Pick 'N' Choose Chassidus

(Reb Aron T'Baum of Satmar, KJ, photos by Hydepark)

Somebody posted a Shmuess by the Satmar Rebbe, Reb Aron, about what his uncle the Satmar Rov, Reb Yoel zt"l said regarding "Nishtakchoh Toras HaBaal Shem Tov." He makes a Brisker Teyreh out of his words, and he's Mechalek between Toras and Derech HaBaal Shem, Derech HaBaal Shem is alive and well, he says, it's just the Torah that's been forgotten. He says some very pertinent and educational things there, and I think he explained some of the accomplishments of the Baal Shem Tov quite well, I just have some questions on what he does LeMayseh, based on what he said at that opportunity. He says that Derech HaBaal Shem Tov is that even simple people wear Rabbeinu Tam's Tefillin and other examples which I can't remember right now. (I can't find the transcript of the Droshoh right now) I'm also impressed and happy that he addressed the issue, and answered the critics of his illustrious uncle, which is what any MeMaleh Mokom SHOULD do, especially concerning an issue like that. These questions are pertinent to his year-round behavior, and especially so during the days (nights, rather) of Chanukah.

One of the concepts found in Chassidic Courts was that the Rebbe is like the Kohen Godol and his house/shul the Bais HaMikdosh/Kodesh HaKodoshim. In Chabad the Loshon was Gan Eden HaTachton for the Rebbe's ante-chamber and Gan Eden HoElyon for the Rebbe's room. This is something found already in the days of the Baal Shem Tov, where his Talmidim were known to say that the Aron (the one from the Mishkon/BHM"K) is "in Mezhibuzh." Thus, Chassidim would bring all kinds of exquisite gifts of silver and money just as they did in the Mishkon/Botei Mikdosh, because the Tzaddik's use of these items is just as if it was used in the Bais HaMikdosh. The Holy Ruzhiner zy"a was the most famous of the Tzaddikim that lived "royally," even wearing gold boots and riding in a gold carriage, and dressing his children and grandchildren in the finest clothing money can buy. Another not-so-famous Tzaddik who lived like that was the Rebbe MaHaRaSH of Lubavitch who when asked why he used gold utensils and such said: Petach! (fool!) "Far vemen den iz gezogt gevorren Li HaKesef VeLi HaZohov?!"

It's safe to say were it not for Toras HaBaal Shem Tov there would be no such concept of Tzaddikim living like kings on public money, being that what excuse do we use to use hard-earned money to buy luxuries like silver utensils and flashy clothing. Before Chassidus Rabbonim and Tzaddikim lived BiPerishus and barely eeked out a living, which is still the way many in the Litvishe world live today, to their credit, especially in Eretz Yisroel. I would assume that the idea of Tzaddikim using elaborate silver utensils and Chassidim giving elaborate Menorahs for their Rebbes to use is of Toras HaBaal Shem, not Derech HaBaal Shem, since it's not something that all Chassidim were given, although there may be a separate Derech for the Gutte Yidden. My question is not addressed to those that say that Toras HaBaal Shem is alive and well, they can continue to carry on in all aspects, even using large Menorahs and big silver decanters. My questions IS addressed to the Satmar Rebbe of Kiryas Joel: Rebbe, What Heter do you have to gouge out the eyes of hard-working folks that work hard yet have little to show for it? Please don't tell me about Hiddur Mitzvah, This has turned into some kind of Menorah show, and it's kind of revolting.

A Freilechen Chanukah.

Whence the Telsher Bochur?

Reader commenting on Circus Tent: My Unexciting (early) Life

The saga of Telshe in America is interesting. I heard that at one time it was so 'hot' that it was hard to get in there. Like when your father was there. So why are there so many people like your father, who learned there, but don't consider themselves Telzers? The difficulty in making Hungarians into Litvaks? Or was it more? Maybe he would have thought of himself more as a Telzer if he lived elsewhere, but living in BP, with so many Hungarians and Chassidim around, he reverted to his previous pre-Telshe state due to their influence. From what I gather, Telshe was quite large in the old days and places like Lakewood were quite small. Many Lakewood branches didn't exist yet then. I think that the advent of new Yeshivas and growth in air travel and travel to Eretz Yisroel to learn hurt Telshe in a big way. Why didn't you daven in Telshe minyan in BP ? The Telshe Rav is a Chassidishe mit a shtreimel. Sort of a funny combination there, like the photo with this post. A famous strong Litvishe Yeshiva represented by a Chossid. Amusing.

