The following three pages are his speech transcribed as it was said - in Yiddish. The Rebbe Rayatz was - you might say - an even bigger "fan" of the "Rav" than even the Rebbe was, and he pushed hard for RYDS to succeed his father Reb Moshe ben הגר"ח in RIETS.

At the dinner for the Central Lubavitcher Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim in New York, 5702/1942: (l-r:) Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, Rabbi Shmaryahu Gurary The Rebbe Rayatz, נ"ע, The Rebbe זי"ע. "And he pushed hard for RYDS to succeed his father Reb Moshe ben הגר"ח in RIETS."
ReplyDeletePardon the question: Who exactly was he "pushing".I"m not familiar enough, but who on the board of Yeshiva or the hanhala would have been swayed, were there any Lubavitchers there?
pushing the presidium, hanholoh, whatever you wanna call it. I do not think there were many Lubavitchers in RIETS at the time, but the Rebbe was a very respected figure. Is that hard to believe?
ReplyDeleteMerkin was on the board. See Merkin plaque in 770
ReplyDeleteRabbi Yisroel Gordon says that the Rav grabbed the FR hand and held it up during his speech when he proclaimed him the R Chanina Bem Dosa of his generation
ReplyDelete770Bo
ReplyDeletethanks for that tidbit! The transcript says only that he "pointed to the hand of the Rebbe"
"but the Rebbe was a very respected figure. Is that hard to believe?"
ReplyDeleteNot hard to believe, just don't know if, his opinion carried weight in YU,and don't know what you are basing yourself on when you say he pushed for R'Solovochiks to be chosen.Bichlal, why would R'JB need a major push?Unlike his father, he was college educated with a PHD and spoke English, while at the same time being a world class talmid chochom and his fathers and grandfathers son!Who in the world would be better suited for what Yeshiva University was looking for at tthe time?
In short, I think A)There is no basis in truth for him being "pushed" B)Even if true, don't think that the Rebbes pushing would have helped any.
If you provide any objective source for this assertion, I "d be happy to see it.

