1 for me & 1 for you

HaRav Nachman Yosef Twerski is what you might refer to as TCHBRR, (the could have been Rachmistrivka Rebbe). As a Bochur in the '70's he left his father's home and traveled to New York to learn in Tomchei Tmimim. His father, Reb Yisroel Mordechai, and his grandfather Reb Yochen'tshe of Rachmistrivka were not very happy when they heard the news.

Letters were sent to the Rebbe to "dissuade" NY and send him back home. After all, it's one thing to leave your father's home if he's a Rebbe and join another, it's another thing to become a Lubavitcher. The Rebbe basically told them that the boy must learn במקום שלבו חפץ, and he won't be the one to get him to leave. They were not happy, to say the least.

In a strange way you might say that the Alter Rebbe took one back. As we know the Ovrutsher (בן הצ"צ) became an eidem in Tcherkas and starting to conduct his Chassidus כמנהג טשערנאנל, all his descendants followed in his footsteps. We like to say that the Rebbe בלייבט נישט קיין בעל חוב, so may he collected this Chov coming to him? He recently visited Kivrei Tzaddikim in the Ukraine, and here some pics compliments of COL, and Chabadnik,

  1. If I remember correctly there was a letter to the Lubavitcher Rebbe with two points:
    1. A request that the Rebbe send him away - and back to Chernobyl where he belongs.
    2. The point that his departure pains them very much.

    And the Rebbe's response:
    1. It's not his job to "push away" - so he cannot do that.
    2. That it causes them pain... Azkar al hatzion.

The Rebbe did tell him then, not to change his levush due to the concept of maylin bakodesh (the basis for not taking off the streimel, etc., among Lubavitchers from other chadssidishe kreizin).

  9. SZT felt that his zayda the Rachmistrivka Rebbe was holding out that his son would "return"naming him SZ was on Nachman Yosef"s part a definitive "i'm not leaving chabad" at least that is how i understand what he told me.
