m speechlees of the hipocrisy this blog became to be.

what is the comments option made for if not to comment? being lubabitch is one thing but why hate belz?

JB hah lots of good stuff on chassidim as well, but on lubabich except on y"t kislev 1980, even then then he regretted, unlike belz.

  6. I just got tired of that line about Belz being a "small town near Lemberg"

it got a little lame after 4 or 5 times.

  7. was it rather a big town -:)

    jb was nebach a product of the confused enviorement in which he grew up. c o n f u s e d.

  11. Why dont you think the Rav deserves event the basic courtesy of having an "r" in front of this name?

today, every low life gets a "reb" in the charedi papers, but R Chaim Brisker's most brilliant grandchild, the leader of a major segment of Orthodox Judaism doesnt even deserve that.

you people (bobov chusid, grainom) are sick and twisted.

  15. @grainom - When R Shach died I sat on the floor for three minutes.

  16. bobov chusid is indeed right belz is near lemberg and is indeed a very small town, but yet I still don't connect the dots.

what he's probaly trying to say is that "doctor rabbi" jb had a modern mind even though brisk is not big at all. there he's more like a proffeser than a rabbi.

RJBS was a Goan Adir and a great thinker, so far the greatest pupil of his grandfathers shita. But no qualification to be a Manhig, his intelligence influenced him to see both sides of the story, it is good for a geshmake shmooz in a Starbucks, but not to built a Medina.

  23. The chachmei Chelm are debating the caliber of the rav. Hundeds of seforim (shiurim ,hashkofa , drush etc) by and about him , hundreds of tapes, studies about him, thousands of talmidim of various kinds,, and unpublished materials.
The debate is whether you people accept his Zionism , if you accept his friendly attitude towards secualr studies, his modern dress ,a nd his modern ways.
One has a clear right an dobligation to disagree but not to criticize the man as a scholar and Jew.
Several men created the Orthodoxy we know : Rabbi Soloveitchik, Rabbi A. Kotler, the 2 Lubavitcher rebbes, The Satmarer rebbe and Mr Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz.( I am not discounting others like rav Moshe , rav Henkin, the Zelimer rav, the Bobover rav,Rabbi Gedlaya Schorr, Rabbi Joseph Lookstein, Dr. Belkin,Rabbi Hutner, and rabbi Teitz)Each one stressed a certain nekuda that created a multi faceted orthodoxy we know. We need not agree with their views but recognize their ledership and contributions to Orthodoxy.

  24. Thank you to those who pointed out sources for full length lectures of RJBS. Problem is - who will help figure out which classes these particular clips are from?
    Tzig?

  25. One very noteworthy thing, especially for those who have heard his talks in English, is the sheer speed of his Yiddish. Despite the heavy accent, I always imagined that he was totally comfortable speaking in English. Yet these clips really show how much Yiddish was his mameh loshon. It flows like a rushing stream. It's a farginigen to listen to, like great poetry.

    Thank you tzig.

  26. Yehupitz, that's true, but although his spoken English wasn't fast (he was also older) it was word perfect. His vocabulary and command of grammar was excellent. This can be seen in the written essays as well. He understood that to have an influence on the next Dor, it wasn't good enough to come across as a fossil from a previous generation who couldn't string first class sentences together. I wish he was still around.

  27. Forgot to mention, one of the Rav's little eyniklech couldn't understand why there was no Zmiros. The Rav wasn't a fundamentalist; he started singing Zmiros after that when the eynikel was there.
