Hirshel,
The attached pictures might be of interest.
One of my great-great grandfathers is in both of them. It is a field shul in the tzar’s army in the first World War. I think it is a Yom tov, and a goy took the picture. [See one holding Shofar - HT]

These pictures are great historical documents. Thanks for the reader who posted them.
But I believe it would be very important to identify that grandfather on the picture (with some basic biographical facts of his life), it adds a lot to a picture when we at least somebody can be identified.
Please.
I believe the Divre Chaim said that Mashiach would come bizechus the mesiras nefesh of Jewish soldiers. Zecher zaddikim livrocha !!!
Interesting that one of the soldiers in pic#2 has the tallis draped over his shoulders like a scarf keminhag the Reform in America.I always thought that the Reform and Conservative just made up that scarf like tallis.
It would be ironic to get hold of a photo of many of the German Jews who were in the army in WWI.
Schneur
the Belzer Rov said the opposite that the newish soldiers are lengthening the golus since in shomaim they love their avoda.
There is a photo of Finnish troops in WW2 Davening under the Finnish swastika flag.
Josh
there were Jews in Finland?
The story of my alter-zeide is too long BUT BKITSUR NIMROTS:
his name wwas Slomo Feivel Hakohen Perlin.
He was born in Zaboltisk, which is next to Priluki (Cernigovskaya Gubernya). After the first world war got married and settled in Pavlovsk (suburb of Leningrad). He was the only frim alter zeide i had (belive it or not)- even in soviet passport he called his daghters with jewish names. he was jailed in 1937 (like everybody else in that stupid country) came out (that was a nes) in 1939. Was niftar in winter of 1942 during the German blockade of Leningrad. My father is named after him (no wonder he became frim :)). I am his only ir-einikel who did not inter-married.:(:). Typical Russian Jewish Tsures.
Re: The Divrei Chaim
What ever happened on this? Did Moshiach ever come?
well to answer that it depends who ur waiting for r"l.....
Heshy,
I was shocked to see on the web that the mantel of the new sefer torah dedicated in Zemach Zedek claims the Rebbe z''l as "Nosi Hador"
Firstly, why write something like that on a sefer torah bichlal?More importantly, how can Rabbis Lesches and Markowitz allow such strange things? The Rebbe was nistalek long ago, unfortunately.Unless I'm crazy,I have never heard of a Nosi Hador that is not alive, it's a contradiction in terms basically.I always thought it's only the Meshichisten that spread such rubbish. Please tell me I'm wrong.
1. Wearing tallis as a scarf, many Sefardim wear it like this as do Yemenite Jews.
2.Russian Chusid.
Its important to pronounce Hebrew like a Russian (White Russian ) jew its chasid not chusid and its frum not frim.
Leningrad blockade, my uncle Reb Zalman Kurnitzer mashgiach of TTL in nevel died there too at the same time.Tens of thousands of Jews died there like the Rashags older brother Reb Falik.
In the Finnish_Russian War you had Jewish soldiers from Finland fighting on the Nazi side. The only case where fully Jewish soldiers fought on the Axis side. The chief rabbi of Finnland was the Galicianer Mizrachi leader and schlar Dr. Simon Federbusch who aithored a book calld hachasidus VeZion.
The Jews of Finland were mostly cantonist soldiers who were allowed to live there by the Czar prior to the country's independence.
Shneur,
My Father's side is from West Ukrain/Moldova(Mohilev- Podolsk/Chernovits/Bredshon)Chortkover Chasidim - I know my avurah well :). That's where the minhugim go after.
The Finland story- that's very sad.
I've read about it.
The worst part is ,however,
that in the 1 WW, YIDEN HAD TO KILL YIDEN.(German vs. Russians)
There was a famous shnore in Williamsburg- mr. Gelb. He told somebody once the reason he was oisek all his life in Tzedoko.
He was a soldier in the First WW, and he killed a Russian sniper. When this sniper was falling off the tree, mr. Gelb heard him scream "Shma Yisroel(or Isruel :))"
The man was not himself for the rest of his life....
Mr Gelbof Willi was a lamed vovnik, if its the guy that davened in Klausenburg
Mr Gelb was a huge tsadik- look how his life was changed because of a 100% shoigeg.
not shoigeg. Oimer mutar or habo l'horgekho hashkeim l'horgoi but not shoigeg.
Russian Chusid,
Mr Gelb was german or Austrian (Galicia)? I would assume austia since someone posted that he davened in Klausenberg and not vien for example...
2-Mr. Gelb was a tzadik, no question.
Shneur: The Yemenites, and some Russians do the scarf thing, but cover their backs k'halacha. One of the only pictures of my last frum ancestor before my BT mother(elter-elter zaide) is like this.
Heshy,
I posted a question about the hachnosas sefer torah that Tzemach Tzedek had and that on the sefer torahs mantel it was written that the Rebbe z"l was "nosi hador".I asked how Rabbis Lesches and Markowitz allowed such a thing.
You did not post it or try and explain it.True the question has no relevance to the thread, but:You do post irrelevant posts quite often, don't you?
Anyway, can you explain what you are doing in a shul that claims that the Rebbe z"l ,long ago beginzei meromim, is still "Nosi Hador"?
I think that this question is legitimate,no?
I remember seeing a biography from Mr Gelb, maybe I am mistaking
