in 1957 there would not be 10 people who believed in הקב"ה were it not for ------------

These words were said in פרשת בא, תשי"ז. Many of  you may have heard it over the years, but figured it was hearsay, or exaggerated to a certain extent. But here it is. שווארץ אויף ווייס.

"מי אני ומה אני to admonish the Jewish people." But I cannot be silent, being that I am the only one - there is nobody else to assist me. If not for the Satmar Rov saying it again and again, reprimanding the Jewish people, "there would not be a minyan of Jews who believe in G-d."

Now, if you ask a Satmar talmid he'll tell you that the Rebbe zichroyne livruche means to say that all Jews who did not believe like him didn't believe in G-d fully, because they were tainted by heresy. Namely ציונות. So it's not such a major statement. Kind of like the vort from Reb Chaim Brisker: נעבאך אן אפיקורס איז פארט אן אפיקורס. I suppose we can count the Brisker Rov and his sons, and Reb Amrom Bloy in his minyan, since they were all still alive. Other than that all the few hundred Edah'nikkes and Toldos Ahron'ers would also not have been clean and pure. Yossel Ashkenazi doesn't make the cut, in my opinion, either. Nor does any of the tier 1 gedolim who lived in Eretz Yisroel in 1957. Like the Tchenibner Rov and the Gerrer Rebbe. You can assume that he waited until the passing of the Chazon Ish a few years before, and the Belzer Rov the previous summer, to make such a statement, otherwise the world would be up in arms. So to be fair let's say that he's only counting those who were alive at the time. Those who passed away already didn't need him to teach them right from wrong. There would less than ten true G-d fearing Jews alive in 1957 were it not for him making his points over and over again. The late Ponovizher Rosh Yeshiva (d. 2002 2001) like to say that he always looked over his shoulder to see what the Satmar Rov was saying, to keep him from going overboard in his quest to juggle the issues that Haredi Jewry faced in the Holy Land. But it seems like that didn't suffice for the SR.

So I ask my many Satmar friends here: did the SR mean this in a literal sense? that all those who are tainted by ציונות - vote in elections, take Government money, etc. - do not believe in G-d? and if he wasn't being literal what else falls into that category? What else did he say that he didn't REALLY mean?

How DO we judge success? thoughts on the 50th anniversary of מבצע תפילין

Received via e-mail:

"We did not hear that there were some people abstaining from eating treife food or refraining from desecrating Shabbos or that they were educating their children in religious schools, not under the heretics; I only heard that they put on tefillin." These are the words of the build up to סאטמאר רב'ס condemnation (tirade) against the big התעוררות for תפילין in Israel after the miraculous 6 Day War. The argument on its own is very weak; After all, did he hear how many people became נוטרי הברית after his annual שובבי"ם campaigns? since when does a התעוררות get measured by its success? He was leading an anti אגודה campaign smearing all גדולי ישראל who did not see everything going on in the Holy Land as heresy..... it was a big machloka and caused lots of infighting between frum Jews, who were thus being עובר on many איסורי תורה. (not some sins sourced in non halacha) Did he ever decide to close shop on his anti Israeli election campaign, since it got nowhere? Every year more than half a million frum Jews participate in the Israeli election and it's only growing... why does only מבצע תפילין need a consequential success statistic? All the above aside, what will we do if we will help him in his quest to find Jews that did change because of tefillin ? I think we may have done just that. Or rather we discovered it, the actual work was done by others. This פסח the Mishpacha magazine ran a long article on a popular right wing conservative talk show host, who is leading an Orthodox lifestyle, eating kosher, Orthodox schools for his kids and Shomer Shabbos, all because of his one act of putting on tefillin. It was the holy soul "Schwartzie" ע"ה,  the Chabad shliach Shlomo Schwartz at UCLA.  In Michael Medved's words "Tefillin is the key metaphor for his Judaisim." That was what started him on his path to a life of full Torah & yiddsihkiet. This is not a 770 paid PR stunt. Will this story and thousands of other similar stories change a mind in that camp??? I do see that a harsh anti religious and anti Zionist Haaretz columnist who wrote an anti tefillin rant 9 years ago, did change his mind on tefillin, (See below)

Maybe. Just Maybe our "frum" brothers will also get a הרהור תשובה.

Protesting about a problem doesn't - necessarily - mean you care (Guest Post)

Click here for an interview with Mr. Tzvi Aldroti.

Hirshel Tzig:

You don't know me, but people who know me say I have too much rage and I have to stop already, since we live in a great multicultural world and everything is peaceful and tranquil. I just haven't seen it yet, but that's how it is. Maybe it's my age, or where I grew up. Yet, before I realize what everybody else has already I have something interesting to point out. The Satmars are famous (or infamous) for their protests to fix Israel's ills (which was - in my humble opinion - just a ploy by the Satmar Rov to get the Pupa Ruv and Tzehelemer Ruv types on board of his political protests. He knew they were lovers of Israel.) Take Reb Yoelish's fight against the mixed swimming pool in Jerusalem, the mixed pool on Bedford Avenue corner Rodney in the YMCA - right in front of his nose - bothered him very little. Only the mixed pool 3,000 miles away outraged him obsessively, (they write in the new foreword of על הגאולה ועל התמורה he poshut got sick from it) at the same time you see the Lubavitcher Rebbe trying his best to change the whole Israeli PUBLIC SCHOOL system from learning co-ed. Speaking to anybody and everybody that could have any influence over there. Obviously the Rebbe got nowhere, as the the Leader of the 11211 community got nowhere either. But you detect a real non political pain from a erliche yid - if nothing else - and not trying to win points with anybody.....

