Bubbe Maryasha o"h

(Maryasha Garelick, at right, with her mother and brother, circa 1917. Photo: Wellsprings)

With great sorrow we report the passing of Mrs. Maryasha Garelik-Shagalov, a"h of Crown Heights, wife of Reb Elchanan, הי"ד, who was killed at a young age in Soviet Russia. Mrs. Maryasha lived to the ripe old age of 106. She was dedicated to 'Oholei Torah' for which she collected money devotedly on a voluntary basis. She would stand for hours on Sundays to raise money for this purpose, collecting from the people who stood on line for dollars from the Rebbe. Rebbetzin Maryasha, part of the scene of 770, was survived by a blessed family and several generations of descendents, many of whom serve as shluchim around the globe.

And yet - has it? Look at her children, eineklach etc. Each one represents her in some way. Why do we focus on the Chaval Al D'Avdin, instead of VeHachai Yiten El Libo (yes, another chidush in approach to life by the Rebbe. Snags, eat your heart out and snag yourselves).

Why is her name Garelik (in relation to shagalov etc.)? Is it 2nd marriage? Maiden name? Name on the papers?

HT, are you a descendant of hers? (There are hundreds from what I've heard, so you wouldn't be exposing yourself if you answered.)

Do you see snags hiding behind every door?
What has this post to do with snags?Give it up allready

Garelik was her maiden name. COL

Did people outside her family, who didn't have a bobbe Maryashe of their own, really call her "di bobbe Maryashe"? Or are you a member of her family?

Maiden name. She may have reverted to it in order to get whatever papers she needed to leave the USSR. This was common at one time; no idea how it helped but apparently it did. It may also be that Jewish marriages were not registered by the Soviet authorities YMS (even some of the couples who marry in Marina Roscha or other Chabad shuls today do not bother registering their marriages with the government especially if they plan to go to Israel or the US), so as far as they were concerned her surname was her maiden name.

She was called Bubbe Maryashe by all (or most)

Shagalov was her first husband, Garelik the second.

She was not my Bubbe.

HT - Shagalov was her first husband, Garelik the second.

i'm a direct decendant of Bobbe Mariayashe and you write above that she was married twice. she was not. she got married to R' Yitzchok Elchonon Shagalov A"H and he passed away 70 years ago today - chof hay teves. after he passed away she changed her name back to her maiden name - Garelik.

Thanks direct descendant, I must've been misinformed. After all, Vos Farshteyt an Ungarisher in Gezha Mishpochologye?

Did she ever say why she never remarried? Did she consider herself an Agunah because her husband was not confirmed dead?

Good question. When did she find out what had happened to her husband? I know the exact details were only discovered less than 10 years ago, but there were other means of finding out enough to confirm that he was dead. For instance, Kushe Deitsch HYD's wife was an agunah for 10 years, until a goy was masiach lefi tumei that he was dead; a bes-din was convened to consider the goy's testimony and allow her to remarry. I don't know if they ever did find out exactly when and where he died; I suppose it must be in the NKVD archives, so by now they probably do know. I should ask one of the Deitsch family.

your welcome.

yes she concidered herself to be an agunah since she found out about her husbands death only in 1998 and by then - she was quite old already to remarry

Yitzchok Elchonon Shagalov:Was he named after R'Yitzchok Elchonon of Kovno?
Direct descendant, do you know?
R'Yitzchok Elchonon died in 1896 so it could well be that hewas born shortly after that, bearing in mind that his wife Maryasha was born at the turn of the century.