ReplyDeleteI love this Elchanan guy. Doesn't care to look after the history, but writes. Who doesn't know that he did need to be pushed?! And Lubavitch was there to help him. Like it or don't, doesn't make a difference.
ReplyDeleteThere was a backlash against RYBS, you can look it up.
ReplyDeleteelchanan:
ReplyDeleteI read (I am pretty sure in Rabbi Rakeffet's book about Rav Bernard Revel) that there was quite a bit of opposition among the students at YU to appointing Reb Yoshe Ber, and the Rayyatz was among those who publicized letters supporting him.
Didn't RYBS write the article on shor shenagach es haparah against the Rayatz?
ReplyDeleteTzig, are you losing it? How could you label this Soloveitchik branch after Beis Brisk? Rabbi J.B. and his maskilishe underpinnings pushed the envelope too far, including being mattir pants for women which his own wife put into practice.
ReplyDeleteThurston
ReplyDeleteso by that he loses the name and the lineage?
There are letters in the Rayatz Igros about appointing him to YU. Look at the history. They in Rakeffets books and on the internet. There were elements that tried to push him out. Its all documented. Later he thanked the Rayats for supporting him.
ReplyDeleteThat's right Tzig. He loses any right to be meyachess his krumma hashkofos after Bais Brisk. Zet men the poel yotzei fun dem. Have you ever heard of Asher Lopatin in Chicago who pashtus is the most radical leftist still in the OU who didn't leave for the Avi Weiss machaneh? Lopatin allows in his synagogue and Hebrew school the kids that Rahm Emmanuel had with a shiksa who was never megayer. He was also mattir Emmanuel, after getting the kibud of pesicha, to make a phone call on Rosh Hashana about economic policy. Lopatin drayed a kop that Obama's economic policies have a din "pikuach nefesh" and he as a "Brisker talmid" from YU is "machmir" on pikuach nefesh. Lopatin agav has been confronted publicly about Emmanuel's shiksa. He said it's "none of his business".
ReplyDeleteThis is a parody, right? Brisk is so antithetical to chochmos chitzoyinus that R' Elya Svei was rejected to learn by them because he had attended college for 6 months before dropping out by his own volition to learn. Yet you identify the paradigm of the chitzoniyos & filosofia mit Brisk?
ReplyDeletehttp://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Poe's_Law
Is your Brisker parody an example of Nathan Poe's Law?
I still don't get it, Thurston.
ReplyDeleteHirshel needs to listen to the tape titled "Gifter slaughters Lamm for Passover". Rav Gifter blasted YU for accepting open gays so as not to forfeit NYC funding.
ReplyDeleteRJBS was alive for many years during which time YU started advocating toayveh.
What was the reaction from the Rebbe of Lubavitch in the early 1980s when this started?
YU also had an internal dating system dating to back then that does not separate the shiksos in Stern College from meeting Yiddishe bucherim.
There was also treif food being served for many years in the YU cafeteria until responsibility was farmed out to the OU.
"The silver era" by rakefet reports that the agudas harabonim created great pressure for jb to succeed his father. It was not so simple.
ReplyDeleteEverybody jumping on me:
ReplyDeleteI raised questions and asked for information.Instead of jumping, kindly give me a link backing up what you are saying
Thank you
Hershel Schlechter at first appeared more frum and more yeshivish than RJBS but check out the halacha teshuvos written against him and his "ORA" baby on how the YU inspired gitten me'oossen are being marbei mamzerim in klal Yisroel.
ReplyDeleteIn the book of jb's hallucinations called "thinking out loud" it says he once discussed in shiur about the issur of giluy erva of womens hair and was asked about his wife. He blushed and said he was discussing halacha and moved on. -not exact quotes
ReplyDeletea "trop'kele" respect here would go along way
ReplyDeleteNot that you have any, but where would it go?
ReplyDeleteI beg to differ, Revel. I have lots of it, and it would go along way towards you making your point. Otherwise you just look like a hater.
ReplyDeleteRJBS talmid Michael Broyde was attacked by gedolim for advocating women don't have to cover their ervah. The wives of RJBS & Broyde do not cover their hair.
ReplyDeleteGil Student publishes the dayos kozvos of Michael Broyde.
I was being respectful, jb held, on that day at least, that women must cover their hair...
ReplyDeleteElchanan
ReplyDelete"In short, I think A)There is no basis in truth for him being "pushed" B)Even if true, don't think that the Rebbes pushing would have helped any"
there are long letters in Igererth Kodesh of the Rayatz to push the machers of Yu to take Reb Yoshe Ber Soloviechig, you are a arrogant ignorant ferd... you have no idea there are letters and you have the gall to throw facts... this is the bnie torah movement... a bunch of Am aratzim in torah and history...
Rybs wanted xrafting of women in the israelly army
ReplyDeleteHe wanted an investigation of the sabrA-shatlla massire in levonon just like professer leibovitz
A rosh yeshiva who was a talmid of Rav Schneider in Frankfurt and later of Rav Dessler said that the "Rav" from YU cannot be considered a gadol baTorah because even if he found some kind of technical heter for things that push the envelope, he caused a churban in Torah umitzvos to build on it.
ReplyDeleteLets stop this childish disrespect for R'Yoshe Ber,
ReplyDeleteHe had zero to do with the "gay club"
which is not part of RIETS, anyway.
He was a believer in a version of Tora Umadda but was very much a Brisker to
B
R'Broydes article was not advocating women not covering their hair, rather showing according to him at least, that there is some mokom for it, but, anyway, not covering hair was widespread in Lita, and not much could be done about it.R'JB's big talmidims rebbitzens cover their hair.
I still need backup that R'Soloveichik needed a "push"
Thurston Howell
ReplyDelete"Tzig, are you losing it? How could you label this Soloveitchik branch after Beis Brisk? "
It depends what Brisk represents in your eyes... if it is the Meshugass of the Kasketen, wide peyoth, talking rechiloth for hours daily, then you are correct, That The Bostoner goan is no Brisker, in matter of fact he was stopped by his father Reb Moshe as a youngster not to imitate his Uncles Meshugass...
But if Brisk represent the ultimate Lomdus then he was the prince of Brisk, he shows much bigger gadlus then his uncle the Gri"z, he took Brisk out of Kodshim only in to Baba Kama till hilchat Sefer torah...
All the Rechiluth you can leave at AJ desk for fodder for his Chumash shiurim..
That's cool! Dr. Lamm left Torah Vodaas where R' Yaakov Kaminetzky said drafting women is yehurag vlo yaavor to join YU where it's in vogue
ReplyDeleteWas the Rebbe in the Sorbonne together with Rabbi JB? Or am I confusing Berlin?

