!דף השבוע - a new weekly feature here on Circus Tent - 1חגיגה ב
Rav Teitz at the radio studio delivering his shiur (Source)
A biography, courtesy of GoogleBooks
Starting this Wednesday, and iy"h every Wednesday for some time, we will feature a recording of the late Rav Mordche Pinchas Teitz's Daf HaShavua that was taught on the late WEVD Yiddish radio, 1050 on your AM dial. The shiurim will start with מסכת חגיגה and will go על הסדר so that you can have a גמרא nearby and follow along. This way we do several things: 1) teach Torah, which is always good. 2) bring you a period in our history that is no more. 3) made a shtikkel zikaron to the late Rav Teitz, who is in many ways forgotten about in the Charedi world. And 4) do our part to keep Yiddish even more alive on the internet. Please enjoy, shteig away, and comment!

ReplyDeleteBTW your point about him being forgotten is missing the main point (it would be like saying the Gurary's are forgotten in Chabad). there was a "war" between the Rosh Hayeshivos and the Rabbonim in the 40's & 50's. The Rosh Hayeshivos won. To the victors go the spoils (and the right to write the history books). that's how it works. it is universal.
ReplyDeleteWhat nostalgia! His voice was an integral part of motzei shabbos in our home. I always wondered who this Mister Basenko is whom he cordially thanked every single week.
ReplyDeleteIn fact I personally learned the entire Masechet Moed Koton by listeng to his program.

WEVD (originally broadcasting at 1220 AM, later on 1300 and finally on 1330, was an American news-talk radio station launched in August 1927 by the Socialist Party of America. Making use of the initials of recently deceased party leader Eugene Victor Debs in its call sign, the station operated from Woodhaven in the New York City borough of Queens. The station was purchased with a $250,000 radio fund raised by the Socialist Party in its largest fundraising effort of he 1920s and was intended as spreading progressive ideas to a mass audience. A number of national trade unions and other institutions aided the Socialists in obtaining the station.
Operation of the station was taken over by the publishing association responsible for producing the Yiddish-language social democratic daily newspaper the Jewish Daily Forward in 1932. An FM station using the same call letters was added during the 1950s. After briefly leaving AM broadcasting in 1979, The Forward swapped its FM frequency for another AM frequency and continued broadcasting as a small ethnic station until divesting itself late in the 1980s.
In a further indicator of the times, and a commentary on Yiddish language in general, WEVD became ESPN sports radio.

You may not be aware, that 1050 ESPN radio has switched to Spanish ESPN radio, in a further indicator of the times...
the Google Books biography doesn't allow me to see the book - "this account doesn't have access"
ReplyDeleteHoly Belz Empire (and I take that in the Batman and Robin sense)
ReplyDeletePhilozophish, if they had sons, would they yarshen the papistveh?
