Is this the mentalblog influence?

It seems to me that recently pictures have been published, and biographies printed by the "unofficial official" Chabad websites that we would not have seen years ago. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that outside authors, professors, and historians have been digging deep and publishing their finds. This in turn has made Chabad look like a bunch of coverup artists. The best response to accusations like this is usually to publish these finds yourself, and COL has been doing it lately with the help of Yosef Y Kaminetzky of Kfar Chabad, who found many photos and artifacts related to the Rebbe and his family. Above is the latest find, a heretofore unnamed person, who judging from recent other pictures they published, is probably the Rebbe's first cousin, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, son of his uncle Reb Shmuel.

using ones fingers to block the unbearded part of the face- it is interesting to note the striking resembelance to the Rebbe. If this is indeed the Mendel son of R'shmuel (the Rebbe's uncle) this resemblance can easily be explained by the identical dna: that is R'Shmuel and his brother R'Levik married two sisters.

He looks like Yanovsky.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

well, if he is the Rebbe's cousin then he's a Yanovsky descendant as well.

Anonymous said...

has anyone raised the possibility that it may be the Rebbe's brother? I know there are lubavitchers who have his pictures

Anonymous said...

Not the brother, looks nothing like him.

Anonymous said...

he looks more Bukhari than Yanovsky to me. But that's just me.

The DNA would not be identical. We each inherit a ramdom(ish) 50% of our father's DNA and 50% of our mother's DNA. This means that two brothers do not have identical DNA, unless they're identical twins. On average they will be 50% identical. If they marry two sisters then the children of the two unions will once again share an average of 50% of their DNA.

JOE IN AUSTRALIA...
it's been a while since biology but- correct me if i'm wrong- if there is on average a "50%" (chance) they'll have identical dna then wouldn't the chances for that happening increase with the birth of each child?

If this really is the Rebbe's cousin they should have taken care to have him buried in a Jewish cemetary instead of painting a yarmulke on his head...

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

Yoshe

that would be difficult, since he died years ago in a far-flung Soviet town, and nobody knew who he was. The Yarmulke was painted on just yesterday.

ernest,
someone who has a daughter, does the chance of having a son increase after the birth of every subsequent daughter?

Again we see that the myth that Lubavitch 'saved' yiddishkait is an empty one. Most Lubavitcher left Yiddishkait, just like all other groups.
Aside for a few frum families stuck in Russia.Other groups chose to flee such as the Novardoker,R'Isser Zalman Meltzers yeshiva in Slutsk,ETC.

Unfortunately this includes tse'etsoim.
Today many if not most Lubavitchers are 'converts' from other frum groups

Again we see how the idiot has risen again, this time using fancy words. There were hundreds of families of Yereim U'shleymim who left in 5706, more than any other holy Chassidic group. Those that were part of Tomchei Tmimim were saved big time.

hagigraphy is fancy when mispelled? :-) Someone's been reading Friedman et al.

''There were hundreds of families of Yereim U'shleymim who left in 5706''
And, there were millions of Jews assimilating in Russia! Hundreds of families as opposed to millions of Jews.

I don't expect you to understand this, but:The other groups left Russia!!That's why there were few others.
Try as hard as you want, use HAGIOGRAPHY (correctly spelled so hmmm is happy)but the proof in the pudding is that even Bais Horav were not saved, see this pic for example........

Just so you know some numbers
Lubavitch went from one of the most powerful well known chassidesin, to a barely heard of one.Upon arrival in Warsaw Lubavitch was barely known!Hardly any chasidim.

Anonymous said...

What happened to the Zemach Zedeks reputed 600 thousand chasidim (obviously an exaggeration but they don't say that about the Tzigs chasidim)Where are their descendants?
Assimilated that's where.
Lubavitch saved yiddishkait.Noch a bobbeh mayseh. They did not even save the 'eigeneh'

It is true that Chabad had only a minor presence in Poland, but imagian the reverse, Poland became Communist, and Ger fled to Russia. We would be writing about how Ger was only a few families etc

Dear Ernest,

The genes inherited by each child are a random(ish) copy of 50% of the father's genes and a random(ish) copy of 50% of the mother's genes.

Different siblings each inherit a different random(ish) set of copies. The odds are hugely against a pair of siblings inheriting identical sets of genes, unless they're identical twins.

R' Hirshel -

UPDATE: COL just revealed, as you'd guessed - it's Menachem Mendel, the Rebbe's cousin (from two sides), the son of R' Shmuel.

Included there is a brief "biography", if you will.

Twiselton
I was referring to The Tzigs contention that 'hundreds of Luvavitcher families left Russia in '46'
While this is true, millions of Jews had forsaken Judaism because of different ideals or hardship.Lubavitch did nothing to save them, the reason many of the Orthodox Jews in Russia were Lubavitch under the Communists was because other groups decided that the best survival tactic was to leave, such as the thousands of Novardoker boys.
More to the point, even 'bais horav' apparently was not immune to outside influences, as we see that many of the cousins etc apparently were not very religous.

Btw
Even the 'so called' anti moshichist site COL still crowns the Rebbe as Nosi Hador in this article.
Two questions for the kool aid crowd:How does a deceased person qualify as President especially since we are more than half way thru anothe generation since his passing?
The kool aiders already 'know' the Rebbe is Nosi Hador, why meantion the fact all the time?
(please not the tired Shimshon analogy about the 40 years)
(Btw, note to the election board:Could I as a Jew have at least my vote to the President of the Jews election?Don't you think that the leader of your group is not automatically President, especially since most Jews do not believe in deceased persons as president)

Actually a fascinating article.
I'm quite surprised that COL reported it.Tzig may be right about a certain realization in Lubavitch of opening up a bit.Or maybe just the competition of Shturem.
I was surprised to see that he passed on only in '87 and that his family lives here today.
(chuckled a bit when they say he named a son Lev after R'Levy Yitzchok father of the Rebbe.Lev is a goyishe name.Either he really was named Levy or they never gave him a real yiddishe nomen, in which case he seems quite far from yiddishkait)

I have
never been interested in pictures of members of the rebbe's family who were not Chassidic except for IMMEDIATE family.
May I amke a suggestion, perhaps attempts could be made in Russia to get pictures of the children of the other children of the Zemach zedek who were meshamesh in rabbanus in one manner or another.
Although I have seen them , no one has ever publisihed pictures of the mechutanim of Bais Horav Mssrs Horenstein and Menachem Mendel Gourary. If my picture of Hornstein were useable I would publish it here.
How about asking the Bobroisker's eyniklech in israel if they have other pictures of him or his son etc ?
There is a lacuna in this area and it should be rectified , but not by pictures of people who unfortunetely left the fold ( without passing judgement).

mendel was a shaygetz like all the hundreds and thousands of Talmidim she'aynom hegyonim, the heretics, the atheists, the socialists and Communists, that came out of the "Yeshivos Kedoshos" of Lita, and who learned by the Malochim and Serofim like Reb Chaim Brisker and Reb Nota Hirsh Finkel. Except that he didn't learn in those Yeshivos. They did.

Snag:

Afroh LePumeych. from what I heard, from the people that researched the issue and got the pictures, and have no reason to not believe it, Mendel and wife were basically Frum Jews, not Shkotzim like you put.

Anonymous said...

I've heard from fairly reliable sources that Mendel and his wife were basically fumme yidden - shomer shabbos (although their kids werent) and that the photo was from Mendel's wife who lives in the USA...Does anyone have more info?

I've heard that Mendel Schneerson & his wife have einiklach that are quite frum... in Israel, I think (?)
