His Finest Hour

I wish I could find a better picture, meaning not one that appeared on the cover of the Artscroll version of his life, but that's what Google offered, so there. (What little I know about Yonason Rosenblum, that is from reading his articles, I can't believe he was the best candidate to write THE BOOK about Rav Dessler). The revision that they have done to so many Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshivah are probably some of the greatest literary crimes committed since the fall of the Soviet Union.

In the case of HaRav Dessler, I can say this much : While learning in a non-Lubavitch Yehivah, the Maggid Shiur, may he be well, learned Michtav Me'Eliyahu with us every day, reading from the Sefer while we listened. That was no conincidence. He was not what you'd call a "Misnaged" but rather a Talmid of Beis Medrish Elyon in it's early years, who appreciated all Erliche Yidden, and Tanya and Chabad were part of that. Rumor has it when the venerable Mashgiach "Reb Chatzkel", (Chatzkel Warshaver) came to Ponovezh after Rav Dessler's untimely passing, he commented: "It'll take years to "undo" the Churban that he did to the Yeshivah". That's right, to the radical Mussarites, anyone who even "noshed" from Chassidus was bad, even a grandson of the Salanter.

Some of you may know by now, that in 5713, a year before his passing, Rav Dessler began to work on organizing a Yeshivah that was not heard of until then. Namely, a Yeshivah that would combine the Liyvishe style of learning with the Chassidic style of everything else. A Rosh Yeshivah was found, HaRav Gedalia Hertz of Yeshivas Chidushei HaRim in Tel Aviv, but it went no further. Before it could be started HaRav Dessler passed away, and with him died his dream. Today there are Yeshivas that claim to have that combination, but without a true Litvishe Mashgiach like RD their claims are worthless.

There is much more to write, but now is not the time. Maybe for the Yohrtzeit in Teves.

What brought HaRav Dessler to mind was the fact that today was the Yohrtzeit of Reb Yitzchok (Itche Der Masmid) Gurevitz , who was burned al Kiddush Hashem together with Reb Chatshe Feigin and Reb Eli Chaim Althaus in Riga in 5702 (hy"d). These were the Chassidim closest to the Rebbe. They had the necessary papers arranged by the Rebbe in New York, but the Nazis had already entered Riga and no one could leave.

His son-in-law HaRav Geldzahler in his sefer "Kodshei Yehoshua" recounts how Reb Itche was the Dessler's guest in England in the '30s when Reb Itche was there to collect money for Yidden in the Soviet Union. He spent every available minute with Reb Itche and called those days הימים הכי מאושרים בחיי (his most pleasing days) He never stopped speaking about those days. This from a Yid who saw all the Litvishe "greats", and was a descendant of Rav Yisroel Lipkin of Salant. Tells you something about Chassidus, Rav Dessler, and Reb Itche.

Even more so it tells you about how some of us have become so square and boxed in.

Not a bad post,IF,you had left your Chabasker hubris out of it.
Can't you just focus on the positive, in your eyes at least,of Rabbi Dessler being open to Chabad ideas and incorporating some of them in his sefer?Instead you attach ehrlicheh yidden.
To give you some of your own medicine:I was reminded of a missionary poster I once saw regarding the Rebbe and moshiach:Right idea, wrong man

Interesting post. I would like to respond to some of what you wrote :

1) Yonoson Rosenblum is very talented and intelligent and I think he does generally does a good job with things he undertakes (I think he wrote 'Reb Yaakov' too and did a very good job). Who did you want to wtite the book instead ? Presumably he was asked to do it and no one else was doing it. Did you want to wait another fifty years till someone might sit down and do it ?

2) The book does mention Lubavitch. As I recall it says that Desslers davened in a Lubavitch minyan at one time when REED was young, as another local minyan had communists or the like there. Perhaps there is more too, but it's been a while since I read it.

3) You say that Rav Chatzkel was radical and imply REED was mainstream. I think it's the reverse. Rav Dessler's adoption of Lubavitch things was an exception among mashgichim and mussarites, not the rule.

4) I wonder which non-Lubavitch Yeshivah you learned Michtav Me'eliyohu at.

