perhaps you can list the 'time demarcationss' for example 13 minutes 10 seconds to 14 minutes, wherever you think wein is out of line..

Wein is an old-time Litvak, the son of a Litvak, the son-in-law of a Litvak (Rabbi Eliezer Levin of Detroit), and all that time amongst the MO's hasn't made him lose his "touch". That's the first I've heard of a "justification" for ratting to the Czar and other authorities.

i've listened to the yeshiva collection many times and that the 'snags were impossible is no chidush.but europe sinas chinum is old

he is a grand nephew of Rav Tzodok(he has been giving weekly shuir in pri tzadik for years)a great admirer of kutzk,chabad,satmer,koznitz,ger,pischischa,pinetza,to name a few.
1) He fails to mention that among the reasons for separate shuls & kehilla were the "hacois & rtzichas" that went on by the hand of misnagdim towards chassidim.

the biggest chutzpah & greatest lie of all is "chasidisim was a root cause for the haskalah movemnt". I'm sure urnitzer can address that. But I think it's clear that haskalah originated in an entirely different area & social class for an entirely different reason. I would say the emancipation in france had more to do with it as well as the changing times (technelogical advances).
ReplyDeleteAccording to Jacob Mark the Haskalah Botei Midrash L'Rabbonim attracted the lower classes who saw it as a chance to get a free solid secular education as well as a Religious one. Which classes did Chassidus attract?
ReplyDeleteVery informative tape, especially for myself, who don't know much about history. I went to his website, and he has built up quite an industry around himself.Good for him.

The published history articles by Rabbi Schachter from YU have a lot more detailed quotes and footnotes, and you can tell that the man is a scholar. Rabbi Wein, on the other hand, throws around his opinion as historical fact, but his shiurim are lightweight, with few mekoros.
I realize that this is what his target audience is comfortable with, but, unless I know more about the man, I would be very leary of getting my knowledge of history through him.
The scorn in his voice when he related the story that "Zushe knows the din from the same place as the yerushalmi knew the din" is unmistakeable (unless you have a bad soundcard).
What Wein does is typical of all historians. A little facts and a lot of hogwash, with some personal opinions on the side.

ReplyDeleteI never heard of such a case of "ein boro k'tocho", until now; he hides his great lamdonus very well on his tapes.
Besides, the issue isn't the person (I don't know him, while you do, so I'll take your word that he's a lamdan).
The issue is: am I listening to an entertaining talk-show host when I listen to his tape, or am I listening to a shiur?.
I don't think I was yoitze the mitzva of talmud torah by listening to his "torah" tape.
We're not discussing his credentials as Talmud Chochom, the ones as historian are what we should be talking about.

every redactor of history has his view point that permeates the reality. Rabbi wein goes further and extrapolates an appologetic for the misnagdim....letters to the russian government every ocne in a while in different cities...oy how innocent the misnagdim .....I really don't get his rational on chasidim opening the birthing canal for all isms thereafter......He may be a misnaged of sorts but he can't skew the chassidim too much because the audience no matter whom will identify with the chasidim at some level...and i believe wein exudes some level of envy... I still like to hear him and would look forward to farbrengan with him in shul....

I would say that Wein probably made a mistake as far as who said it. It may have been another Rebbe who wrote the letter.
ReplyDeleteWe can't believe a Litvak on this inyan because he is biased, huh? But of course we can believe the Lubavitch/Chassidic accounts. They are not at all biased. Of course not.....
