He talks like a sophisticated satmarer chosid.
He sees no reason of Israel as for security, just it saves Klal Yisroel from assimilation, on that view the offical line of satmar is to disagree.

And bigger surprise about his whole attitude to the medina. Wasn't he the head of mizrachi in America at one point?

Not such a big surprise that he says the Ramban was mai'ain R' Chaim.

Hirshel, what book is this from? I'd like to read more of it.

I cannot understand what about the 5th of Iyyar makes anyone think the day is worthy of saying Hallel. All that happened on that day 67 years ago was that a piece of paper was drawn up and signed by a group of dignitaries in Tel Aviv in the morning. Then later that day 7 enemy armies invaded and began a war that killed 6000 Jews and who knows how many non-Jews. Why would anyone say Hallel over such a thing!?

Its strange that Reb Meshulem Roths response is based on a teshuva in chasam sofer..
which obviously the Rav does not discus...

It's from David Holzer's book "The Rav, Thinking Aloud" where he prints taped conversations with Rav Soloveichik. For Rav Soloveichik's other shita on the Medina, see Kol Dodi Dofek.

Is kol dodi also from tapes or from talmidim?

Kol Dodi Dofek is a tape of a famous speech he gave in honor of the eighth Yom Ha'atzma'ut. The tapes in Holzer's book were of shiurim or private conversations.