5) Re REED allegedly organizing a Yeshiva that "would combine the Liyvishe style of learning with the Chassidic style of everything else" - a) what is your source for that, b) what is meant by 'everything else' ? What nusach would they daven ? Lubavitch ? Ger? Munkatch ? Would they wear gartlech ? Would they learn all Lubavitch works ? Would they daven within zemanei tefilloh and krias shema ?

You say he was niftar before he could bring this alleged dream to fruition. If so, some might say that he was held back from shomayim from doing that.

6) Just because REED was a grandson of Rav Yisroel Salanter zt"l, doesn't mean that that his famous zeide would have agreed with everything he did - esp. if his zeide was niftar before he was born (or when he was very young). By that logic, you could say that Rav Dessler was for chagas Chassidus, since his grandson and namesake, REE Geldzahler, who was niftar about a year ago, was a Chossid (not Lubavitch).

7) It's true that some Litvaks were closer to Lubavitch in the past. At one time in Telshe Yeshiva they even learned Tanya birabbim (a long time ago) - but they don't do that now. Rav Dessler and Itche der masmid related to each other as two great talmidei chachomim, one to another. If REED would have met just any Lubavitcher, do you think he would have said the same thing about spending time with them ? Evidently Itche der masmid was not just any Lubavitcher - rather a mitzuyon shebimitzuyonim.

8) Anyway, as I stated above, there were (and still are some) cases of Litvishe still looking at Lubavitch writings (esp. works from way back, like those of the AR and TT, less so more recent works, I would say, generally speaking), and I agree that it's good not to be boxed in too much (as an aside, if you're criticizing being boxed in, you could criticize many Lubavitchers on that count as well). However, this has become more rare and less open as Lubavitch has changed alot and become much more agressive in trying to convert people to become Lubavitchers, believe the Rebbe is nosi hador, Moshiach, etc., and succeeding in some cases, R"L. Naturally, this has made Litvaks more wary of them. Some Litvaks which previously were duped by Lubavitch 'friendliness'(like that of some other missionaries), woke up and smelled the coffee, after they saw some of the conversions that took place. So they instituted harchokos from Lubavitch to try to prevent such things.

I thank you for taking the time to write, and I'll try to reply

1) I do not doubt his credentials as an intelligent man. I just think that someone more knowledgeable would've been more appropriate.

2) Just mentioning that he davened there, although nice, doesn't exempt them from writing about life's decisions he made later on in his adult life.

3) What I meant by radical re: Reb Chatzkel was that they were radical in regards to their approach to Chassidus, and that only Mussar be allowed to be taught. Not that they were not the norm. They were the norm, REED was not.

4) If you need to know I'll tell you, but do you doubt me?

5) a) Proof re: the Yeshivah are copies of letters he exchanged with RGH that were printed in היכל הבעש"ט approx. 2 years ago. b) by everything else I would presume the whole Ruach of the Yeshivah, the details of the Nusach HaTfilah etc. are unknown to me. You can believe he was held up MiShomayim, but that doesn't change the fact that he wished to do it.

6) True, his zeide wouldn't have agreed with him, but so what? The point is the family he came from, the irony of it, sort of like a Schneerson becoming a Litvak. He would've been a hybrid Chossid, with the emphasis on Chabad. His grandson was "heavy" into Chabad, and would attend the Rebbe's farbrengens regularly, from what I've heard from his CLOSE friends, but that's besides the point.

7) I guess to connect with a mind like REED's you needed a Mitzuyon to relay the messages.

8) I doubt their intentions are as noble as you make them out to be.

I choose not to address the parts of your post that resemble dribble.

Get out of your caves and look around you.

Don't you people understand that there is an entire world of jews that arent chabatzkers??

Do you realize that chabad makes only a small portion of all other jews?
Do you realize that for example BELZ or GER (just examples) are bigger then Chabd?
HELLO? ANYONE HOME?

I already know your answer...yeah yeah the same one that all lubabs say. It goes like this:
If you ever get stuck in New Zealand for Shabbos we have a Chabad house ther. Yeah yeah, they can give you slippers for T'sha B'av if you get stuck in any "cockamainy" place in the world.