Hirshel Tzig concludes: There are a couple of misconceptions here that I'd like to address. First, that Boro Park was chock full of Chassidim 40 years ago when my father moved there. This is simply not the case. Boro Park is very different than it was 10-15 years ago, 40 years ago Al Achas Kamoh VeKamoh. There was plenty of non-chassidishe Yidden, albeit not as much Litvishe. Still, one can still find many Yidden in Boro Park that were never influenced by the transformation, and they remained the same as they ever were. Shuls like the Mirrer Minyan, Lakewood Minyan, Felder's, OAMY (2 doors down) and of course Anshei Telshe and many others still have very few Shtreimlach as steady Shabbos Mispallelim. Having said that we can rule out Boro Park influencing his decision as to where to daven, especially since he had many friends and schoolmates in the Telsher Minyan!!

The truth is I never asked Di Tatte Zol Gezunt Zein why he snubbed the Telsher Minyan all these years, with his buddy the Rov there and many friends there too. Maybe I should ask him next time we speak. I guess maybe he didn't wanna daven Ashkenaz with the Telsher twist, being that he davened Sfard despite his father davening Ashkenaz. Also, many other Hungarians that went to Telshe did become Litvaks, which is somewhat difficult to do, changing Nationalities as a Teenager, but it did happen! Also, i would think that such Torah luminaries as Reb Elya Meir Bloch, Reb Mottel Katz and Reb Boruch Sorotzkin z"l could have an influence on even an Hungarian Bochur, and especially one that didn't have a strong counter influence at home. So the question remains.

My Unexciting (early) Life

(Telzer Yeshivah in Cleveland, that's NOT me in the pic)

I was asked by a commenter here why I never say anything nice about the Yeshivos I learned in or my father did for that matter. That - according to his logic - is proof that I'm also an ingrate who has this unbridled hate for everything not Lubavitch. Nothing can be further from the truth, as anybody that knows me can testify to. Yes, there were times that I was made to feel inferior by the powers that be because of my connection to Lubavitch (and nothing else) but never did I take that any further than the person or people involved, and in many case I laughed it off as childish on their part and not worth bearing a grudge at all, especially seeing from whom those comments came from. Being that my blog is not here to expose people for what they did years ago, but rather to discuss issues, so this discussion will also not turn into an expose' of people who "hurt my feelings." I'm not someone who's haunted by abuse or things of that nature, so there's really nothing like that that you can point to and say that this was where it all began, as many are wont to do when someone changes his life's direction. What we can do is discuss my general history, anecdotes and instances and see if we understand them the same way. I do hope that those involved in my life are ok with me mentioning them, albeit in a round about way.

My father's Telsher experience mirrors that of many hundreds of other Talmidim, namely that they don't consider themselves Telshers today. He was a child of 13 years old when his parents put him on the train from Chicago and he traveled with his very Hungarian mother to the Yeshivah in Cleveland. The first 3-4 years were spent at the Mechinah - which is what the Mesivta is called - under the tutelage of such Yidden as Reb Eizik Ausband, in whose home he slept for 2 years. He had the privilege of spending time with such luminaries as Reb Chaim Stein, LBCL"C Reb Mordche Gifter, Reb Pesach Stein, Reb Boruch Sorotzkin, and Reb Mottel Katz. My whole life is filled with anecdotes from "Yeshivah," which is basically short for Telshe. With some of those he had good relationships, and with some they were not so great, as is usually the case with any Bochur in any Yeshivah. There were other, less famous personalities there that he also speaks fondly of; Rabbi Davis, Reb Meir Zelig Mann, Rabbi Helfand, Rabbi Hildesheim and others. He was there for the famous fire in the winter of '62 and for the visits of Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshivah who would visit the Yeshivah on their trips and stops in Cleveland. A year or so later the branch was founded in Chicago, and 2-3 years later he was called home to continue his studies near home. In Chicago there was 4 more years in Telshe and there were Reb A C Levin, Reb Chaim Shmelcer, Reb C D Keller among others.

