That's how he looked when he came from Europe. His father was a ukrainisher chasidisher yid from Samordok (plach Skire) and a shtarke Boyaner chusid, but lived almost 20 years in Germany.
i heard it, basically you are promoting his publicizing that a Lubavitcher is capable of retzicha mamush for the sake of the rebbe , the sweet words surrounding his loshen hora does lessen the impact on the listener tov shebenuchisim regotses mocho
Rabbi Rakeffet once again spouts forth with offensive narishkeit, saying 'The Chasidim won' and other mishugas. I guess that is why Hirshel likes him.
Rabbi Rakeffet - just because there is a smaller number of Litvaks like you today (meaning clean shaven, kipah srugah wearing Zionists from America) doesn't mean that the Litvaks have lost, chas vesholem! Boruch Hashem, the Litvishe eylem is going strong. Just that they have progressed and are not tied into an outdated image and model of a Litvak from the Bronx, circa 1950, like you are (those who were that way at one time, have, to a large degree outgrown such narishkeit). Which, by the way, was different from a Litvak in 1850 and a Litvak in 1800, and a Litvak in 1750. FYI, the Vilna Gaon didn't go around clean shaven and with a kippah srugah like you, nor did R. Shmuel Salant, R. Yehoshua Leib Diskin, Rav Schach, Rav Chaim Brisker, Rav Boruch Ber, Rav Shimon Shkop, Rav Aharon Kotler, zecher tzadikkim livrocho, and on and on. Your definition and conception of what a Litvak (misnaged) is, is outdated and incorrect. Es past nit for a historian like you to not update it as time goes on).
I know that Rabbi Rakeffes has communication with this blog, so I am using it to reach out to him and plead, please stop the foolish comments. Besides being factually incorrect, who made you the chief of the Litvaks to raise a white flag and say 'we have lost'? You can say 'YU Litvaks from 1956 have lost' perhaps, but you can not properly speak for the braoder Litvishe eylem at large, who are proud of what they are. Genug shoin! Her shoin op di narishkeit. If you want to convert to Lubavitch, nu, I can't stop you, but you are not the Rosh Gedaylei Lita and should not delude yourself that you are the last of the Litvaks. Perhaps you are one of the last of the old Bronx Litvaks. Dos alles! I am mayche bitaykef to your statements.
I like cuz he's likeable! I don't always agree with him, but I posted this because I liked the fact that he has such fond memories of Reb Leibel B. In his defense he probably sees the Litwaukees having lost by virtue of the fact that they have abandoned most of their traditions and now are just Hasids with Lithuanian havarah.
I saw an ad in one of the BoroPark circulars advertising a bris pillow or s/thing like that that was used by the - wait for it... KANIEVSKY REBBE!!! I kid you not. I even have a photo of it.

Hirshel,
ReplyDeleteYou're on the right track about what Rabbi Rakeffet meant by "the Chasidim won" and I think the ad you mention is support for his contention.
There were some real pearls in this talk. Thank you for posting this.