YIPPY-DOO!!! HOORAY!!!

Tzig - Yasher kayach far di entfer.

In response to what you wrote above,

1) Maybe R. Yaynoson Rosenblum didn't know about some of the things you are complaining about. He is not from an FFB background and the letters in Heichal, according what you write, were only published after his book came out.

2) " If you need to know I'll tell you, but do you doubt me?". I don't doubt you, I know that you aren't a LFB (Lubavitcher from birth), but was just curious anyway.

3) "I choose not to address the parts of your post that resemble dribble." - ich bin nisht a basketball shpiler !

4)I would also like to take the opportunity here to expand on something that was touched upon - namely, that there were certain periods of 'detente' between the Litvishe and Lubavitcher velten, while other periods were otherwise, either resembling 'cold war', or worse.

Additionally, the periods of detente may have been more prevalent in some places than others. As an example, the Lita that REED came from was Zamut, (northern Lithuania, the present state of Lithuania). There were basically no Chassidim there, I believe (as opposed to another part of Lita, namely White Russia, where there was a significant Chassidic presence). I think the fact that there were no Chassidim up there, may have made or contributed to a more open atmosphere there (like some parts of America outside large frum areas today), so you had people like REED and some people at Telshe looking into Tanya. They could look at them as part of intellectual/spritual exploration, without worrying too much about such being perceived as defection to another group.

Back to my main point - there were periods of detente and periods of more conflict. Periods of detente were, let's say, from the time of the TT to some time afterward. While there were open tensions under the sixth Rebbe, under the seventh Rebbe tensions returned to the highest point since the beginning of the movement. Perhaps an expert like Kurenitzer could give a detailed rating and analysis of relations between the Litvishe velt and Lubavitch under each of the Rebbes. I will content myself with the generalities above.

Well, maybe he held that that wasn't the true mussar derech and he wanted to go back to the old way.

By the way, you're referring to him as (Chatzkel Warshaver) reminded me (since Varshe wasn't a Litvishe town, even if there were some Litvishe spots there) that, as I recall, he was at least partially, maybe even fully, ver veist, of Chassidic background - I think Ger/Kotzk. Actually I think there are siginificant similarities between the derochim of Kotzk/Ger and certain mussar derochim, so it's not such a big jump in some ways. Reb Chatzkel iz nisht geven an MFB (Misnaged from birth).

"the fact that they lived 100 miles north may not have had that much of an impact."

100 miles then meant more than now. There were no cars to whisk them back and forth.

"re: YRosenblum: Why then have him write THE BOOK on a major "player" in Litvishe life?"

See http://www.artscroll.com/Authors/Yonason_Rosenblum.html

If he wrote Reb Yaakov, Reb Shraga Feivel and other books, why should Rav Dessler be different ?

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

I guess that amplifies the shortage of Frum Jewish writers who write in English.

you're right about 100 miles being much more, but I don't know if you're correct in your assumption that there were no Chassidim there.

re: Reb Chatzkel; that's exactly my point, that he was NOT a MFB. Mussar and Kotzk are not similar, not by any stretch of the imagination.

REED was a descendant of RYS and a talmid of the Talmud Torah in Kelm (I believe so?) so who had the mesorah as far as Mussar goes?

Anonymous said...

"Mussar and Kotzk are not similar, not by any stretch of the imagination."

They are similar in both stressing introspection, anovo, and strong striving for emes.

"REED was a descendant of RYS and a talmid of the Talmud Torah in Kelm (I believe so?) so who had the mesorah as far as Mussar goes?"

I will remind you of a Chassidic story somewhat similar to this.

R. Boruch of Mezhibozh, einikel of the BESHT, argued strongly with the Alter Rebbe, saying that the AR's derech was not the way of his zeide. The AR responded along the lines of 'you may be an einikel, but I am a talmid'.

The same here. An einikel (esp. if he never knew and maybe never even saw the zeide) isn't necessarily going in his zeide's derech.