Despite spending all of his formative years in Litvishe Telshe he never did become a "Telsher." Yes, we're on the alumni list of both branches and receive candles, honey, Charoses, and tapes of all kinds of Droshos, Shmuessen etc. from all the Roshei Yeshivah past and present, but it never did permeate his being like it did for many others. Other past Talmidim make every effort to be back in Yeshivah for the Yomim No'Roim, and even bentsh in the special Telsher Nusach, my Tatte ZGZ doesn't. Others davened in the Telsher Minyan in BP, we davened across the street, it so happens, not that we were avoiding the shul, c"v, that's just how it worked out. My father has many friends from Yeshivah that he's still very friendly with today that are just the same way, they never became Telshers, and their kids probably know much less about Telshe than I do. In any case, having said that, when my father married my mother, a girl of similar Hungarian background, he moved to New York and soon needed to find a place to educate his children. The girls had started out in Bobov and continued in Margareten, Beis Aizik Tzvi and Bais Yaakov,, but the boys had no place yet. So my Tatte asked a Telsher friend who already had a son in Cheder and he advised a Chassidisher Cheder in Boro Park that was named after a Transylvania town - Spinka. This decision had a profound impact on my entire immediate family and changed our life's course, I think.

Enough for one day, More later iy"h.

More Here

Reb Nissen was another of the legendary Shluchim who went from the frying pan to the fire. A few weeks ago we lost Reb Shlomo Matusov. Now Reb Nissen, who was in Casablanca for the first decade or so with Reb Shlomo, has left this world. In 1960 he was sent by the Rebbe to Tunis and basically stayed there for the rest of his life, despite his failing health.

recent passings

(Photo from here)

Two people of the older generation, personalities really, left us recently. The first is the Margaretener Rov, and the second - maybe 10 days later - was his Mechutan the legendary Mr. Fisher of Yeshivas Ch'san Sofer. The Margaretener Rov was one of the very few who still had positions in pre-WW2 Europe, being elected as Rov of SentMiklos, Transylvania in 1937. He was a kid from Drogemeresht, Romania who came to learn in the Yeshiva in Margareten that was started by the great Talmid of the Chasam Sofer, the MaHarYATZ, Reb Yehoshua Ahron Tzvi Weinberger, and was then lead by his son Reb Shmuel Zalman z"l. There he was given the title "Rosh Yeshivah," which was a term used for the eldest and Choshuvste Bochur. He also learned in Kashau and Nagyfoli. During WW2 he was granted a very rare certificate to travel to the Holy Land and was all ready to travel, but their lives were saved by their child falling ill, which they later learned was a blessing, since their ship sunk with all of their belongings aboard. His Rebbetzin was the only one of 11 children of Reb Shmuel Zalman that survived the Holocaust, and she continued to carry on the Margareten name until her death in 1974. After the War he decided to return to Margareten from Israel in order to rebuild what was left and to reorganize the Yeshivah. However, that too didn't last long with the ultimate ascent of the Magyar Communists to power in 1946. After a decade in Paris he eventually made his way to the United States. My father tells me of the time when he had a dream of building a community in "Lower Bensonhurst," when he had his Yeshivah there. That never worked out for them, although I know some of my siblings did attend school there. So, other than the Shul on 14th Avenue, and the Shechitah that carries his name, he was not what you'd call a modern-day "success" story like some of his lesser colleagues were. His only son died r"l BeChayov after collapsing on the street on hot summer's day in 5753, leaving his widowed father heartbroken. Although I never did meet him, though I lived near him all my life, I feel like I have a shtarke shayches to him somehow. The most famous of his brothers in law was probably the MaHaRaM Brisk of Tosnad, who also was murdered during WW2.

Mr. Fisher I did see often, since I learned there for a lengthy period of time, but I never did say two words to him or hear from him anything for that matter. He was chosen as the SIL of the Old Mattersdorfer Rov and worked for his institutions for over 60 years, working way past what you'd consider normal age. He insisted on being called "Mister," and he was granted that sincere by generations of YCS alumni. Based on his Shver choosing fine Talmidei Chachomim as husbands for his daughters I can safely assume that he too was a fine Talmid Chochom, but he never occupied positions like his BILs did. Some of them include Rav Binyomin Paller z"l, famed Talmid of the Griz of Brisk and Rosh Yeshivas Mekor Chaim, YBLCH"T Reb Simcha Shustal of Stamford, Rabbi Kagan from Denver, and Rabbi Cohen ZG"Z. His son Reb Dovid, a Maggid Shiur and Rosh Kolel in Ch'san Sofer for many years was married to the daughter of the Margaretener Rov z"l, so that he and his wife lost their fathers within a few short days. That must be tough on all involved, especially the grandkids. I wish I knew more and could write more about the Niftar, but I don't. I invite all of you who may know more, and I know there are YCS alumni who read this blog, to contribute whatever information they have about Mr. Fisher in the comments section.

