The Chabad Rov you never heard of who was a friend of Rav Kook and who was משיג on the לשם

Rav Pinchos haKohen Lintop of Birzh, Lithuania

This was a time where Rabbonim were, I guess, independent when it came to דעות, even if the Rebbe was of another opinion. Hebrewbooks tells us that Reb Pinchos was Rov in Vaboylnik.... at a time as well. How ironic!

  4. Reb Tzig n"y,

Dude, why don't give mega props to hamechaber hachoker hametargem hanaaleh, R. Betzalel Naor, for recently translating & publishing R. P. Lintop's extensive letter to Rav Kook, under the title "Kanauteh d'Pinchas"? See: http://orot.com/the-zeal-of-pinchas/pinchas"?

  8. The Leshem is fighting for the purity of the Gra's view on Tzimtzum, he dislikes that the Nefesh Hachaim did not follow his own Rebbes view. There were a circle of Misnagdic Mekubolim that were out to fix it, but the world as a whole is following the Nefesh Hachaim's view which is the Derech Habesht. The last person who was trying to renew this old discussion and took that side, was the Leader of the Zilbermanim

  11. Regarding the shita of the Leshem l'gabbei tzimtzum I wouldn't be so quick to claim he held tzimtzum ki'pshuta the way some authorities on mesoras haGra want to explain. The Leshem does write in biurim that the halacha is like the yosher levav and tzimtzum was kipshuto but that we can't have a hasagah of what kipshuto means. His shita was much more of an attempt to distance the lomdei ramchal and what they called "nimshal" as opposed to what some claim to be the rallying call for true authentic shita of the gra. B'emes tzimtzum in kitvei haleshem is a new understanding based on the writings of rabenu azriel zya rebbe of ramban as the leshem writes b'peirush in michtavim to hamekubal rav naftali hertz, and its as "lo kipshuto" in a sense as talmidei habesht. And l'gabbei beis medrash d'zilberman, writings have come out that show he was modeh to the fact that tzimtzum is lo kipshuto

  12. Thank you so much for posting this. I am a einekel of Rav Pinchus Lintup through my mothers side . In the link below is a lot of information on the Rav as part of a memoir written by Menachem Mendel Freiden who learned B'chavrusa with Rav Lintup and later became a Zionist . http://books.google.com/books?id=z_erm9evO6EC&pg=PA181&lpg=PA181&dq=raabi+pinchas+lintup&source=bl&ots=W0KnnRbnEf&sig=OihXQjqLE54QCYX-vr4cZebpKhw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=-1amUdLcFvew4AOu3YH4Dw&ved=0CDAQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=raabi%20pinchas%20lintup&f=false

  13. Here is his sefer titled 'Yalkut Avnei Emunas Yisrael' where he devotes many pages on his dream to bridge shalom between the followers of the Vilna Gaon and the Baal Hatanya. http://www.hebrewbooks.org/32619

  14. My great great grandfather Rabbi Pinchus Hacohen Lintup (1852 - 1924) served as rav in Vabolnik , Lithuania and afterwards in Birzai , Lithuania . Rabbi Lintup overlapped Rabbi Solomon E Jaffe in the rabbinate of Vabolnik, Lithuania circa 1888 and maintained cordial relations even after Rabbi Jaffe relocated to the United States. Apparently Rabbi Solomon E. Jaffe served as Chief Rabbi of New York for a short while after the demise of Rav Yaakov Yosef, and to the short-lived Rabbinical Seminary (Yeshivah la-Rabbanim) that Rabbi Jaffe headed in New York (1909-1910) during the temporary closure of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), today the rabbinical seminary of Yeshiva University. Rabbi Lintup was considered to be from the three greatest mekubalim in Lithuania of his time , the other two being Rav Kook and Rav Shlomo Elyashiv, the baal haleshem. More on Rabbi Lintup can be read here: http://orot.com/the-zeal-of-pinchas/

  17. Reuvain Dessler devotes a chapter in his latest work, Shenos Dor V'dor volume 4 , of correspondence between my grandfather and Rav Kook . http://www.artscroll.com/Products/SHNOS4.html

  18. From reading those pages in the book that was linked, he didn't seem like much a lubavitcher at all, just an open minded litvishe rov.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wonder if he was Lubavitch or from Kopust, the latter would be more likely
Also, does anyone know where he learned? Volozhin or by a rov, he was to old to have studied in tomchei temimim

  20. Yossi
can you plz scan the letters from the Dessler collection, and send it to Hirshel
    Shmuly
He was no Chbadnik, just was in to some ideas of the Rav...