If you always hold by the einikel you should hold by R. Boruch of Mezhobozh and R. Bere (Barry) Gurary, rather then the AR and 7th Rebbes.

Correction - I think it was more like this - the AR to R. Boruch : you may be the biological yoreish, but I am the spiritual yoreish.

Since you guys spoke so nicely now, I will be michabeid you with another comment. ;-)

At one time, 'mussarnik'es' were referred to (among Litvaks/non-Chassidim/misnagdim) as the 'Chassidei Zamut'. Maybe that can be somewhat connected to the fact that there were basically no other Chassidim up there, though it could stand even without such a connection.

By the way, do any of you guys ever read writings by Hirshe-Dovid Katz in the Algemeiner Journal and elsewhere ? He has some interesting stuff out there.

Breslov - yasher kayach for that post.

So where did R. Nachman stand in this conflict between R. Boruch and the AR ? Basically with the AR ? In the middle ?

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

C

don't know about that, but with Breslov one thing irks me. It seems like there is no Baal Shem Tov in the Breslover lexicon. What I mean is that there's Reb Nachman, who was the Besht's grandson, but they don't see it as part of "Toras HaBesh"t", there is only Rabbeinu, בבחינת אין עוד מלבדו. Am I wrong?

Anonymous said...

HT - ich veis nisht, maybe Breslover can respond, or maybe Kurenitzer.

Kurenitzer, where art thou ?? Maybe he is busy. Hopefully, he will stop by soon and be mihaneh us with his choshuve hagohos and maamorim.

Anonymous said...

HT, I know what you mean, but it's not really so simple - I do think that the Baal Shem Tov is quoted often in Likkutei Mohoran.
But remember, Reb Nachman was a great-grandson (Besh"t, Adel, Feiga, R' Nachman) - so, he is of a later generation.
R' Nachman is considered in Breslov to be higher than the Besh"t - so what? Yaakov is higher than Avrohom Avinu...
I don't see why this bothers you so much...

And remember, R'Baruch was cholek with Reb nachman as well, so he was quite sympathetic to the AR's plight. Also, The AR and R' Nachman did dispay a warm friendship, for which there are many examples.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

CE

I guess what I mean is not that Reb Nachman is considered greater than his Zeide. I would think, however, that since the Besh"t was the founder of Chassidus that there would be more of an emphasis on the Besht.

Case in point: Toras Chabad is very different than Chagas, but it's that way because the AR said that he took the inner essence of the Toras HaBesht. In Breslov I don't see that they say that, it's just that we do it our way, because.

In response to those who didn't like my comments and think I'm a misnagid and a chabad hater:

First of all I know the Shulchon Aruch Horav better then you (and I'm not lubavitch) and I follow what it says there.
Example: I say Krias Shema before the Zman. Do you? Does 770 on Shabbos morning? No the don't. Know how I know? Because I was there at the 10:00 or 10:30 Minyan. (I got sooooooooo sick that I davened upstairs at the "Rebbas" minyan.
Now, do you listen to what the Shulchon Aruch Horav says about Z'man Krias Shema?
Well go check.
I also learned the ENTIRE Tanya more then once. I don't have time to learn it anymore since I learn more Halacha and Gemora in my daily Sedorim.

AND I know 100's if not 1000's of chasidisha stories from the "Alter Rebbe" to the" Mittele Rebbe" to the "Tzemach Tzedek" to the "Rogachover" to regular choshava chassidim such as "R' Mendle Futterfast" and "R' Issac Humler".

So dont make it sound that I'm an Agudah shmuck.

I'M NOONE. I'M NOT A CHOSID , NOT A MISNAGID, JUST A JEW!!

There once was a person who asked the Chofetz Chaim "are you a chosid or a misnagid?" the Chofetz Chaim answered "when I die, they arent going to ask me if I was a chosid or a misnagid. they are going to ask me if I kept all the Mitzvos, did I learn Torah and (like the gemara says Tzipisah L'yishuah - did you await moshiach?"

So I'll repeat what I've said before: ALL CHABATZKERS GET OUT OF YOUR LITTLE CAVES AND UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A WHOLE WORLD BESIDES CHABAD.

