לכבוד היא"צ של "הגאון הראי"ש קרליץ שליט"א" - קבלה מישיבת "אחי תמימים" ליובאוויטש ת"א

It's hard to tell who signed this receipt, but I had heard in the past that the great Chossid Reb Shaul Bruk, who was a Rosh Yeshiva and Mashpia there, would go to him for money - and already red in lernen. I've tried to figure out how much that would be in today's money, but to no avail. This was a year or so after the Ponovizher Rov founded his yeshiva and took some of the good bochurim from Achei Tmimim with him, including the R"M Reb Dovid Povarsky. Some of the notable talmidim at that time were none other than the great Reb Yoel Kahan, zol gezunt zein.

Scary looking dudes at the Greineman levayah

The whole Greineman clan has been in the shadows ever since you-know-who made him persona non-grata. He was a young 40-something talmid chochom who defied the establishment and told them to vote for a Charedi mayor in Bnei Beraq, not a מזרחי'ניק. After that he also didn't join the attempted lynching (for lack of a better term) of Rav Moshe Landa. So he was באזייטיגט - as they say in Yiddish, and the only way you heard about him was if you made it your business to get to know him. For those of us in חו"ל you didn't see much of him. You may have known a bit about the politics, but not much more. So I was kinda surprised about the unusual בכיות and what looked like quite sincere pain and crying at the levaya. A lot more than what you usually see. Not the standard R' Shmuel Auerbach funeral grimace, but pain and hurt. So I asked around and found that I wasn't the only one who saw it as such. Apparently the "hiskashrus" that his talmidim had to him was quite strong. Like nothing we ever see in those circles. They outdo chassidim in that sense. So much so that after יציאת נשמה one of the talmidim cried out: העולם נגמר!

Reb Chaim left 12 sons.

More Pics from levaya

A little less scary looking at the בית הקברות but still very impressive.

Thursday Morning Links

a Trip to Kletzk and Volozhin
Maybe we can start sending some bachurim back to Kletzk? Start the freezer there, make them be there for 6 months. There it's REALLY cold, so it would actually be a freezer. Maybe at the same time do some community service, help out old Jews in Belarus. Like on Friday afternoons and such, not cholileh during seder.

The absolutism of מרן החזו"א when it came to other opinions

Photo Courtesy of Yeshiva Eitz Chaim

We bring you a shtikkel from the latest volume of גנזים ושו"ת חזון איש, courtesy of a devoted and kind reader הרוצה בעילום שמו, where a copy of a שער בלאט of a sefer by the late R. Yechiel Michel Tuktchinski (who married a granddaughter of Reb Shmuel Salant) on the issue of the International Dateline (קו התאריך) is shown. The Chaz"I wrote a small but very poignant inscription at the very top of the page, which some say was indicative of his opinion of those who disagreed with him; - such as Reb Chaim Noe - namely, that they were treif. The CI doesn't say exactly in his own script why he wrote that the sefer is "neged Chazal," but Reb Shmerel Greineman quotes him as saying that RYMT writes נגד חז"ל והראשונים and bases his opinions on the Maskil and Apikores Hayyim Zalman Slominski, who wrote a book/sefer on Astronomy and such. I don't know if RYMT admits to him being the source, or if the CI smelled it on his own. Was טוקצינסקי the only one who used astronomy books etc. to pasken regarding complicated matters of astronomy? Why, even the Pupa Rov used a געבילדעטע מענטש to create a luach for him!

What I would like to know is whether or not this applies to all of RYMT's seforim, or at least to all of his zmanim? He would publish the "לוח ארץ ישראל", which is published by his grandson עד היום. That luach is used by most Jews in Eretz Israel who don't follow shitas Rabbeinu Tam. Obviously the Chazon Ish'nikkes and Briskers have their own zmanim and shiurim, but all other Prushim use that, as do some Chassidim, especially regarding zmanim like end of fasts, etc. But we do see a clear example of the absolutism that we mentioned in the header - which mind you, he wasn't the only one who was an absolutist, but he was an absolutist when it came to his OWN shittos, which is unique - I think. They say that the Rebbe Rashab was learning a Kamarner sefer when he saw how he disagrees with the Alter Rebbe, so he closed the sefer and never leaned Kamarna again. But that was the Alter Rebbe, not his own shittos. This that people like the Steipler were להשמיד ולהרג against anybody who disagreed with their Rebbe the CI, is also to be understood. In a way. But I speak of the CI alone.

POTD

Choosing an אתרוג in כפר חב"ד, today.

I'm surprised he's not looking in בני ברק, or in ירושלים by a סוחר who sells אתרוגי ברוורמן, ליפקוביץ, חזון איש, or at least a תימנ'ער.

Do you know this man?

.....גוטע פריינט מיט'ן אייבערשטען

From the Marmuresh/Carpathen Yizkor Book (1968)

Free Translation:

We know that Reb Mordchelle from Nadvorneh would daven very late every day. Before beginning to daven he would say with a nigun, full of devotion, that would arouse the hearts of those present - I imagine he davened with a minyan, even that late -

"Ribbono Shel Olam, leybediger (how do you translate "Leybedig?") king and Creator. I've tardied, but you know that I wasn't playing cards, nor was I at the theater, and that I only served you."

They say in the name of the last Brisker Rov that he was "unimpressed" with those who are in the realm of Tzaddik Goyzer veHKB"H Mekayem. HKB"H Goyzer VeHatzaddik Mekayem was more to his liking - he liked those Tzaddikim who did what the A-mighty asked of all Jews. If I may say so - this is one of those fundamental differences we see between the disciples of the Besh"t and those that did not take on his ways. Reb Mordchelle Nadvorner was one of the Rebbes of Reb Shayelle Kerstierer and one of those who pushed him to be a Rebbe and "helf Yidden" like he did. Reb Mordchelle may not have done Chesed on the "farnem" that Reb Shayelle did, which was stand on his feet and cook and prepare and serve food and drink to poor and tired Yidden, but in his hoyf a Jew was helped, and that may have been the number one activity there too. His travels all over Rumania, Hungary and Galicia were for that puropse too, to help Yidden. And it was from him that Reb Shayelle learned how to do what he did for 50 years. Reb Mordchelle also invited him to come to B'Kerestur after the heirs of Reb Hershelle Lisker weren't happy that he was praving Rabbisteve in their town and made it known so. Imagine that happening: A Rebbe inviting another Rebbe to a small town to set up shop there... That's what many of you don't like about Chassidim in general. They think that have some direct line to G-d and don't need to "wait on line" like everybody else. Why did Reb Mordchelle think that G-d would forgive him, just because he said that cute line every day, that he wasn't playing cards or going to the theater? Couldn't he do what he was doing later in the day, just like the Brisker Rov did?! And the Chazon Ish?! And the Chofetz Chaim?!