The narrative by the Hungarian chareidim is that celebrating a birthday is almost prohibited, since it's obviously "Chukas Hagoi." Then we have the chazal of Mutav Sheloi Nivreh. But the more you delve in to it, the more you realize the list of Gedolim that did participate or celebrate the Yom Holedes is quite long. From the great Hungarian Ish Mesorah the Ksav Sofer to the Lithuanian Chofetz Chaim, and then put the Ruzhiner/Viznitzer Rebbes into the mix. What you have is a list that spans the spectrum. Of all the gedolim I was shocked to see that the Satmar Ruv participated in an annual celebration from one of his philanthropists, Reb Yisroel Zupnick, and received a nice sum at the Melava Malka/party. $72,000, to be exact. We see here how the protagonist Jacobowitz liked these kind of fundraisers, since he didn't need to bring his own checkbook, Zupnick was taking care of the bill... It seems that the Baal Divrei Yoel didn't see the party and his participation as a contradiction to his old shtetel mentality, that which he worked tirelessly to refurbish on US soil...

Read it here

In the interest of full disclosure I will say that the author is one Reb Yitzchok Brand, a Rov who goes up to har haBayis, as we see from the picture below, center. I do not condone what he does, nor is this an approbation of the above pamphlet. The topic has been getting lots of publicity lately, with Daf Yomi just passing the end of Kesubos, where the topic is discussed. Many maggidei shiur will stop and discuss the whole topic, VaYoel Moshe and all. All of them do it with the greatest respect for the author, despite disagreeing.

Seems to me that the day is commemorated more so to make money for institutions that carry his name, than to honor his memory, connect to him, and follow in his ways. The dinners, the countless number of booths collecting money. But to each his own. I won't tell his adherents how to do it.

Ysoscher Katz proves to us that blood is thicker than water

See his latest thoughts on Tablet Magazine's attacks on Hasidic Rebbes

Blood is family. Family and friends. Water is, well, I'm not quite sure what water is. I guess it means acquaintances, fellow bloggers... I'm not here to attack or "expose" Reb Sucher. His story is well-known, and he makes no bones about his past life. And you might say that I can very much relate to him, the defending his old friends part. There were several occasions lately where I could've written about stuff in the frum media, but I knew that the people who would REALLY enjoy it are the haters, and why give them fodder? And you might say that I admire his courage to stand up and defend his people. Especially if they're (read: Tablet magazine) just hocking. This despite the fact that Tablet is using the same kind of logic Reb Ysoscher would use on any other topic. I can write about these topics, not you, Tablet Magazine! So maybe there's hope for Reb Ysoscher, after all?

Hirshel: Satmar Rov wanted mikvaos built in small towns for ho-hum Yidden

A reader writes:

This Teshuva of the Satmar Ruv is a very important teshuva to study... It wavers constantly, many parts of it go against his standard philosophy, but he also derides the people who were against it as Zionist sympathizers... I have so far no idea where this town was; Maybe in the Helmetzer seforim we can figure out more details. It's my assumption that they were some kind of Aguda/Yeshiveshe people that were against it. On the other hand, did he not believe in the הלעיטהו לרשע וימות idea on which the Hungarian Orthodoxy had built their whole existence as of 1866. Somehow if it was not Zionist Klausenburg, Neologen Viznitz --- it seems had no problem and considered them Jews ... between the lines he is saying that the yeshiva velt is full of Bnei Ni**h. This teshuva should be the Constitution of Mikveh USA.

did we just witness the biggest זיוף of all time in RAK's new biography by א.

"ב"ה

Read it and weep, folks. The best we can hope for is that Suresky didn't bother to vet his photos. Otherwise the business is bankrupt. We can just close up shop. I guess the need to win the approval of Satmar is what did them in. It wasn't enough that the SR admired RAK, they needed to create a picture of a supposed meeting that never happened, ala Stalin in Poland, for those of you who know that joke. Goes to show you.

Addendum to August 19th 2012 post - wedding 19 Kislev 5709

That was at the Kabbolas Ponim. This was at the chuppah. Pirsum Rishon? Maybe. Lubavitch Archives seems to think so. I think I may have seen this picture before. Same Lubavitcher wedding. The chosson, zol gezunt zein, doesn't look impressed.

The ד' מינים only symbolize אחדות - Please keep the other types of Jews far, far away

You can say this about the Satmar Rov; he doesn't go with the flow. He sticks to his guns, no matter what. While everybody else is busy trying to unite, he keeps his fences up. Builds them even bigger and stronger. And he has all the proof in the world to back up his point. This is from the sefer חידושי תורה, not the דברי יואל. I wonder if it was published in the דבר"י as well.

From when he was a young child doing a favor for another Yid - a very noble act, indeed - until the all-important question of "is one allowed to leave Golus by himself?" (whatever that means) There is nothing they could put on the question sheet for the young skulls full of mush to answer?! Nothing about his diligence in Torah, how he conducted his Rabbonus'en, his leadership qualities, his Yeshivos and Talmidim?! This is - IMHO - a terrible discredit to the SR! When did Satmar - or at least the כתה ב' רבי in this particular school become so crazy? To his credit he does go back and ask one non-shittah question towards the end, asking about being שטאלץ when doing Mitzvos and not being embarrassed when doing it, but then he goes right back to the ויואל משה & על הגאולה, so that the הכל הולך אחר החיתום is fulfilled....

Oy.

"?מי צריך את הבנין שלהם"

The Satmar Rebbe holds nothing back when meeting with the Zvehiller Rebbe, Reb Mordche, of Yerushalayim in 5723. The עגל הזהב was not ע"ז ממש, but ציונות is... You can tell that the SR is somewhat annoyed by the ZR's "בטלנות" when it comes to getting his finances in order. It'll take but a few minutes to read all the pages. Click on images to enlarge.