AND YES IT ABSOLUTLY SICKENS ME TO DRIVE DOWN THE WEST SIDE HIGHWAY AND SEE A HUGE BILLBOARD WITH A PICTURE OF THE REBBE ZATZAL.
WASTING $25,000 PER MONTH ON A STUPID BILLBOARD!!! HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE STARVING AND CANT PAY BILLS, AND YOU SICKO'S GO AND WASTE THAT KIND OF MONEY!!!??

WHY NOT HANG A HUGE PICTURE OF R' AKIVA EIGER? OR THE CHASAM SOFER? OR THE ROGACHOVER? OR THE STEIPLER? OR R' MOSHE? OR THE RAMBAM? OR ANYONE ELSE?
WHY THE REBBE? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?

metz, you seem a bit confused. you abhor the waste of money spent on the Rebbe's picture, yet you seem to have no problem with the concept provided taht the sign depicts a gadol, that was so great, he even managed to persuade you he is a gadol.

Anonymous said...

No actually I dont think he was a gadol, never did never will.

I like chabbad UNTIL the rebbe.

Ever notice why the entire chabad wears "smashed down-brimed" hats? Right we all know it's cuz the rebbe did that.
But why?
all previous rebbes wore up-brimmed hats. and many chassidim wore shtreimlich etc. Then the rebbe came along......straight from graduating from a filthy college, becomes rebbe, changes the entire way that a chosid is supposed to look. Know why? cuz he was a cool guy who dressed in style and thats what the style was then. To wear a hat like bugsy segal and meyer lansky did. Do you thing that the Mahrshab whould've done that? NEVER. And dont say he would cuz if you do then your a stupid brainwashed idiot. NO OTHER REBBE IN CHABAD, OR ANY OTHER CHASISDUS IN THE WORLD WOULD'VE CHANGE THE DRESS CODE.
Could you imagine if the Satmer Rebbe or the Belzer Rebbe or the Ger Rebbe wakes up one day and says: NO MORE SHTREIMLE, NO MORE SPODIK!! They would think he was a nut.

So to answer your question, yes i think he was a Gadol. But a GADOL WHO DESTROYED CHABAD.
lOOK AT THE MONSTER HE CREATED!
BUTFACE BUTMAN AND ALL THE SICK RETARTED MISHICHITIM? A BUNCH OF SICKO'S!
OK, YOU WANNA TELL ME THAT HE'S MOSHIACH, FINE NO PROBLEM. WHEN HE WAS ALIVE YOU CAN LEARN THE RAMBAM WHO SAYS IN EVERY GENERATION THERE IS A PERSON WORTHY OF IT.

BUT HE IS DEAD!!! DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD!!

OH NOW THERE IS A NEW STORY. He still is Moshiach after he died, we fax him letters, we put up these HUGE pictures all over 770 (which looks and smells like a filthy disgusting toilet).
There is no TZURAH of a beis hamedrosh anymore. you got 65 year old men danching around with colorful yarmulkas , 65 year olds walk the streets with their tambureines, 75 year olds with moshiach pins buttoned on any piece of their being....including thier tushys.

Is this normal???

like I said before you guys ARE LIVING IN A CAVE!!!!!

WAKE UP!!!

THERE IS AN ENTIRE NORMAL WORLD OUTSIDE OF 770 THAT HAS MILLIONS OF NORMEL FRUM JEWS, BOTH CHASIDISH, LITVISH, YESHIVISH, SPHARDIK, ETC....
WE LOOK NORMAL. WE SMELL NORMAL. WE WEAR DEODERANT, WE TUCK OUR SHIRTS IN. WE WEAR NORMAL LOOKING CLOTHS, WE DON'T MAKE A CHILLUL HASHEM BY WALKING DOWN THE STREET WITH OUR SHIRTS OUT.

OH YEAH.....WHERE THE HEK DID THAT CHABAD MINHAG COME FROM?
BECAUSE YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF IT. WHAT A DISGRACE WALKING AROUND WITH YOUR SHIRTS UNTUCKED AND YOUR TZIZZIS TUCHING THE GROUND? IT LOOKS VERY NORMAL.

