סאסובער רבי זצ"ל

Nephew and son-in-law of the Satmar Rov - Reb Yoel. His mother was the Satmar Rov's sister. The original family name was Mayer, not Teitelbaum. He did not have children before his wife bas the Satmar Rov passed away in 5714/1954. He later remarried and had children. I came across this drawing and figured I'd post it - along with some pics for comparison. They made him look kind of like a movie character. He, unfortunately, passed away in his prime in 1966.

Shabbos Schedule for Satu-Mare, January 3-4, 1936

I guess the time for Sof Zman Krias Shma wasn't legible when they printed this sefer. טשולינט ריקען is ten minutes before ליכט צינדן, but you only need to close your store 5 minutes before. Or is that when the bakery closes - the one that stores all the Chulent? It would seem so.  A quick Google search tells me that sunset on January 3 was 4:48pm. So they lit candles 10 minutes before Shkiah. Sunset the next day was 4:49, yet Motzoei Shabbos is only 69 minutes thereafter. No 72 minutes, even in the פלטרין של מלך. 

Maybe we should tell the NYS Supreme Court about that

Say what you want about Reb Aron Teitelbaum, but when he wants to he knows to put people he disagrees with in their respective places. The examples here of that are almost too numerous to mention. You need to watch the whole clip. It's a kosher comedy. Some people are there but WE don't know why. Like, when did Reb Dovid Shustal become the פארזארגער of Klal Yisroel? Some are there and THEY don't know why. Like, Reb Mordche Duvid seems like he just now for the first time heard that there is an Israeli army. But they never expected the smackdown from the Satmar KJ Rebbe, that's for sure!

This is how the sausage is made, we just never get to see it.

This is too good to be true. Well, almost. But apparently it is. They brought in some policeman in a Yeshiva to lie to the masses. He did a number on them. Crocodile tears and all. Crying about 5 bochurim that were either forcefully or cunningly taken to the טמא'נער צה"ל. The problem is he's no Rosh Yeshiva, as they claimed he was. The Yeshiva exists, to some extent, but the bochurim are fictitious. I said my piece about the whole shindig. This just solidifies it.

As an aside I add an email communication I received today while writing this post: Hi again. As per Matzav today the anti medina forces have scheduled an asifa to protest drafting leidek geyers into our esteemed IDF. Rav Aaron of Chaim Berlin and Rav Eli Ber will be there. As someone who has a mesora from his father that when litvaks and Satmar Chasidim make shulem so they can not support Israel it's a bad marriage, as it is built on Sheker. As someone who put up the flag of Israel in my heimish shul in KGH stating an appreciation to Medinat Yisrael for donating $303,000,000 To support Torah, (more than Joe and Faye Tenenbaum) and as someone who is a son of a survivor of 13 camps but felt his zechus of fighting in 1948 in the milchomo hakodosha of liberating our land was his greatest achievement, and as someone who was in front of the Beis Yisroel at 5:00am for tea, and went to Amshinov as well, and was meshamesh Rav Hutner zt"l - I state today that the yeshivish chasidic world has pushed me away, and that is why I am more Chabad today than ever. I want to declare that we must protest these people for going against our medina and I hope you can arrange a demonstration against them that day. Enough is enough. Sorry to take your time venting.

Israel Zupnick's desperate effort to save his wife and children during WW2

Zupnick was a businessman from Czechoslovakia who was here in the US when the war broke out. He was thus stuck here. He had applied for visas for all of them to emigrate in November of '41 but Pearl Harbor (Dec. 7, '41) kept them from being delivered. The folder is full of cables and letters trying to get any help he could. Ultimately he learned that they all perished, hy"D. He remarried but died childless. In between he helped build many of the Satmar Institutions in the US, as well as Charedi Eda Chareidis mosdos in Eretz Yisroel.