Yehi Zichrom Boruch.

(Most of the biographical info about the Margaretener Rov was taken from "עולמי" , a memorial book of the Kehillos of Szeplak and Margareten; and history of the MaHaRYATZ and his descendants, compiled by Reb Ahron Hersh Ayalon (Weinberger) and published in Tammuz of 5758.)

Conflicts, Conflicts

There's this website that's dedicated to "explaining" to the Dati-LeUmi world the errs of their ways when it comes to the State and Zionism. So they quote all kinds of Rabbonim and Gedolim who made all kinds of statements, basically trying to scare them into abandoning what they've been taught. It's a commendable idea, one that the Rebbe was basically for. He often said that believing that the State is Aschalta DeGeulah is MeAkev the Geulah, so discouraging belief is a good thing. In my Google search on 20 Kislev, the Yohrtzeit of the last Pachad Yitzchok (not the Boyaner) I came across the following site that has quotes from him about the State, although he considered himself a Talmid and MeKabel of Harav Kook, (Actually, he tried to cover it up....) and I doubt there was a whole lot of kano'us going at YRCB in those years. In any case here's what they bring:

Free Translation: When Moron the Pachad Yitzchok (Rav Y Hutner - HT) read about the Rabbonim and Dayonim of the Chief (secular??) Rabbinate needing to swear allegiance to the State he said: "Believe me; when I read about it this morning I cried like an infant. What kind of "Onshikinesh" is this? Whoever heard of a Rov or Dayan swearing allegiance to anything but the Shulchan Aruch? This is nothing but a cheap immitation of the Anglo-Saxon declaration, where a Government minister swears allegiance when he gets elected." (Sefer HaZikaron LeMoron HaPachad Yitzchok pg 43)

A fair statement, but I'm not quite sure how that's supposed to dissuade a sworn Mizrachi guy from abandoning his beliefs. Anyway, on one of my browsing sessions I came across some interesting photos of just such a ceremony, where the Rabbonim and Dayonim swore allegiance to the State in a ceremony presided over by President Zalman Shazar. Of course we have the usual "suspects," such as Rav Ovadia Yosef, but we also have unusual suspects, who I guess didn't think it was such an "Onshikinesh" after all. We always knew that he sat on the "Secular" Chief Rabbinate but we never thought of it in the context of swearing allegiance to the State of Israel, we thought he was doing a job, no more. But now it all takes on a whole different perspective, he was defying not only the Brisker Rov all those years, and the Brisker - true to form - still haven't forgiven him no matter what the rest of the Yeshivishers say, but also the Pachad Yitzchok. We also know that although he eventually resigned from the Rabbinate after the issue with Rabbi Goren being Mattir the Mamzerim, he never thought twice when swearing allegiance. So the next time you see Reb Aron Schechter visit Rav Elyashiv ask him how he visits the man who defied the man he succeeded.

Matisyahu Express - Next stop: Karlin

So it seems like Matisyahu, the great White/Jewish hope, has left Chabad and joined Karlin. He's not sure yet which Karlin, whether Pinsk or Stolin, but one of them. Don't get me wrong here, I wish him well and all the luck in the world, but there's seems to be a lack of appreciation on his part, as is often the case. Also, if you ask me I'd say that this seems to be a pattern with him, not liking his surroundings after a while and looking for something new. One line in particular seems to sum it all up for me: "At first it was very exciting to me, but after learning it for hours a day for two years, the ideas weren’t fresh anymore." He seems to quickly run out of patience, and gets tired of doing the same thing over and over again. Then again maybe he'll become a righteous Karliner and settle down. Right.

You'll surely chalk this one up to me being oversensitive, but it sure seems like Matty's a little bit of an ingrate, not appreciating what was done for him in Chabad, both in the Yeshivos he learned in, and in the Shlichus Network. Getting free PR, albeit Chabad benefitted too, sure didn't hurt in his career. One thing's for certain, there's no way in heck that the Karliner, especially the more "old-style" Pinsker, will allow for him to continue "beatboxing" in clubs while becoming one of them, especially since he announced to the world that he belongs there now. For some reason some Lubavitchers were happy to have him as their own, and allowed for that genre to become popular even amongst their own children. Now that he's introduced that to Lubavitcher kids and taught them that it was cool to be frum and Bob Marley at the same time let him peddle his wares elsewhere, and let's see the kind of reception he gets there. Something tells it won't be pretty in Karlin. Then again, I could be wrong again.