THE LIST GOES ON....AND ON.....AND ON....AND ON......AND ON...........

GET A LIFE DUDES. GET OUT OF YOUR CAVE. GET OUT OF THE SICK CULT THAT HAS BRAINWASHED YOU. LOOK AROUND YOU AND SEE THE OTHER NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS THAT LIVE A FRUM TORAH LIFE WITH CHASSIDUS THAT ARE .................NORMAL!

A very good blog indeed. Yasher koach. This is the open side of Chabad that could win the ball game.Just a few comments.
I think most of the mashgichim in Israel were not fans of rav Dessler, as his shitah was more machshova than Mussar.I think reb Chaskel like Reb Hutner came from a Lithuanian family. Hundreds of thousands (sic) of Litvakes lived in Warsaw and Lodz.Is the new mashgiach in Ponieviesz a son or gandson of Rav Dessler ?
Even today his Dessler's books are most popular among Seminary women and the modern orthodox community. I doubt many Yeshiva bnai Torah fartiffen zich in these seforim. Are there any tapes ?
The rav Reb Yoshe Baer supposedly also was not a fan of rav Dessler , this despite the Rav's own keen interest in Chabad thought.
Art Scroll plays down the Chabad connection. I read this book several years ago and my copy has marked places where the person who wrote it conviently forgot about Chabad.
Reb Itche Masmid. According to some, many Anash thought he could be rebbe after 1920.Obviously a fantastic Chasid and great personality . But with all due respect to my Litvishe brothers, if you are not one of them you can never gain entry to the pantheon of Gedolim !The Rogochover being the chief exception.
We see wonderful scenes of Reb Itche in the USA in the Deutsch movie about Chabad in America. He is wearing a kolpek. There is a wonderful dancing scene in this movie too.
Reb Itche supposedly said of the Imre Emes after he (the Gerer rebbe) "endorsed" the Mishneh Berura that he would ....
Speaking of a shidduch of chasiduth and Lithuanian learnign Is not that what Tora Vadaas was or still is. Are not the "Moonies" (Emunas Israel)of rav Wolfson shlit'a into the same shito. They study chassdiuth Chabad too.
It is a shame that the derech of Mr. Mendlowitz trying to bring it all together (Hirsch, Chabad, Chasam Sofer, Brisk, Mussar, Tanach, dikduk, Serious lernen, proto-Zionsim, Chagas Chassiduth
etc) never took hold.
The challenge to Chabad to write about their own gedolim in a manner to appeal to the yeshiva world.
Why not open a serious Chabad yeshiva around Lakewood with the roshe yeshiva being rabbis Yosef Yitzchak Kalmenson of NH, Shapiro of Miami and Ezra Shochet of LA and Reb Yoel as the mashpaih. Maybe rabbi Heller of CH could take the lead in this school as well.
This would be the ultimate challenge- could Chabad take on the Yeshiva world. rather than the world of ignorant American Jews (I am not knocking this task too), but I bet it could .

2) Re Emunas Yisroel - in a way, maybe they are a modern reincarnation of the malochim, no ? Another group from YTV that became very Chassidish. Now when the climate is more accepting of such, they succeeded alot more than the malochim did.

Kurenitzer:As usual a good post, I must however diasagree with this quote:'The rav Reb Yoshe Baer supposedly also was not a fan of rav Dessler , this despite the Rav's own keen interest in Chabad thought' I don't know what he thought about Rav Desslers(Bais Brisk were not part of the mussar movement)but he had no interest in Chabad theology, it is a myth propogated by Lubavitch. He had as a young boy a rebbe who impressed him who was a Lubavitcher(back in the day, when they learned a yiddish vort)I'm actually surprised that you who knows YU so well would actually think that R'Yoshe Ber could be 'soivel' such idiots, vee 'hayntigeh' Chabadskers.Someone well known for not being partial to childish tomfoolery

I also know little about the Moonies. Is Wolfson a rebbe ?

