Shazar's Rosh Yeshivah Yarmulke

Was it לכבוד Zushe Partisan, a former Novardiker? I don't believe the Novardiker wore them, maybe it was too חיצוניות'דיג for them.

Did he consider himself a Rosh Yeshivah being that he was once Sar HaChinuch?

  1. It is a misconception that such a yarmulka was reserved for Roshei Yeshiva. Years ago it was worn by various types of Jews, including baalei batim. Take a look at old photos, some of which are online, of frumme yidden, amcho, and you will see it.

Over time, it fell out of use among the hamon am for the most part, and left wearing it were some of the most conservative Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshiva, which led to this misconception. However, in Shazar's generation, it was still used by the hamon am as well.

by the 1960's (almost) no BaaliBos wore the tall Yarmulke, unless he lived in a dreamland, thinking he was a Choshuver Yid. Maybe Shazar did just that.

Jews in Russia wore such yarmolkas even later than 60s my great grandfather Yankel Kushnir wore such yarmolka in shule even in early 1980s and he was a simple shoemaker.

  4. Hirshel - some old-timers still may have had one in their wardrobe from the good ol days. Maybe that is what happened in this case.

  5. As Sar Hachinuch, Shazar probably qualified for a modern-day mesis umediach about which the Torah says 'lo sachmol alav'.

    See Rambam, Sanhedrin 11:5

  6. Why not quote the RamBam, and not surmise that he would qualify?

why did they stop wearing it? They kept the Kapote, why not the Yarmulke? I'd love to see Reb Malkiel wearing one of those!