Conniptions and Cosmopolitan on Coney

Yehupitz commenting on When Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin celebrated 100 years ------- The reason R Schechter and R Hutner refused the hazmono is that they were not goires R'Moshe. Something unknown to the world at large (because the Satmar Rov became the public face of the dispute) is that when R'Moshe issued the Artificial Insemination Teshuva, R'Hutner wrote him off as a godol and was not goires him. At Ner Israel, there was a private mesora that once when R'Ruderman and R'Hutner were sitting next to one another before a meeting, R'Moshe walked into the room and R'Ruderman was starting to rise when R'Hutner pushed hard on his seatmate's leg to stop him from rising. It would make more sense to state that R Schechter could not get onto the Moetzes until R'Moshe, whose Beis-Din he defied, was niftar. To understand R'Hutner's views on his rights as a Rosh Yeshiva, one would have to wait for a history of the Beis Hatalmud Yeshiva in Israel he led briefly with R'Schwartzman the ex-son-in-law of R Aharon Kotler. An Ashkenazi admirer says: Rav Hutner z"l was feisty and made many enemies among both chaveirim/peers and talmidim. Harabbonim Shurkin, Cantor, Kleinkaufman, Shvartzman just to name a few. IMO the touchy-feely model for G'dolim (e.g. Rav Pam z"l) is not the only one that is valid. Rav Hutner's alienation of some do not diminish his stature in my eyes any more than do similar alienations by the Rambam, the Kotzker and the Satmar or, for that matter the Ba'al Shem or the Ba'al HaTanya do. Different shorshei neshoma, I guess. As a matter of fact several years after moving to EY but back for a Yom Tov in America Rav Hutner was asked if he would be keeping Yom Tov Sheyni and quipped "lu mir nuhr zehn, ikh hob ah voinung in EY un ah voinung in America, ikh hob talmidim in EY un talmidim in America, ikh hob SONIM in EY un SONIM in America. Altz vuss ah mentsh darf hubin hub ikh in baida pletzer, verrt es guhr ah shvereh shaila.... Mashgiach woes at Chaim Berlin adds: Rav Shlomo Carlebach was the Mashgiach Ruchani for about 12 years, but when Rav Hutner and his son-in-law went to settle in Yerushalayim to build their new "Pachad Yitzchok" Yeshiva, they left Chaim Berlim Yeshiva in the hands of R. Aaron Schechter as the Rosh Yeshiva and Avrohom Fruchthandler as the President. Rav Carlebach was put in the tough situation of being forced to work UNDER Rav Schechter as mashgiach but he refused to be an "eved knani" to Reb Aaron. Rav Hutner asked him if he would be prepared to be an "eved knani" under Rav Aaron and he told Rav Hutner (b'zeh haloshen:) "I ain't no eved knani" --- so they told bachurim not to go to his chumash chaburas, then they told him to leave, and when he refused they took out his chair, table and shtender. He took them to a Din Torah by Rav Moshe Feinstein and they refused to go. The rest is history. Since then, Rav Carlebach has written five machshove seforim that are called "Maskil Lishlomo" on what he calls "Emunos VeDeios" in beautiful loshen kodesh. In style and content they are almost identical to Rav Hutner's Pachad Yitzchok seforim. The intensity of the machlokes is still known by many people and there is still no sholem. It is assur to mention Rav Carlebach's name in the Yeshiva Chaim Berlin. When Rav Shimon Groner passed away after struggling for 25 years as Mashgiach Ruchani, Rav Shechter appointed his oldest son, Rav Mordechai Zelig Shechter as the new mashgiach ruchani of Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin. Rav Yonasan David is still in Yerushalayim, but he comes to Chaim Berlin, where he sits in the front with Rav Shechter and they both say the Ma'amorim with Rav Hutner's Toyra on Pesach and Sukkos.... I believe it was Henry Ford who said "show me a man who's never made an enemy and I'll show you a man who's never made anything."