  21. Tzigel, you know whats ironic? Looking at this rov's seforim I see haskamos from the Aderes, and the Nitziv, but no haskamos from Chabad/Kapust et al. You complain about matzav.com de-chabading Reb Hillel, one post after you (in true mormon style) baptize this rov to be a chabadnick.

    ReplyDelete
  22. what's ironic - idiotic, rather, Shua, is your "proof" that he wasn't a Chabadnik.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Shua
Its the publisher Naour that claims that he was a chasidic Rav.
you got a hangover on the Tzig...he just quoted the publisher you are a lunatic that can not read and comprehend

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mechel
    why is Shia a lunatic?
He did not say he had. no chasidic leanings. he just said that it. seems he was not a chabadnik. at least not in the classic sense

    shlomo

  25. he's a lunatic for basically accusing me of making it up and "Baptizing" him posthumously a la the Mormons

    ReplyDelete
  26. Did the publisher write that he was a Chabad Rav? or Hirshel concocted it? if Shua does not know then let him read.
Shua's analogy to Mormonism was sheer ignorance and blind hate

  27. It's a shame you can't differentiate between a hired rov of the Chasidik (Chabad) community in Briz, and a Chabad chosid. He was a chabtzker, like Rav Kook was a Chabadtzker.

Wrap your mind around these two ideas.
    1) Chabad had no problem taking a rov who wasn't a chabnik, especially when they needed to maintain cordial community relations with the litvishe majority. (unlike these days וד"ל)

    2) Not everyone who crossed paths with Chabad was a chosid. To put it in modern terms, just because you once got a dollar from the Rebbe doesn't make you a chosid.

Read his seforim it's clearly not chabad torah, (as an aside, Chabad unfortunately squirms from the Ramchals torah.)

  28. I have in my possession a book written by the Ponevezher Rav Zt''l titled 'yahadus Lita' . In the book the PR writes a lot about great rabbanim from Lithuania who he knew personally . A biography on Rav Pinchus is written there as well where he writes straight out that he was from a family of Chabad chassidim. So Hershel does have some basis to his claims.

Did Hirshel say he is a chabadnik? or Chabad Ruv?
What are you barking about? so bug off from Hirshel
But what you say on a person that is promoting shitas chabad, and writes harsh words against gedolim that dare to differ with the Alte Rebbe? Would you call him a Biusher? Krechnifer?Arush? or ??????

"Wrap your mind around these two ideas."
Wrap your warped mind around the following, Chabad is not too enthusiastic to own Rav Lintoff, so burg off that subject

"Read his seforim it's clearly not chabad torah, (as an aside, Chabad unfortunately squirms from the Ramchals torah.)"
So your warped mind have a new issue, the AR was a full fledge plagiarizer,so not Hirshel is the problem, its much deeper

  33. Mechel,
You in your various incarnations are making it difficult to visit the blog.

Can someone actually come up with real details of Rav Lintops bio?
    Where did he learn?
What connection did he have to Chabad?
    Where are his descendants?
We had a grandson here maybe he could fill us up on the details.

Without knowing much, I"m just going to guess that he was from a Chabad lineage but studied in Litvishe yeshivos. Was not unusual at the time. The Rogatchover for example, was from a Chabad lineage but his teachers for the short time he had any were not Chasidim (so i believe)There was no Chabad yeshiva yet, and I don't know if there were any Chasidishe yeshivas in Lita at the time.So either one learned alone in the local beis medresh, like some gedoley yisroel or you went to a yeshiva.
I"m sure someone will come up with the information

  35. Having just noticed this site and the comment regarding Pinchus Lintup, I'm responding. I noticed "Anonymous" responses and was pleasantly surprised at the related lineage. Pinchus Lintup is my great grandfather. My father's mother was Devorah Linfield. I would like to hear back from you if you have additional knowledge of our family ancestry.
