bobov chusid is indeed right belz is near lemberg and is indeed a very small town, but yet I still don't connect the dots.

The chachmei Chelm are debating the caliber of the rav. Hundeds of seforim (shiurim ,hashkofa , drush etc) by and about him , hundreds of tapes, studies about him, thousands of talmidim of various kinds,, and unpublished materials.
ReplyDeleteThe debate is whether you people accept his Zionism , if you accept his friendly attitude towards secualr studies, his modern dress ,a nd his modern ways.
One has a clear right an dobligation to disagree but not to criticize the man as a scholar and Jew.
Several men created the Orthodoxy we know : Rabbi Soloveitchik, Rabbi A. Kotler, the 2 Lubavitcher rebbes, The Satmarer rebbe and Mr Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz.( I am not discounting others like rav Moshe , rav Henkin, the Zelimer rav, the Bobover rav,Rabbi Gedlaya Schorr, Rabbi Joseph Lookstein, Dr. Belkin,Rabbi Hutner, and rabbi Teitz)Each one stressed a certain nekuda that created a multi faceted orthodoxy we know. We need not agree with their views but recognize their ledership and contributions to Orthodoxy.

One very noteworthy thing, especially for those who have heard his talks in English, is the sheer speed of his Yiddish. Despite the heavy accent, I always imagined that he was totally comfortable speaking in English. Yet these clips really show how much Yiddish was his mameh loshon. It flows like a rushing stream. It's a farginigen to listen to, like great poetry.

Yehupitz, that's true, but although his spoken English wasn't fast (he was also older) it was word perfect. His vocabulary and command of grammar was excellent. This can be seen in the written essays as well. He understood that to have an influence on the next Dor, it wasn't good enough to come across as a fossil from a previous generation who couldn't string first class sentences together. I wish he was still around.

Forgot to mention, one of the Rav's little eyniklech couldn't understand why there was no Zmiros. The Rav wasn't a fundamentalist; he started singing Zmiros after that when the eynikel was there.
