The Vizhnitzer Rebbe, the Ahavas Yisroel, was niftar on 2 Sivan 5696. Pictured are the AH with his cousin the Kopycynitzer Rebbe, Reb Yitzchok Meir, zt"l. Notice one thing you don't see much these days: modern-looking chassidim "hanging out" with the Rebbe and swallowing every word. I thank the anonymous donor of the pictures.

ReplyDeleteHow pleasant a sight to see 2 Great Rebbeim meeting and not a piece of silver or fancy dishes on the table, as opposed to these days, when we are constantly shown pictures of Rebbeim meeting with luxurious pieces of silver in front of them.

Modern looking Chassidim - these are Oberlandische Yidden who liked Peylische Gutte Yidden .Sometimes Jews from Germany and Viennese Charedim.
ReplyDeleteIn the resorts of Central Europe (where most of the rebbische pictures after WW1 originate) Ashkenzaim from Germany and Hungary predominated.
After all how many harepashne Yidden from Tarnow, Radom or Bendin could afford vacations. Even the local gevir was usually a "melech evyon".
In Poland if you did not have a beard you did not wear a bekische, and if you were clean shaven you did not have long peyoth behind the ears.
This custom stems from a different region.
How is this Kapishnetzer related to R. Zalman Gurarie's father-in-law?
ReplyDeleteWhile on the topic, I don't think that it would be possible for a chassidishe rebbe now to take a Lubavitcher son-in-law.
This Kopycynitzer was Reb Zalman's Shver's father. You may be right, but they wouldn't take a Litvisher son in law either, like the Amshinover took.

ReplyDeleteThe Amshinover Rebbe took a litvisher son-in-law when he was in Shanghai. In Poland he most likely would not have.
On the other hand, it was bashert in both instances.
The litvack's beard was definitely bashert.
ReplyDeleteThere were other rebbes in Poland who had Lubavitcher eydemer. The Zalmanov family married into the Vorker (ofeler Rebbe) dynasty. Th Gourary's also married into the Radziner (Leiner) rebbe's family.
ReplyDeleteThe Tzemach Tzedek took a Radziminer eynikel (Gutterman) as his son in law.
Why would a Lubavitcher want to be a CHADBAN in another chassidus today ?