Became a BT at 12 years old, a Skverrer a few years later, yet very much continued on the path of acquiring more and more secular knowledge. I always thought that you couldn't do that in Neu Skver. He continues to spend much time in MO circles and even coaches MO Hockey! Yes, appearances can be deceiving, and the fact that he squooshes his Peyos and wears old-fashioned glasses like a Skverrer Chossid doesn't say all that much, but it does show that he wants to look like one of them, which is something after all, considering how much time he spends away from Skver. The video presented here really doesn't do justice to Reb Mayer, being that the host of this (public access?) TV program is a total dufus and doesn't let the man get a word in edgewise, and goes off on long tangents every time he pleases. Yet, we can still get a good glimpse into what makes him tick. I just can't get over the fact that he lives in and speaks for Skver.....

Stick with us and you'll find true peace

[An email exchange sent to me recently, where a "Chareidi" and a Talmid on the edge of the Chareidi world have an exchange of words. The Chareidi explains to the Talmid the concept of Daas Torah, who has it and who doesn't, and why it needs to be this way: He uses a letter from Reb Elchonon Wasserman HaYad to bolster his claim. (And, please folks, don't lose your sense of humor, OK?]

R' Elchonon Wasserman HY"D wrote: All Torah leaders have Daas Torah to a certain degree. Some have 50%, others 25%, etc, while the rest of the person's mind is not Daas Torah – it is perhaps business daas or other people's opinions or some other type of understanding. Pure Daas Torah is only found amongst Gedolei Torah who have cast off the transient vanities of this world and are loyal exclusively to the Torah perspective .

(Kovetz Mamarim)

Talmid asks: Fine, so does "Daas Torah" include opposite de'ahs?

Chareidi: But of course!

Talmid: That's what I say -- So let them allow for other De'ahs to be heard!

Chareidi: Too risky; you must know by now the dangers of allowing people to think for themselves - they will have too many options and we cannot tell where this may lead. The very definition of Judaism could be lost in the sea of possibilities... who would gain from that? No, it is best if people just stay within our stated terms and all will be well - there is nothing to gain from diversity of thought other than confusion and pain. Really, it's for the best - if the masses would understand this they would thank us for it.

So ends this exchange between the Chareidi and the Talmid.

A short time later, the Talmid sends another email to the Chareidi:

Dear Rabbi,
I am feeling calmer already. Thanks to your wonderful advice, I have realized that I never enjoyed thinking for myself anyway. It was just something that my parents, who were modern Jews, wanted me to do so that they would feel that they succeeded in raising what they narrow-mindedly considered a healthy, well-rounded, existentially-focused and creative child. They had no idea how stressful this could be for someone who was more inclined to blind conformism and the incomparable pleasures of couch-potatohood.

With deep gratitude,
Your Talmid.

The Chareidi's response comes quickly.

Dear Talmid:
We appreciate your frankness, and we would like to point out that these were, no doubt, secular ideas that your esteemed Jewish parents had adopted, that caused them to feel the desire to influence you to think out out of the box. It is disconcerting that you still (even now) may associate this with their being Jewish - I assure you that had they been protected from foreign influences they would not have done this. We understand that many of our parents had to deal with many struggles - they were turbulent times - but it is our sincere hope that we can eliminate this attitude and at the very least save the future generations, even if some of the past generations were unfortunately harmed. We cannot stress the advantages of staying in line with our mainstream positions. Stick with us and you will find true peace. We wouldn't tell you this if we didn't really care.

Rabbi ______,
Agudas Gedolei Olam For A Better Tomorrow

But the Talmid has another dilemma:

Rabbi, I'm so mechubad that you deigned to answer me about my search for inner peace. I've just renewed my prescription to the Chareidi Observer and plan to stick to you like a fly to fly-paper from now on. BTW I have a Halachic she'eiloh: do you think it would be ba'al tashchis to destroy all the grass that grows between the cracks in the sidewalk in my neighborhood? It looks so antinomian and unaesthetic...

Chareidi:
We are pleased with your progress. Hashem is with you. And don't worry, we're the good guys; you're on the right team now. As to your shayloh: Removing the grass is not halachically problematic, but it's beneath the dignity of the Jewish people to take part in the removal. Therefore, a goy should be rented for this practice.

Talmid: Rabbi, I knew that Hashem created Goyim for a reason! I just don't get why He created grass...

Chareidi:
To keep Goyim & animals busy of course!

Convention News?

Can anybody fill us in Vos S'hut zich Geredt by the Convention this weekend? Please don't tell me that there was a Protest held by the NK. I read YeshivaWorld too, believe it or not.