what make a maskil a maskil? going to college, Is Rav Hutner a Maskil too? reading secular books is Reb Aron Kotler a Maskil too?
"elchanan look it up yourself people gave you leads"
ReplyDeleteThanks for the "useful" info.Not.
Hirshel, made a statement that I want backed up.Especially in light of Lubavitch taking liberties with history.
Failed Miscreant has been shreying for years that there is no evidence the Rebbe was ever enrolled in Sorbonne
ReplyDeleteCut it out trying to separate RIETS from YU. They are joined at the hip.
ReplyDeleteAnd RIETS itself refuses to revoke the semicha of shtick toiayva Steve Greenberg because the scaredy cats are afraid of a lawsuit. We know your other lame defenses like what is precedent to revoke semicha. Telz and others have done it when need be
Elchonon,
ReplyDeleteYou were directed, if you can read, to 2 of rakefets books were he talks about the difficulties involved in getting jb to get his fathers shiur.
The board of YU wanted someone even worse and the agudas harabonim, then. Marginally still affiliated with the mizrachi forced the issue.
Got him the shiur but not to be the head of the institution...
Thurston
ReplyDelete"Brisk is so antithetical to chochmos chitzoyinus that R' Elya Svei was rejected to learn by them because he had attended college for 6 months before"
your facts are wrong he was not rejected in Brisk...
Its ironic that he was rejected by RAK ( who also read Pushkin in his younger years) till Wiesberg his buddy beggged for him by RAK to admit him and he got in there to become the Biggest Kanoi in the USA
R' Elya Svei absolutely was rejected by Brisk. Even his talmidim reluctantly admit it
ReplyDeleteR' Elya was not the biggest kanoyee, just the biggest who had any kind of influence. The biggest kanoyee was the Kashau Ruv.
ReplyDeleteAny hidden messages in Tzig's choice of "Prince"? In King James Bible speak it's every spy a Prince for the Meraglim.
ReplyDeleteThe line after the one you underlined:
ReplyDeleteאמת, מען דאַרף אויך די אנדערע 12 אני מאמין'ס האַלטען
It sounds like the criticism he was addressing has a familiar ring to us modern readers.

R' Nachum Sauer, a respected poisek in the litvishe circles in LA, & a talmid of RJBS, said that a shiur once someone asked RJBS abt his wife not covering her hair, and his reply was something to the effect of "what should I do, divorce her?"
RJBS was with the Rebbe in sorbonne together with RYH. The Rebbe took classes in sorbonne, but it's not clear if he was registered as a student there.

ReplyDelete"RJBS talmid Michael Broyde was attacked by gedolim for advocating women don't have to cover their ervah."
what is the difference between Broydes pesak and the Orech Hashulchans pesak on hair or the Mishneh Berura on Legs?
Whats all this juvenile name calling?
who are the gedolim that attacked? who said Broyde is not a Godal?
Gil Student's guru Michael Broyde was attacked by R' Shlomo Miller over the hair covering and by the inner circle of Rav Sternbuch for his fraudulent standards in gerus.
ReplyDeleteBrookline, why WOULDN'T R' Elya get rejected by the Rov for attending college? Don't you know how AJ weeds out anyone who went to college? He even basically kicked out guys who were already there when he found out. I know two of them personally. Surely you aren't that clueless about Brisker opposition to secular schooling?
ReplyDeleteWho ever thought brode WAS a gadol??!!
ReplyDeleteLets analyze the poster "Ish Brookline":
ReplyDeleteFirst he says this: "there are long letters in Igererth Kodesh of the Rayatz to push the machers of Yu to take Reb Yoshe Ber Soloviechig, you are a arrogant ignorant ferd... you have no idea there are letters and you have the gall to throw facts... this is the bnie torah movement... a bunch of Am aratzim in torah and history..."
Than he : "Whats all this juvenile name calling?"
Pot calling the kettle black,Ish Brookline????
Lastly look at the inorance this fellow shows: "what is the difference between Broydes pesak and the Orech Hashulchans pesak on hair"
The Oruch Hashulchan has nothing to do with Broydes psak, he only posits that one may daven kneged se'ar.
In short, you are a ignorant name caller and liar, you have nothing to do with the Prince of Brookline, who would never use illogical and gutter language.

So the beard makes a godal....
There is no reason whatsoever to believe that Rav Yoshe Ber was anything but against a married woman not covering her hair.
ReplyDeleteSo we should all be judged by what our spouses (or exes) do and have done? I think not.
RJBS and his brother RAS, both of blessed memory, encouraged their Talmidim to think for themselves. It is true, unfortunately, that some have taken this too far (Weiss, Lopatin, and others).

