How Rav Elyashiv - grandson of the Leshem - האט געפראוועט Lag BaOmer

Read the left sidebar, please.

Needless to say he wasn't a big fan of it, even if his zeide, the Baal HaLeshem, was a big mekubal. But then again, he wasn't a big fan of much anything, other than the גמרא.

  3. it proves his honesty. True litvishe are repulsed by the kevorim business i.e. kupat ha'ir.
in lita people went to kivrei avos on a yartzeit and maybe erev rosh hashana. going to a tzaddik's kever was mufrach l'gamri.

  4. I was present at R. Elyashaiv's home מוצש"ק which fell out on Lag Baomer, about 8 years ago. After Havdallah, Reb Aryeh (his gabbai/grandson) performed a spirited rendition of Bar Yochai while R. Elyashiv, head on forehead looking down at his table, grimly tolerated the spectacle till it's conclusion at which time all present hastily bid him ah gut voch before being whisked out by the aforementioned Gabbai.

I read in a few places that Rav Elyashev, had a certain weakness to Negina.

    " going to a tzaddik's kever was mufrach l'gamri."
There is a Livak and there are Talmidai hagra,
The Ltvak was cold to kevorim and to many other things, but the Talmidai hagra were very spiritual people as the Leshem, Reb eizek Chover, reb Sruel shklover. Its a lot of schools and dont brush them all with 1 big brush

  7. From the Magid Mashorim of the Bies Yossef you see that the Bies Yosef (the father of the Shulcha Orech, that Rav Elyashev was studying), was traveling many times to Miron, and he still did not say that Rashbi is in the Gemora.Maybe it was close to Tzefas.

  8. Reb Hershel,

Did you see the video of the Rebbe in Belz? Did he really step on his forefathers kever just to invite him to the wedding and ask for 'ah yi'shee'ah fahr Klal Yisroel.
Is that minhag Belz to step onto k'vorim?

thank u for explaining this. i always wondered the relationship of the perushim in yerushalayim (talmidei hagra) to the litvaks. i know some rav kookniks who follow perushim minhagim, and now it makes sense how it comes together.

  10. You are poshut mekaneh in Maran ztvk"l. He was a bigger mekushar than you. Mekushar to HKB"H and his gemara!

  12. Tzig, you are in error. He was a fan of doing the will of hashe, as expressed in halachah. He learned every available moment of his life because that is what one is required to do according to halachah. If halachah required the closing of his beloved gemorrah he did out with a moment of thought. For example, he felt that one should be concerned about the singular opinion of the Rambam (as understood by the Aruch Lenair)that one fulfills a mitvah daraissa by shaking the arba minim in the old City, so he closed his gemorra, and "wasted" several hours going to the Kosel. Another example: in Telz yeshiva on Channukah the bochurim appoint a shaliach to light for them since if they would all go to their rooms to light it would generate great "bitul Torah." When questioned about this, Rav Elyashiv replied that bochurim should light themselves since this is what halachah requires to do right now and thus bittul Torah is not a consideration. If Rav Elyashiv did not celebrate Lag B'omer it is because after seeing all the available info he felt that it is the will of Hashem that he sit and learn gemorra and not celebrate.

Tzig is in no error, he agrees with you 100% that Rav Elieshev, sees no significance in that day, and opposed all other gedolim as his ziede the Leshem who had a different shita.I would like to know what are his views on his grandfather the Leshems Torah, or on the Gra's words in Mishli about the chiuv of learning Kabala.

for the record, Reb Chaim ben Eter, and the Chida were Anshei Halacha and they are very pro Lag beomer and its celebrations... But Rav Elieshev can differ with them, but its important to emphasize that Klal Yisroel are following a mesorah of anshei halcha

  15. the reason only one person lights chanuka candles in telshe is not because of bitul Torah.

  16. I Learnt in Telz it was my understanding at the time that the Reason why only one person lit Chanukah Candels for everyone in the Main Bais Medrash is Because Telshe Has Very strong Hakpodos When it comes to fire ever since 2 Bochurin Lost their Lives in a Telshe Yeshiva Dormitory Fire. I Happen to Know of Bochurim suspended and expelled From the Yeshiva For Playing with Fire on the Telshe Yeshiva Campus. The Yeshiva Takes These Matters Very Seriously.

  18. A grayse yaser keyach for the gevaldiger gilyon from Eretz Hakaydesh!

Why are Lubavitchers going off the derech now and lighting bonfires in Kan Tzivah and elsewhere when that was not the minhog of the nesi'im. Show me one of the Nesi'im, from the Alter Rebbe until the Seventh Rebbe, who lit a bonfire, in their hayf, on Lag Bo'aymer. And to do it in Kan Tzivah, paltin shel Hanesi'im noch aych?? הגם לכבוש את המלכה עמי בבית???

  19. fear not, Snag. from what I see the bonfires have very little shaychus to Lag BaOmer. They just stand around and roast hot dogs, they poshut don't know what to do with the fire. The only ones that do are Horowitz and Twerski, 2 Yerushalmis, who miss their childhood fires.

The Nesi"im still dont do it, but I believe that the Chasidim who live in Eretz Hakodesh did the bonfires, and that minhag was just transferred to the chasidim in Kan Tziveh

"What did the Rebbe do on Lag? No Bonfire?? Bar Yochai??"
He Farbrenged with Chasidim on the day and on a shabos earlier ,and repeated 1000 times that it is a special day yom simcha as the famous Magen Avraham, and said mamorim on the concept of rashbi, based on the AR sidur and Mamorai Admor hazokan. Did the parade on certain Sudays, but I don't think he said bar yochai, since not his Father and Fil or the Chasidim of Nevel had that minhag.
