בשנת תרצ"ב הדבר"י היה בא"י ורבו עליו אנשי העדה שתתקבל הרבנות דשם, שהי' אז אחרי ההסתלקות דר' יוסף חיים זאנענפעלד ז"ל, אולם הוא סירב לקבלו וכתוב להם מכתב ארוך הנדפס, אם אמתלאות שונות שאינו יכול לקבלו אז, אבל בשנת תשי"ג בהסתלקות של ר' זעליג ראובן בענגיס ז"ל קודם סתימות הגולל הכריז יחי אדונינו רבינו! על רבם החדש הדבר"י ז"ל, שהי' להם מכתב ממנו (הנדפס במכתבי דבר"י) שהוא היסכם לזה עוד קודם הסתלקותו ! שהפחד הי' דבאם התאחר הדבר אז האגודאים יכריז על אחד מהם והוא ז"ל הוקדם אותם שידע שהם לא מסוגלים להתחצף כ"כ לבוא אחרי המלך בלבושם אם רבניהם, ובזה הציל העדה מבאר שחת דהאגודה

עוד אגלה לך שהוא ז"ל התנה עם העדה שלא תבוא לשם רק פעם בארבע שנים, והם הסכים ע"ז, מ"מ התחרתם ע"ז כי רצה הם (והם העדה אמרו שזה הי' בדעתם מבתחלה) שהוא יבוא לשם להשתקע! וזה הי' חלק.. מהטעם שעשו לו כל הכבוד הגדול כל פעם שהלך שמה לבקרם, שהם רצו לרמזו שישנם שמה קהל גדול ורוב הסרים למשמעתו, אולם דעת קדשו הי' באחרת, ואכמ"ל בזה