Wo! i never said he rav was a Chasid of today's Chabad.
He was the following : 1 a Close friend of the Rayatz. See the speech the rav delivered at the Lubavitcher yeshiva diner 2. An admirer of the Ramash 3. A devotee of Chabad philosophy. he called the Alter rebbe a G-D intoxicated man. He often referred to the Ater rebbe's seforim.
No where did I say he was a shliach , but a frineds of the last 2 rebbes For sure !

1) Perhaps you can give a survey of relations between the Litvishe velt and Lubavitch over the years. For convenience, it can be arranged according to the eras of what are viewed now as the 7 leaders of the main Lubavitch branch.

My guess would be that, on the whole, relations were most tense at the two extremes - when Lubavitch started, the time of the AR, and in the time of the 7th Rebbe. In the periods of the second and sixth Rebbes there also were tensions, but not as much. I assume that the times of least tension - perhaps the term detente could be used for some of this time - were the times in the middle - like Rebbes 3,4 and 5.

2) Were there any Chassidim in Zamut (other than Mussarnik'es)?

3) Any comments on Lubavitch-Breslov relations, as well as similarities and contrasts of the two groups over the years ?

4) Re the words of HT above, "Kotzk and Mussar, not unlike Chabad and Novardik, are seemingly very similar but in reality very different.", can you expound on similarities and differences of the groups mentioned.

Yasher kayach limafreia !

Kurentizer:Actually Lubavitch had actual plans on taking Lakewood on in their 'home turf'
The planned yeshiva was to have opened last Elul.R'Isser Zalman Weisberg, R'Yankels OBM son was to be Rosh Yeshiva with R'Greenwald, the Lakewood Shliach (yes,Lakewood has a Chabad house!)Mashpia. The plans were pretty grandiose, they were looking for top of the line boys who I'm very doubtful exist in Lubavitch(maybe thats the reason the yeshiva never opened, the planned curriculum seemed way above any Lubavitcher bochur I know).
R'Weisberg is a Philly Yeshiva boy, who changed course at 20 and joined Lubavitch inc.His father R'Yankel was a close talmid of R'Ahron Kotler(hence the name Isser Zalman)
They set up a website, which had some intereSting historical stuff, such as pictures of the Rayat'z visit to Lakewood in the early 40's(lakewood was a vacation spot)and a letter from R'Aharon thanking the Rayat'z for a donation iirc. You''ll have to search google for the site since I forgot the address

1)I know he endorsed learning the CC's Shmiras HaLoshon, so maybe it was באותו אופן?
2) Emunas Yisroel has few similarities to the so-called "malochim". The latter had and have extreme shitos regarding everything under the sun, including Mr. Mendlovitz, who they called a "Maskil".

Would you like to elaborate re which Yeshivas today claim to have that, and why such a setup would need a 'true Litvishe mashgiach'? You mean YTV and similar places ?

Lichayre such a scenario would require a true Litvishe RY, not a true Litvishe mashgiach, no ?

Re RIZW - I looked but couldn't find the website that they had put up for the planned Lakewood Lubavitcher Yeshive. Maybe it was taken down.

Re R. Wolfson - I think you can say that Rav Wolfson is their Rebbe, though I don't know if he does all the Rebbishe things typical of the chagas Chassidim in his area, like fihring tish regularly on Shabbes. I think he doesn't actually. I guess he is like Lubavitch in that way. I know that he doesn't wear a shtreimel, even though some of his followers do.

Many Chassidishe Yeshivos today look for Litvishe Roshei Yeshivah because they too suffer from the inferiority complex that only a "Litvisher" who learned by "Reb Berel" ken epes lernen, not to mention maggidei Shiur. You're correct that it's not the Mashgiach that's Litvish in most cases, but rather the learning part. In that sense the proposed REED Dessler Yeshivah would've been unique.

1) We (I mean the eylem bichlal, not addressing this to Lubavitchers specifically, if at all) have to recognize and appreciate that in BMG they stress Yiddish and the ikkar shiurim and shmuesen are still beikar in Yiddish as far as I know. In some other Yeshives, including some Lubavitch ones, Yiddish has declined, if not totally disappeared.