I think the idea of putting Yerushalayim as a theme this year is hilarious, really. Since when was that ever an issue in Agudah circles? That was usually left for the Dati-LeUmi and Lubavitch crowds. I guess when your influence in the Frum crowd dwindles like that, and you need to drop down a notch and go for the modern, then their agendas also need to be discussed.

Impostors, all of them!

(Reb Lazer Hager of Vizhnitz zt"l on the left)

Reb Yissocher Shlomo Teichtel recalls what a Lithuanian Rov once told him:

This Rov from Kovno Slabodka was at the Kenessiah Gedolah and Marienbad and wasn't happy with what he saw there. He "realized" that all these Hungarian Rabbonim were was a bunch of impostors wearing Rabbinic garb but not talking the talk. They wore wide-brimmed hats and silver-tipped canes, but had no Torah to go with it. They were haughty fellows those Magyars and had nothing to back it up. Whereas the Lithuanian Rabbonim were all humble and scholars and didn't wear the garb. Why, even Reb Chaim Ozer of Vilna, the leader of World Jewry wears the garb of a simple Jew! I saw one who had a large entourage with him - says the Rov - and I told myself that I'd observe them and see what their level of Torah knowledge is. I asked some of the people with him and they knew nothing of what I asked, then I asked the Rov a question in the Rambam and he too had no answer for me!

Was it fair for him to base his opinion of all Hungarian Rabbonim on one chance encounter he had at a resort area? Did he at all know whom he was engaging in that Shmuess? Wasn't he a bit quick to judge?

(Reb E.C. Althaus HaYaD)

a diary written by Reb Eli Chaim Althaus HaYaD, a Mekurev to Bais HoRav and the Rebbe's Shadchan, about the wedding of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin on 14 Kislev 5689 in Warsaw.

[= נהייתי שמח מאד].

When Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin celebrated 100 years -------

(Reb A.M. Shechter)

------- They forgot about one guy

It's quite a book, by the way, a "coffee table" thing with a boatload of history, and some fascinating pictures too, but for some reason they couldn't remember that he had spent 15 years under their employment. They have names and pictures of Rebbes, Melamdim and Teachers going back to the teens and 20's. They have newspaper articles from that same time period heralding all kinds of events and stories about the Yeshivah, but no mention of him. They mention the secular studies teachers, principals, the food providers and the fundraisers, but no mention of him. As far as the current leadership is concerned, and as far as the annals of history tell the story, He never as much as spent one day there. Why was he Zoycheh to such treatment?

Reb Shlomo shlit"a ben Reb Yosef Tzvi HaYa"d Carlebach. He was quite a personality from what I understand, a prime disciple of the late Rabbi Isaac Hutner from the very early days, and a man that spent many years there, but he never made it to the book that celebrated its long history. He incurred their wrath forever, and was deleted forever. Let's examine this further, shall we?

According to the Wiki article he had a falling out with the Hanholas HaYeshivah when Rabbi Hutner left to Eretz Yisroel to build a Yeshivah there. He was seemingly promised the position of Mashgiach Ruchni and figured that now was the time for the promise to be fulfilled. But Reb Aron Shechter and his SIL Reb Yonason David would have none of that, they made it known that he was no longer welcome in the hallowed halls of The "Gur Aryeh Institute." So Reb Shlomo went and did what many of us would do, he called the current Moetzes Member to a Din Torah, and not just anywhere, but to the Agudas HaRabbonim, then under the leadership of HaRav Moshe Feinstein z"l.

Some people do see themselves as being above the law, believe it or not, and the YRCB clan was from those people. The term used in Wiki is quite cute; "Rabbi Carlebach attempted to bring the termination of his employment and the manner in which it was done to adjudication with various batei din ("Jewish religious courts") but Rabbi Hutner maintained that he was not subject to such proceedings in this instance." In other words, Nisht em meint men. Yes, some people need to listen to Hazmonos, and especially when they're called to DT by the Godol HaDor, but not them. So Reb Shlomo found himself without a job, and to his credit never took it to the secular courts, like they do today at the Yeshivah on the hill in Ir HaTeyreh Bene Beraq. Nobody - I guess - saw anything wrong with ignoring Hazmonos to DT, and one of them is even considered to have Daas Torah by the late Reb Moshe Sherer, an alumnus of YRCB, who rewarded him by putting him on the Moetzes. And so, my friends, that in a nutshell is the story of Reb Shlomo the Rabbi and not the musician, a man who like Al Gore, came oh-so-close to being the next Mashgiach of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin. In his place was put the late Reb Shimon Groner, cousin of Leibel, a grandson of the Alter and Mitteler Rebbes, but a Misnaged vi in posuk shteit.