First there's this strange interest in French Jewry. They're not authentic-looking like the תימנים, so why care about them? They also don't think much of Satmar. So it's the Kaliver Rebbe that sounded the alarm. He's the one that traveled the world and saw these precious Jews, and he worries that once the make aliya they'll lose some of their will to fight. In the Holy Land we're all Jews, so it doesn't matter how religious we are. They might say. OK. At least the KR has some real concern for them; he doesn't do it out of a vendetta against the Israeli Government. And the Satmar Rebbe is taking the credit because of the Kaliver's illness. OK. SO they travel to Toronto - why davka Toronto? - to raise money for Chinuch Atzmai, so that the French olim that went to either Otzar haTorah or Chabad  or other frum schools in France can continue to do that and not - chas veSholom - go to ממלכתי דתי schools. Dunno what kind of money they raised in Toronto, but it was significant. The entourage consisted of the Satmarer, R Malkiel Kotler and R Dovid Feinstein. A carefully choreographed group. Why RDF? Maybe since R Malkiel is closely identified with the מחבלים faction of Lithuanians in Israel they were afraid that people would think that this was not REALLY an issue. Then they came back to NY and started working on the oylem here. Stories in all Haredi publications, some week after week, including the Ami, which I found kinds surprising, since they're not supposed to be such alarmists. Then they started raising money here.

The Satmorim were perplexed. They've been taught their whole life that Chinuch Atzmai is חינוך לכפירה. The כפירה of ציונות, of course. Which is THE worst kind. And here the Satmar Rebbe who is more closely aligned with the zealot faction is going around raising money for them. OK, he's not flying coach on a commercial airliner, but STILL! Most swallowed it, but some could not. Pashkevillen started to appear decrying the travesty. Demonstrations by a few zealots happened right outside Schron's offices in NYC. And being that Satmar that is a chassidus run by the people, not by the Rebbe, the upper management decided that they needed to act. This was one thing they didn't think through. But what were they to do? They already collected the money. They can't send it back now, that would be foolish and embarrassing. So some genius came up with a plan to use the money for schools in France or something. Maybe 'splain to the Frenchies that Israel is a terrible place where they beat Jews and cut their beards off in the army. That will change their minds and make them stay in jolly ol' France. All this time his brother in KJ is laughing all the way to New Hampshire. They wanted to get him involved but he said no. Even his friend Reb Malkiel couldn't convince him. Let them all go וואו די גרינע פעפפער וואקסט. Said he. Which goes to show you: Satmar and Chinuch Atzmai mix like Gin and Slivovitz.

The Yoka Rov remembers...

Recollections of  The Belzer and Satmar Rebbes ... 

The Yoka Rov recalls with exactitude how in 1952 he told The Satmar Rov not to print the ויואל משה saying: "Do you want to play into the hands of Ben Gurion by curtailing the Aliyah of Shomrei Torah to Eretz Yisroel?" Then again, why should he listen to a young Oberlandishe Rov in his 20's at the time?

There seems to be an issue viewing this clip on Chrome. IE works fine. The shmuess is about the zman Maariv Motzoei Shabbos in the holy cities of Pressburg and Mattersdorf, cities of the Chasam Sofer. It seems like they davened Maariv not at 72 minutes post-Shkiah, but rather at the emergence of 3 stars. Which was 42 minutes after shkiah in the winter and 55 minutes after the shkiah in the summer.

The time in December '45 that "Rabbi J. Teitelbaum of Szatumare" was more Liberal about the Agudah and Israel

Obviously this doesn't refer to the Baal VaYoel Moshe, but, rather, his nephew, Reb Yoel Majer-Teitelbaum of Kiralyhaza. Later in Boro Park. See pic below. It seems like none of the Satmar Rov's sister's children considered themselves zealotrs, not him and not his brother the Sassover. They worked with the Agudah. Although the Satmar Rov was to have said that he too was an Agudist, a REAL Agudist, from before they changed their opinion regarding Zionism and the Jewish State. If my memory serves me right, and if I remember פאליטיק talk from years ago, the Kiralyhaza'er referred to himself as Satmar Rov for a while, until he was convinced otherwise by his dear uncle's people. Meaning they told him that the title was taken. I guess he figured his uncle was in Yerushalkayim in 1945 and was the גאב"ד עדה החרדית, so he was free to use it. The shul on Boro Park's 49th Street is where older Hungarians/Marmuresians gather to pray and reminisce. The old Rov passed away some 30 years ago. Maybe they speak about the fact that they're among the only Yiddish speakers without shtreimlech left in the neighborhood. I see they still use the palm trees on the signage; they still want the עצי תמרים yichus. After all, they are descendants.

He was directly involved in the saga of not returning Yosselle to his parents and even sat in jail for what seems like almost three years, until he was pardoned by the newly elected President Shazar.
