A young Max Gifter had dreams of becoming the Chief Rabbi of the Hitler Government...

I kid you not. See for yourselves!

It's not clear if this was some kind of inside joke. As far as I remember he was not of German extraction, so it wasn't some kind of retracing his roots ambition. And AH ימ"ש was only in power for like 4 months at that time. Source

I've been made to understand that the visit this week of Reb Aryeh Finkel, son חז"פ, grandson of Reb Lazer Yudel, and Roshiveh of Mir-Brachfeld is not so poshut. Despite the grapes and glass of tea it wasn't what Reb Malkiel had in mind to be doing that day. And it wasn't his choice in guest speaker. But he too had to bow to the folks at Hazon Ish 5 --- not that RALS actually is at the helm of this באנדע, they just use him. But what I don't understand is why they sent a B-list (excuse the expression) gadol over here. Yes, he's elderly, but still. No REAL star power. Then again, Reb Moshe Hillel Hirsh is there every second week. Reb Berel Povarski is not welcome there, (הערה לאח"ז  - at least he wasn't until this week...) and Reb Aron Leib is too old. That leaves whom? Reb Dov Yaffe? nah. So RAF was the only choice. They already used the Satmar Rebbe... LOL.

The history of our brethren in Di Bukovina is a sad one, if you think of it. There wasn't much religious Judaism to speak of after WWI. This has been discussed here on the blog in the past. The late Vizhnitzer Rebbe, was born during WWI. He was raised both in Marmures, in Groswardein, and in Vilchovitz. He didn't get to see what was in Vizhnitz. You might ask: If, as the book tells us, the young ones all went to Germany to study, where are all the young Bukoviner professors and doctors? And this is all before WW2 came along and destroyed it completely. What we bring you is an excerpt from the biography of the late Vizhnitzer Rebbe of Bene Beraq.  Surprisingly they are quite open about the situation there, not trying to gloss it over and make it one euphoric mass of Ch'nyokes like some do when they speak of the Alte Heim. But what they do seem to do on their quest for the truth and honesty is maybe overdo it? It's mamesh as if there were absolutely no young chassidim left in Vizhnitz! Then, when speaking about the Vishiver Rov, the older brother of the Imrei Chaim, the one who had a Yeshiva with hundreds of bachurim hurreving in Torah, they make him sound like a Daf Yomi maggid shiur, you'll excuse the expression...

In a little shtiebel, on the outskirts of Boro Park, this Yiddele was davening like it was going out of style

בהמשך להמדובר לעיל about Reb Moshe's psak to be מצרף any Jew to any דבר שבקדושה; here's what the Brisker Rov is to have said about this: Not so clear to you? well, it's a pretty murky situation. That's the problem here. Each one has his story with the BR and each one has a nice lomdus to go with it! I guess it depends on who was asking, what was going on a the time, and בכלל - the general מצב רוח. You can only wait so long for a צענטער... I'm just glad we're not meant to pasken halochoh leMa'aseh from Meller's books. Were there any comments about Reb Moshe from the Brisker Rov, or did that start post the המ"ר?

Received via e-mail: "Today I bought these 2 records outside of 770. There is a guy that sells old seforim and shaimos sometimes and he had a bunch of old records. I was looking for these for along time. I have digitized them and I want you to put them up l'zchus harabim. It says on the record that he made 3 records. If anyone has the third he should please send the recording, as we only have the first two. Put up the pictures of the records as well. This was hafotzas hamayonos 50 years ago!!! Listen to chassidus in your own home. The person these came from probably was not a Lubavitcher, judging from the rest of his collection." - [This is a young Reb Yossel Weinberg ע"ה.

I don't know אדון מלר, I've never met him. As you can see his latest work is on Reb Chaim Brisker. I borrowed this book for a few days, until he owner finishes his thousands of other new books and gets around to reading this. Lots of nice pictures, many of them thanks to the world wide web and frum forums. Lots of agenda too, in this case wannabe קנאות like in his other Brisker books. Like he'll quote extensively from Reb Meir Berlin (Bar-Ilan) but never by name. Reb Yoshe Ber from Boston is respected, but mostly in the footnotes, not in the פנים. Reb Yehuda Leib Don-Yichye, the Chabadsker Mizroch'nik who has a talmid of RCS in Volozhin is just all the other great talmidim, quoted extensively despite his Zionist sympathies. What am I saying "sympathies?" he was a full-fledged Tziyoni! So go figure! Like most other biographies published these days, many, many pages are devoted to the "times" of the protagonist. In this case there's tons of material on the Volozhiner Yeshiva, of which Reb Chaim was a part of for several years and where he taught his new derech haLimud.

So there's biography and there's dissection of character, or whatever that's called. Basically the author deciding on a topic and then deciding how Reb Chaim fits into that mold. For some reason there was a need for the author to tell us how both the Beis HaLevi, RCS and the BR all needed to hit their children in order for them to keep on learning and chazzering all the time from a very young age. And how the Rov supposedly condoned that behavior, referring to himself and saying "We obviously see that it worked!" Other than prove to those that say that the extreme hanhogos and shiurim stem from נערווען.... what does that add to the story? Reb Aron Leib Steinman, the more liberal יליד בריסק, doesn't buy all the hitting in the chinuch and he says that the only time that the BR got petsh from his father was when he disrespected his zeide Reb Refoel Shapira as a young lad of 13 at his Bar Mitzvah pshetl. Which is more in line with "normal" chinuch, especially of children of Rabbonim who had good heads and took to learning from a very young age. But we all know what the Briskers think of RALS. "RealBrisker chinuch includes a good dose of petsh! But I will say this much for Meller: He manages to make all others and their mesorah of derech haLimud totally inferior to Reb Chaim and Brisk! As if until they חלילה almost wasted their time on pilpul and sevoros....

