A poem.
LOC
(sent in by a reader)
with a lifeless stare
and a soft glare
no one comes near
a drag and a puff
a bag filled with snuff
snag's had enough
clear as can Be
future ain't gonna Be
what is was supposed to Be
oh ragged and forlorn
reckel ripped and torn
own life does he mourn
got nothing to boast
sips a lonely toast
for life like burned toast
can no longer learn
can't even earn
for the past does he yearn
he accepts his fate
no longer does he wait
for a shtelleh he'll hate
downs the whole glass
trash it in trash
for the roof does he dash
I was a bit afraid about the last line, but my fears were unfounded. B"H.
ReplyDeleteWhen will those yarmulkes come back into style?
ReplyDeleteUG. I hate poetry.
ReplyDelete???
ReplyDeleteHow do you know he was a snag? Some Chassidim wore those hats/outfits too.
Drag and a puff? Sounds like a Chossid or Rebbe praving ketayres.

ReplyDeletethe poem was sent in by a reader, and I added the photo. The pic is for illustration purposes only.
The poem doesn't talk about the man in the pic.
I thought that was self-understood.
Note that his garment seems to button right over left, by the way.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a Chossid with the ketayres and the mashkeh.
ReplyDeleteHow did he become a snag? Shaychus with Halloween? A costume? Chossid dressed like a snag?
also a litvak has returned, better than having sheur back
ReplyDelete"can no longer learn
ReplyDeletecan't even earn
for the past does he yearn"
Sad indeed. Our oilam is Kerach Mikan VeKerach Mikan...
"he accepts his fate
no longer does he wait
for a shtelleh he'll hate"
How many Yungerleit can exsist on In-House Shtellehs? How many Yungerleit who do get those coveted shtellehs actually know how to teach. Or care.
LieWhatever
Can anyone tell me definitively what kind of yarmulke the Rebbe Rashab ZTL wore. Obviously his brother the Razah ZTL wore the same yarmulke pictured here. Maybe someone out there talked to one of the alte chassidim.
ReplyDeleteif he accepted his fate he wouldn't be dashing for the roof. His dash to the roof is built on unfounded
ReplyDeleteתרעומות כלפי מעלה
also "got nothing to boast" Why not? All those years in Kollel, all the blatt Gemara, all the shittos HoRishonim v'Akroinim, all the lomdisha Sevoros... If these are not boast-worthy, i.e. of enduring and eternal value in a mans life..what is?

ReplyDeletemaybe all that learning was for a means, which isn't happening in his case, which may make him look at all that time spent as wasted. r'l.
Maybe the system needs to change...
or maybe the attitude just need an adjustment.
ReplyDeleteIf full time long term learning has become synonymous with תורה לשמה then yungeleit have to stop dreaming about, and validating themselves exclusively through, the "pot of gold" shtelleh that awaits them and the end of the Kollel rainbow.
I am a young dead couple in Mumbai. I am the tears of millions. I am the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
ReplyDeleteI am generations restored to G-d. I am the Jewish world redefined. I am the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
I am a Chosid. I am a Rav. I am a Misnagid. I am a Rosh Yeshivah. I am frum. I am not yet frum. I am a Jew. I am the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
I am whatever a Jew needs, wherever a Jew is. I am Ahavas Yisroel, I am Klal Yisroel. I am the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
I am part of you. I am the Lubavitcher Rebbe. And so are you.

ReplyDeleteI thought this niggun is an appropriate counterpoint to the story
