Got 2 Days to Spare? See Historic Buffalo, NY!

There are those that have made it their life's work to travel around the US and Canada and visit the final resting places of righteous men that have long been forgotten and that have no lineage to speak of. Reb Yonah Landau is one such character. Despite the fact that he apparently visits Montefiore Cemetery in Queens and doesn't visit the 2 Rebbes buried there... One such forgotten Tzaddik is interred in Buffalo, NY and promised that anybody that would come to his Tziyun on his yahrtzeit - the 13th of Cheshvan - and present a request would have that wish granted within a year! Reb Eliyahu Yosef ben Reb Gedalia Aron was a ben-achar-ben of the Holy Baal Shem Tov and arrived on these shores waaaay back in 1897, thereby earning the title of "First Rebbe buried in America." The gentleman who took the pictures seems to have an ample amount of time to spare for such trips. I can only say "Ich bin ehm Mekane."

Looks like they figured for a Kleine Rebbe is genug a kleine ohel...

Very imaginative sign nusach composers...

Attention! אין means "in," און means "and." Don't they teach that in Cheder?!

Like I said, they weren't very gracious with the bricks back then...

Business is hopping!

  1. In Poland most of the Ohel's rather small (In Vilna the Gra's is so tight, it's hard to even stand insides!)

  2. There are many huge talmidei chachomom and talmidim of the great of greats who are buried here in the U.S. from the 18 and 19 hundreds. There were talmidim of volozhen and Reb chaim Brisker and the Beis Haleivi in the U.S.. children of great admorim were here too. Today noone ever heard of these people. Check out www.kevarim.com

  4. Why the cheap shot at R'Yoineh Landau?
    You know him, at all?
All you did was copy pics from Chadrei Chareidim

  5. How is he a descendant of the Baal Shem? The tombstone states that he's a descendant of the kedoshei Slavita and Linz.

  7. Why the knock on the size of the ohel?
    A little petty.
    My turn to be petty.
What is "Mishtatech"? Also, shouldn't it be "Vu men effent", not "Vi men effent"? Doesn't "oifen" need an apostrophe?

  8. Reb Gedalya of Linitz was a Talmid of the Besh"t.

The Monostrich'er Rebbe who came to America after a progrom on Uman was a cousin of this Rebbe and also a ben achar ben of the תשואות חן

  10. Wow Tzig, do you have a bone to pick with somebody?
    Quite a few cheap shots.
Stop trying to degrade everybody do that you look better.
Youl'll need alot more than that to even begin to look decent!

  11. oh stop, nobody was degrading anybody here. I was just pointing out the fact that people seem to have time and money for these trips, that's all. The Yonah Landau line was well-deserved, nothing too critical, just a noteworthy fact.

    Chill out, dudes.

  12. No matter how small the ohel, the residents themselves never complain.

  13. Hirshel:

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment on my website www.kevarim.com. First off, are you the Hirshel Tzig from Monsey?

I visited your blog Circus Tent and read your positing on the Buffalo Rebbe. I would like to make two points:

    1. His name was Eliyahu Yosef (not Gedaliah Aron)
    2. He was the first Admor to be buried in the United States. The first Admor (that I have found thus far) to step foot on these shores, was the Yampole Rebbe who along with his son, the future Brownsviller Rebbe visit New York in 1890. I am told that there is a picture of the Rebbe and Chief Rabbi Yaakov Joseph at a rally to promote kashrus (I never saw it).

    Thank you,

  14. "1760 Fifty Third Street

    Lower Suite"

I didn't know there were any "suites" at that location.

    Some fancy establishment, that!?

  15. R' Yosef Rabinovich of Buffalo was not ben acher ben from the Besh't. He was ben acher ben from the Teshous Chen, a Talmud of the Besh't. He was married to a sister of R' Mordichai Dov of Hornostaipol, a great grandson of the Mittler Rebbe (which would make his Rebitzen also a great grand daughter of the Mittler).

He was a businessman in Russia but a great Talmud Chacham who ran away from rabbonis. Towards the end of his life, the Jewish community of Buffalo contacted him and invited him to come as their Rav. He accepted, came, and died a few years later. None of his children came with him.

He was an Uncle of the Monistricer Rebbe of Brownsville (who came to America in 1919 after a progrom that killed his son), a great Talmud Chachem in his own right and a Mechaber of many Seforim.
