It looks like grandiose weddings are becoming the norm even in reclusive families like Brisk. Well, that's how it looks in the pictures, anyway. I don't know if it was grandiose in the sense that they had a choice of beef or chicken and a smorgasbord. But it's a nice hall in Talpiot with a lot of people in attendance. They did, it seems however, follow the תקנות of yesteryear not to have full כלי זמר,  only a drummer=פויקער. The wedding here took place last week in Yerushalayim. Velvel Soloveitchik ben Reb Dovid is married to Reb Berel Povarsky's daughter. His son now married the daughter of Reb Peretz Meyerson, son-in-law of Reb Refoel Soloveitchik, Reb Dovid's younger brother. Keeping it in the family, just like the Rebbes and leHavdil royalty. (At least until recently that's what royalty did.) So, I guess whoever didn't come for Reb Dovid came for Reb Berel.

My personal favorite: The מחותן: רבי נתנאל פרץ מאירזון חתן רבי רפאל סאלאווייטשיק. If I was a Brisker I'd likely look like him. Maybe I should become one.

The Bobover Rebbe, (r), and the Veitzener Rov, R. Tzvi-Hirsh Meisels, zt"l, (l), dancing the "Rebbe Reb Meilech's Tantz" by a wedding in the "early years," as is evident from the lack of tznius police... The dance has a pair holding hands and alternatively going "over and under" another paid holding hands. Tough to explain, but if you've seen it you know what I mean. The tune used to accompany the dance is what Y"T Erlich used for his "nisht emes" composition.

Addendum to August 19th 2012 post - wedding 19 Kislev 5709

That was at the Kabbolas Ponim. This was at the chuppah. Pirsum Rishon? Maybe. Lubavitch Archives seems to think so. I think I may have seen this picture before. Same Lubavitcher wedding. The chosson, zol gezunt zein, doesn't look impressed.

 UPDATE: We've been getting reports saying that it was NOT that wedding. Please stand by for possible changes.

The Satmar Rov at a Lubavitcher Chasuna - well, half Lubavitch, anyway - in 1954 - כמדומני. The Chosson was HaTomim Reb Meir Zajac, ZG"Z, a son of Reb Simcha Zajac from Brazil, who was sent there by the Frierdige Rebbe before WW2. Meir and his brothers all came to New York to learn in Lubavitch. The Kallah was the daughter of a very staunch Satmarer Chossid, Reb Shloime Braver, ע"ה. Seated in the foreground are l-r: Reb Hirsh Kotlarsky, Reb Mordche Avrohom Yeshaya Groner and Reb Shmuel Levitin, as far as I can tell. Behind the Rov stands the chosson's brother Reb Leibel Zajac, and seated in the background, second from left is the Rosh Yeshiva, Reb Mordche Mentlik, ע"ה. We also recognize Reb Yossel Ashkenazi before he switched to the more "Chassidishe beaver hat." To Reb Yossel's left, with the gray suit and tie and black homburg is the mechutan Reb Shlomo Braver. Behind him, with the flat beaver hat, is a young Payer Ruv. Second from right, standing with the light suit, is Reb Chaim Alter Roth ע"ה, of Boro Park-נתניה, and standing on the extreme left is Reb Binyomin Williger שליט"א of Boro Park. The Chosson usually חזר'ט א מאמר חסידות at the קבלת פנים, which is why I asked what I did, whether or not the Rov was present at that time. I dare say that the מצב looks a bit uncomfortable there.... This is by no means a "new" picture - it's been out there for a very long time. I just don't think anybody ever noticed the Lubavitcher element to the picture.

Mishpacha shows some flashes of greatness...

We had very high hopes for Mishpacha magazine when it first appeared on the newsstands, but we then realized that the masses still make up the majority, and they need to be catered to, not to mention that they get very nervous when any magazine tries to educate them in new ways... So, for the most part, save for an article here and there about Lubavitch or Rabbi Hershel Schachter, The Yeshivisher Oylem's two pet peeves, Mishpacha takes the road most traveled. And that's a good thing! I have young children who read it every week, may they live and be well, בלע"ה, and I need them to at least start off rock-solid! But this here article is good! It asks the questions about the city of מונקאטש that need to be asked, and gives honest answers, all the while giving good historical background to the famous film we've seen many times by now.