The סוכת דוד says that according to Rav Moshe Feinstein you can be מצרף ANY Jew to ANY דבר שבקדושה, no matter his level of observance.

sorry for the premature crop.

I haven't heard that shluchim necessarily rely on THIS particular psak, but it is nice to see. Maybe this will help shluchim in their hasbarah... I don't see Reb Dovid Kviat as having any particular agenda neither. His Slonimer background and Mirrer education doesn't make for him to want to allow this. But he's quoting RMF. And the vort sounds almost Chassidish; ניצוץ של קדושה - נקודה פנימית, good stuff!

Read his biography here
On page 36 - זייט זעקס און דרייסיג, rather - we read about a siyum haShas made by RMAK shortly before his passing in 1926. What is noteworthy about the siyum is that RMAK wasn't privileged to learn much back in der alter heim, but once he moved to America and established himself financially- is when he began to sit and learn in a serious way. At that occasion the author Yaakov Mark - who we quoted here many years ago - was invited to speak at the grand siyum and suggested that the members of the Tzemach Tzedek Nusach hoAri shul on Henry Street make a chalukas haShas themselves and finish it in time for Yud Tes Kislev! Unfortunately RMAK passed away a short time later and for fear that maybe some people would forget to finish their mesechta they published it in his biography which was published shortly after his passing. Most of us will recognize Reb Dovid Shifrin in the list of lomdim, but the other names mostly not.

I'm not sure many Lubavitchers are thinking about גימ"ל תמוז as much as Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb and the Jewish Action

As least not in an as serious אופן as RTHW. First he speaks to Steve Savitsky.

Then he wants us to know about the Torah. The Rebbe's Torah. Because truthfully the Rebbe's Torah - as is true every Tzaddik - is the means by which to connect to him. It's nice to hear stories and mofsim and even to be inspired by the בכיות on a גרינעם מיטוואך. But it's all about the Teyreh. Then I happen to open the Jewish Action today and what do I see? 20 pages and a special section on the Rebbe! The section entails the following:

1) An unparalleled leader - Rabbi Jonatan Sacks
2) Why the Lubavitch movement thrives in the absence of a living Rebbe
3) The Rebbe and the Rav - Rabbi A. Rakeffet-Rothkoff
4) The Contribution of the Lubavitcher Rebbe to Torah Scholarship

It's just nice to see.

Not a Harry pounds home what he wants us to hear re: "Open Orthodoxy" - GUEST POST

Rav Yaakov Perlow  - the Novominsker Rebbe - justifiably set off a firestorm with his remarks at the Agudah dinner about Open Orthodoxy. The criticism on the left demonstrate the truth of his words. Deep shameful guilt, borne out by a lack of fealty to the Torah. There is a famous story told about the Chernobler Maggid, insert alternative name at whim. The Maggid called a meeting of his townspeople to raise the needed funds to supply the town with a Esrog. As predictably as the ma yofis'nicks of Vosizneias fame, the town's miser asked why the Esrog was more important than hachnosas kallah for an orphan getting married that week... The Chernobler Maggid needed only to point out that the miser had not contributed to that either, because he deemed something else to be of higher priority at the time he was approached for money for Hachnosas Kallah. There are always many issues that are deserving of the wider tzibbur's attention. Every issue gets its turn to be on the front burner. Tznius, Shalom Bayis, tuition, machlokes, the OTD crisis, and on and on. Woe is to us if we will allow outsiders and fringe elements to set the agenda! I don't know the answers to all the issues. The simplest manner of determining where to place your trust can be done with the litmus test of Lesheim Shomayim. Whom would you accuse of it, summit makers of Footsteps and their attention seeking noch shleppers (bar for Yitzchok Adlerstein) or Rabbi Perlow and his fellow Moetzes members?

we thank Camp Agudah for the vintage photo.

(Hirshel Tzig says: While YCT and the Open Orthodoxers are ווערט דאס געלט, we can argue that the venue to criticize them may not have been the correct one, as well as the need to give YCT much undeserved attention. If I were a betting man I'd bet that 90% of those attending have no idea who YCT or Open Orthodoxy is. Now they all know... They're minuscule, to say the least; the supposed danger to Orthodoxy just isn't there. They're not taking over mainstream Orthodoxy. I think - and who am I? - that it was at best premature, and at worst totally unnecessary. And besides, they got the mayor in hot water from some idiot NYT reporter. Just kidding.)

ZSIDÓ HÍREK BUDAPEST

The "enlightened" ones like to point to the Bilgorajer Rov's parting droshoh in 1944 as proof that the Tzaddikim at that time had no idea what was coming. Even as late as Spring 1944. That the secular take issue with that is a given. Even the Belzers have a problem with it... See what the Lubavitcher Rav Oberlander says about that speech in the caption.
