Reformers in Cincinnati funding Yeshivos in דער ליטא

Hirshel

History has shown that our brothers the so-called "misnagdim" are very astute to follow trends. After catching on to the trend that is popular at the time, they soon claim ownership. Our era is an era of extremes, we nebech have the OTD phenomenon with kids falling from all kinds of house and groups, and at the same time we have the height of zealotry; zalonim and aronim try to catch up to the others, Rav Shteinman party and Rav Auerbach's party are out to show who is more kanoi, who has more chumrahs. The misnagdim realized that the youth likes extremes so they are jumping to the forefront, as if they invented Kanoas and chumrahs. So far both parties are still licking the bones they get from the Zionist Government, but they act as if they are kanoim on issues like that the Rav of Boston is de-legitimized because he did not go along with the קנאות flavor of the day.  Yesterday I saw this siddur of an original old time Litvak. He learned in Salaboka, like Mussar Slabodka, still saw Reb Yisroel Salanter and wrote alot to Reb Yitzchok Elchonan, someone he knew personally. He arrived to Cincinnati early and became a popular orator, saying that at least the 3-4 hours that he darshens the crowd sits and doesn't desecrate the Shabbos...He befriended Reverend Issac Weisz, the president and rabbi of the Reform Movement, who is cursed as Yemach shemoi by every frum Jew. But shockingly, the holy yeshivos in the Lita were collecting money from his congregation! and Weisz himself helped all the Roshei yeshivos! for a while he was even mad at their chutzpah to attack him and yet to come for him for money, but he still went with them to the wealthy to help them collect money! I don't think that this fact is mentioned anywhere in the Artscroll /Hamodia universe Now I see why the Lita had so much Shekotzim: Koach Hapoel B'Nif'al.....

I hope my point is clear...

  1. Is that Purim Teyreh, or what?

Lubavitch takes money from all kinds of avaryanim, chazer fressers, notzrim, etc...but you criticize Litvaks because some meshulochim from like 130 years ago took money from non-frum people (who says the Yeshivos they were collecting for knew that part of it, by the way?)?

The pot calling the kettle black....

"Now I see why.....so much Shekotzim"

Is that why Lubavitch has so many shkotzim today, because they get loads of $ from mechalelei Shabbos, chazer fressers, etc.? Koach hapoel banifal...Does that explain the churban of Lubavitch today?

  2. As A lubavitcher I do find the article distasteful.
the Litvishe Yeshivos which collect funds in America where no different to all other Yeshivos, they took money from Jews most of whom came from orthodox homes in Europe and had a nostalgic feeling for the "Alte Heim"
Further, the anti-Chabad tirade of the above-featured writer is uncalled for, spiteful and inconsistent with the spirit of Chodesh Elul

  3. You should tell your correspondent that holding on to such bitterness is not good for his health. I question the wisdom in giving him a platform.

And your correspondent tries to libel the Roshei Yeshiva by implying that they went around with Weisz. But the text clearly says that it was meshulachim, not Roshei Yeshiva.

  4. I imagine שבלולים is the writer's own word, not the word his father and Weisz used, and they really meant oysters or clams, which are צדפות in Ivrit, but whose Loshon Kodesh name, if they ever had one, is unknown.

R Finkelstein may not have been up on his biology, but he'd surely know that it's an explicit posuk that שבלולים are mobile. כמו שבלול תמס יהלוך. Dovid curses his enemies to be like a snail that melts as it goes along (i.e. leaves a slime trail behind it).

I wonder what either of them would have made of Barnacle Geese.

  5. Yes, a snail or a slug, which leaves a slime trail, so that it appears to be melting away as it goes, and if it goes far enough it will melt down to nothing. Clearly the conversation cannot have been about them. It must have been about oysters, but if the word שבלולים had been used R Finkelstein would have immediately retorted that it's an open pasuk that they are mobile.

  7. Who is Talking

"Lubavitch takes money from all kinds of avaryanim, chazer fressers, notzrim, etc...but you criticize Litvaks"

  8. Heshy,
I got a nice chuckle, and some interesting history. The chuckle, because the poor slob who wrote the email (hopefully not you masquerading )is describing current Lubavitch practice of taking money from anyone, frum, frei, areilim, getting people to sign over yerushas against family wishes,vechulu....
Maybe the writer is a Snag just trying to bring the point out??

  10. Hirshel,

I do not appreciate my name being used by other people.

    So-called Russian Chusid,

"Lubavitch takes money from all kinds of avaryanim, chazer fressers, notzrim"
The only reason Lubavitch does it , is beacuse their Rabbeim were matir it.
If you telling me Lubavitch is not in Chumra business, you do not know nothing about Lubavitch. Most probably you knowledge of chasidus comes from some American BT. Enjoy it, but do not call it chasidus or Lubavitch.

  11. The writer of this introduction is none other than Louis Finkelstein, the head of JTS!

  14. Its Elul and some of us start saying the yud gimmel middos one of them is Emes ,Chazal tell us mah hoo emes af atah Emes. The vilna Goan opposed certain things that people were doing in his time some matters that we don't understand due to his greatness in Torah and our aniyus in Torah. The Mesorah of the Gra was passed down by his talmidim all the way down to our present times where these leaders say you don't have to learn these seforim or do things that chasidim do.The mussar world is a world that is very rich with a lot of different approaches I have heard mashpiam in Chabad talk about mussar they obviously we're spoon fed some propaganda very immature they are grown adults you could tell from the way they were talking they are in need of mussar works even after their chassidus.Chassidus isn't accepted this is a Mesorah not from a rebbe who has the opposite Mesorah so it's invalid.Even if you bring stories from your seforim that chassidus was accepted there isn't a chiyuv to believe them also you openly see the leaders of the non chasidish acting in a non chasidish fashion also the chasidim some say changed because of the opposition.

  17. All said Chabad's so called real BT's sucess rate is less than 1% and on the expense of how many FFB's melted into the world of MO brand melting pot?

Chabad is Orthodox, but Jewish students it caters to are not

    By Menachem Wecker

"Only 15 of the 2,400 respondents said they joined ranks and identify as Chabad. About 88 percent of those who visited Chabad at least once do not identify as Orthodox."

“The data would say that Chabad is telling the truth. That’s less than 1 percent,” Rosen says. These are Chabad info/lists."

“It’s really about these personal relationships. It’s like your personal rabbi.” (or psychological therapist).
