What A Rebbishe Wedding Used To Look Like...

Let's get off the Lipa Topic and back to the what made us great, at least part of it, bringing you the best in historical documents and photographs. Here's the Bobover Rebbe's wedding in New York in 1946/1947. He had lost his first wife and some children during WWII, and had smuggled himself across the border to Hungary where he survived the war. After the war, IIRC with the help of his sister and BIL in Milwaukee, he set sail for New York and soon was to be married to the sister of the Tomashower and Czechenower Rebbe LeBeis Rubin in New York. They too were Sheyne MeYuchosim, Sanzer Eyniklech through the Babbe Chume'le, daughter of the Sanzer Rov.

Why is the file named "Skver+-Tel+Aviv+38".

(Good stuff HT, keep it coming). Re your tirade abut Lipa, 99% of your readership agrees with you, so it makes for Shalom. As an odem gadol once told me " talmid Chachamin marbim shalom, becuase everyone can hate them together, and so bring shalom amongst each other.

couple of points:

the bobover ruv survived the war in bucharest, romania - living in the home of his friend the kimpelinger rav for nearly two years.

aside from being sanzer kinder, the tomashower and czechenower were of course ben achar ben from reb usherel of ropschitz.

Some good looking Lubavitch "Shin" hats over there!

And also note how small the streimel was, not as big as those today. Why do they wear bigger ones today ? Do the Chassidim today hold from a Chazayn Ish shiur??? Did the Rebbe hold from R. Naeh's shiurim? ;-)

I think it had more to do with the tragic post war situation then it did with the desire to curb the size and farnem of chasunas. if you look at the pictures of the Bobover Chasunas, before the war, for example, the daughter of the kedushas tzion to Rav Stemple, you will see that even then in the 1930's it was a pretty "Rebbishe" looking chasuna

At least the Bobover Rebbe felt guilty enough to cling to his secular existence before being persuaded to take the mantle of leadership.

Learn the sad history of the Chasidic leadership and how they survived the war while their followers perished.

The lesson to learn is THINK FOR YOURSELF. Never be mevatel your daas to another.

Chareim today are moving forward and creating new religious forms and styles while making believe they are moving back in time to the way it was. It is quite normal and happened in many other places and movements.

At the time of the wedding the Bobover's brother in laws were unknown people. Their father was a very chashuve rav and Admor in Poland a Belzer eynikel and Belzer Chasid who opposed the Aguda. Another younger sister was married to I.B. Singer's brother rav Moshe Singer the son of the Bilgroyer rav. When Reb Moshe died in Russia during the War leaving her childless, the brother the Cheshinover (after the War) arranged for I.B. Singer to give chalitzah to the the widow.
The Cheshinover was a book collector . He was a real Hadras ponimdike Yid. Before the War he was a "zammler' for the YIVO Institute, he was a kanoi but a shtikel of a Maskil in his interests which were chiefly in folklore. I met him several times in YIVO. I became close to another brother Reb Maylech Rubin a fur merchant in BP a very geshmake Yid with 1 problem he spoke the truth about his families experiences before and after the War making him a sort of " shvarte katz in the Chassidic world. The Bobover rebbe highly regarded him. He left 2 very succesful sons.

The Mishpacha had a nice photo of Reb Shloimele with his BIL and the twins Michel and Aron last week, on his first Pesach in the states, he celebrated in Milwaukee.
his relationship with his sister was always strong even after she married the Hornestipeler Rebbe

As a orthodox magazine they have no right to do it, are you ready to dish out all your family dirty laundry?