ReplyDeleteR' Shlomo Miller vs Broyde
I can't believe the am haaratzus from this self-styled paskunyak Brookline. There is a chiluk tzevishen what is ervah for you to make a brocho and what is ervah for the woman alein. This is besides that the Aruch Hashulchan is a daas yochid and even he holds you are not allowed to look at her. Do you even look up anything inavainik before ploppering away?

ReplyDeleteI am sorry its a bizoan hatorah to answer like Rav Miller...Its a pashkevil..The CS wrote a regular teshuva to Aron choriner( quoted in rav millers reply), and Rav Miller can not answer in a toradige way to Rav Brodye...

You do NOT need a gantzeh megilah to answer a bahaymeh like Broyde. When Avi Weiss and the IRF welcomed gays into shuls and their adopted kids into day schools, 100s of rabbonim signed a pashkevil against him.
ReplyDeleteWhen Emanuel Rackman & Yisroel Belsky were mevatel kiddushin, many gedolim wrote against them bekitzur.

I guess in Benai Berak the trend was different so rebetzin Shach covered her hair, I guess the Rav of Boston did not see the trend change so he did not change....
Does anyone have a copy of the article thay Rav Soloveitchik wrote against's the Friedike Rebbe's maamar about shor shenagach?
ReplyDeleteDoes Brookline have anything to refute the facts I stated or is he just going to level personal insults because he's got nothing else?
ReplyDeleteDon't believe what Brookline is quoting from Dr. Schach even if Dr. Schach actually said it. Dr. Schach turned modern orthodox and had an axe to grind.
ReplyDeleteRav Schach was hand picked by R' Isser Zalman Meltzer for his tzaddekis niece because he saw in him the upcoming gadol hador.

Prof Marc Shapiro is no Charedi shill. He writes about the kerfuffle btwn RDC & RDH and actually defends RDC that he was protesting the Rav based on something that could not be properly understood at the time because it wasn't yet fully revealed. There is also a recording online of the incident
ReplyDeleteIsh Brookline should change his name to Ish Buffoon.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way in the world that the modern Schach has more neemonus than the gadol hador of the time R' Isser Zalman & his niece who they work looking for the biggest tzaddik & lamdan for her shidduch. This is not stam a shidduch. She was top pick in frumkeit & ehrlichkeit.
Maran Rav Schach ztl was already recognized as a gadol baTorah in his younger years and he had an appropriate Rebbitzen to go with it. He wrote shtiklach for prestigious kovtzim that only gedolim were invited to write for. The alter Mirrers and other chashuvei Lita would travel by train to Kletzk where he was a maggid shiur under R' Aron Kotler ztl for the zchus of speaking to him in lernen.
Dr. Schach is good for co-ed "Yeshiva" of Flatbush where he taught for many years. (R' Avigdor Miller always refused to call the place a yeshiva). This is the same place where the rosh "yeshiva" named Stadtmauer "came out of the closet" in a mass email to the parent body that he is a mishkav zachurnik (reported in Jewish Week).
But I won't even believe that Dr. Schach would lie to say such a thing about his tzaddekis mother because the dubious source is Ish Buffoon, the supporter of Broyde and everything else krum and twisted out of context.

ReplyDeleteNot as slifkin said that he signed a blank check.
I don't know what is bothering Brookline so much about R' Elya. R' Elya would have been just barely old enough to learn by the Brisker Rov in Europe and why would it so outrageous if he wanted to learn by him after the war in Eretz Yisroel even if it was just a chabura? Rav Schach came to speak to R' Velvel in learning whenever he had the chance.
ReplyDeleteWhat was R' Aron Feldman's final position on Slifkin? I know he was defending Slifkin at least at the beginning which gave even more impetus to the kanoyim to attack Slifkin because they wanted to discredit both R' Aron Feldman and R' Shmuel Kaminetzky.
ReplyDeleteJB didn't even have the decency to wear a hat in the presence of the Rayatz, who cared what he said in his speech, sitting there in just a yarmulka is a sign of ultimate disrespect!
ReplyDeleteMaybe he was wearing a hat on the way there ober tziz geven zayer vindik and it blew off in the path of a fire truck on a call that crushed it beyond recognition. Only a Borsalino goes back into shape after being crushed by a fire truck. It happened to a Yid in Boro Park.