(The Rebbe around the time of his wedding)

Col

I think that even those of you who may not have the best of feelings towards the Rebbe can understand the emotion that's associated with the the revealing of a picture like this. Imagine for a moment that you had a Zeide who you knew only in his old age, and of whom you never saw a picture of when he was young, I would think you'd have your breath taken away when being a shown a picture of him dressed in his Shabbos finery. Although there are some pictures of the Rebbe in that T'kufah still I was overcome with emotion upon seeing it.

Warped Judaism

In conjunction with (actually mostly by) Chabakuk Elisha:

I realize, based on my post reacting to contemporary Jewish publications that I'm probably in the minority – but when Hirshel sent me the link to THIS book I almost fell off my chair. I'm sorry, but there is something fundamentally unspiritual about an approach which covers up all divine mystery and human spontaneity like a cement truck.

I don't know the Rabbi that wrote it, but really, books like these are what reinforce the notion that there are more than small differences between the different strains of Yiddishkeit, and these folks and I are just different. The idea of the book, namely appreciating the mundane day-to-day activities and seeing them as Mitzvos, isn't the problem. That's fine – even laudable. But the latter part is what drives me insane. Is this a joke? My G-d! The idea that we're building a portfolio for the world to come is nothing less than the death of the soul of Yiddishkeit. And while I guess that's fine if you're not into soul; but for Jews that ARE into soul, books like these are like a stake into our hearts. It's such a completely different message, such a completely different Judaism, such a completely different purpose of life! And it's one that runs directly counter to the work of the great Tzaddikim who worked so tirelessly to insure that Yiddishkeit remain a body WITH a soul!

At first the book looks like a very good and helpful tool. He brings the Sefer HoIkkarim that says that one Mitzvah with Kavonoh is more than a multitude of ones done without, and that just thinking beforehand that we're about to do a Mitzvah greatly increases the amount of Mitzvos you do properly. Were he to end there, this book would be a welcome addition to anybody's library; but once he starts with the "Airline Miles" he loses me, and I'm sure many others as well. He reassures the reader that doing Mitzvos for reward is "no sin," it's just that "Serving without expectation of reward is simply more exalted." The author understands that many of us are hesitant to embark on this reward program, and that they've never heard of doing Mitzvos for reward only, but he reassures us all: "If I promised someone a billion dollars for shining my shoes, for example, he might be skeptical, even if I proved that I was serious. A billion dollars is just too good to be true! For people who cannot comprehend the rewards of the World to Come, it might help to contemplate the more immediate, and therefore more believable, benefits of performing mitzvos consciously."

I understand the concept of mitoch shelo leshmoh bah leshmah. But emphasizing the shelo lishma? Isn't that a bit much? Is that even Judaism? I really don't know. I don't know who is attracted to such Judaism, but I'm willing to admit that some may be. Is our focus supposed to be on the rewards package after checking out of here after 120 years? This entire premise just pushed all my buttons – am I a child that I must be tricked into being a good boy? Is Yiddishkeit some kind of a game all about collecting the most brownie points? I think that reward gets too much airplay. I can just see it, "Well maybe I should smile at this old woman and say hello after all, you know I will have more of a reward in Olam Haboh, so it really is in MY best interest to do it." I think that all this emphasis on Olam Haboh has become confused. Friends, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is not what it's all about – not even close. Sometimes, we shake that carrot in front of our more base elements when absolutely necessary, but if we focus on it too much we become anything but an Am Kadosh. Anything but a G-dly people. Let's take the concept of mesirus nefesh. Now, generally speaking, this is not an exclusively Jewish concept – in fact, some of our best enemies are really into their form of it, They're also known as "homicide bombers". In fact the reason for this warped idea is specifically because those folks live in this paradigm of the "he who has the most points at the end of the game wins." But Yiddishkeit is not really a "next-world" religion, farkert – we're a "this world" religion, and our purpose is simple: "laasos lo Yisborech diroh bitachtonim." That's the goal, not what we've got in store behind door number two.