2) Back to the R. Dessler post - I would be interested to see the words from Kodshei Yehoshua inside. I wonder if the interpretation you (and/or his son-in-law) put on R. Dessler's words about the happiest time in his life is totally correct. You imply from it that he enjoyed R. Itche's company greater than that of any of the Litvishe greats he knew. But maybe he didn't mean that. Maybe he meant that time of his life bichlal was very happy, as he was not so busy as he became later, didn't have the ol of the tzibbur on him so much yet, was going up alot in ruchniyus, he was healthy, had gotten out of eastern europe, etc. Additionally. he also greatly enjoyed the company of Itche der masmid. But to compare it to his time as a kid with the Litvishe greats is not necessariy a fair comparison. When someone is young, he can't always appreciate greatness as he can later. Just a thought.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

C

Maybe, but here's my opinion:

He had left Europe as man in his 30's to 40's IIRC, and at a time when Europe was not under the dark clouds of Anti-Semitism. I do not have the sefer in front of me, and it's been a while since I've seen it, but it doesn't sound it likw it was a general statement that he was so happy anyway. It sounds like it was RIM's visit and time spent with him that brought the mood upon him.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

Rabbi Dessler’s arrival in England, however, was far from auspicious. He first came in 1928 to accompany his father Rabbi Reuven Dov Dessler for medical treatments. While in England, he decided to stay in the hope that he would be able to pay off debts that he and his father had incurred in a failed business venture. That decision led, in turn, to a separation of three years from his wife and two young children, who remained behind in Kelm.

Anonymous said...

Can we assume some Chabad connection by the fact that he was Niftar on 24 Teves, the Yohrtzeit of the Alter Rebbe?

:)

Anonymous said...

Maybe by the time Reb Itche arrived he had paid off the debt (or made substantial headway in that direction) and was reunited with his wife and young children. Would that not make him happy ? I'm not saying that Reb Itche didn't help, but you seemed to assume that Reb Itche was the only reason for his happiness, and therefore you are trying to say that Reb Itche was greater than all of the Litvishe greats REED had known, when it may have been a combination of things, and it is that that I am questioning.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

Reb C. a gutte voch

Can I know for sure that that's what he's implying? no. It seems that way from his words that he's referring to the visit that gave him the good feeling. Otherwise why mention it in tandem with the visit? But we can agree to disagreee.

Reb Itche came and showed a grown man, a man who worked on his Middos through Mussar, that there's a better way, a more elevating way, a more spiritual way - that of Chassidus. I want to believe that it was Chassidus that gave him that felling, not something as mundane as paying off debts.

Anonymous said...

"Reb Itche came and showed a grown man, a man who worked on his Middos through Mussar, that there's a better way, a more elevating way, a more spiritual way - that of Chassidus."

Wow - now you're going even further (perhaps you meant this all along, but I didn't see it). You're saying that REED saw Chassidus as a better way after meeting Reb Itche (The fact is that REED had exposure to Lubavitcher ideas long before that, by the way). So why didn't he become a Lubavitcher or a Chossid then ?

The way I interpret it is that Reb Itche was a big talmid chochom and they had good personal chemistry between them. Also the fact that REED could discuss Lubavitch ideas with RIDM helped with this rapport. Maybe he felt he couldn't discuss them, at least not on such a level, with the usual people he was around. By the way, I think, that bichlal he was starved then for Torah companionship on a high-level - a fellow talmid chochom on such a high level to talk to in England. Maybe he just enjoyed the exchange of ideas, sprinkled with some debate - like what happens on this blog sometimes. I could talk to a smart Satmar Chossid and enjoy it too, if he is friendly and acts like a mensch. Does that mean that I then hold of Satmar Chassidus and have become a closet Satmar Chossid ? Not necessarily.

Anonymous said...

It seems that you (HT) went from saying that Rav Dessler 'noshed' from Lubavitch (which I can accept), but then you want to say that he basically became a closet Lubavitcher, esp. after he met RIDM. It is the latter contention that I have a problem with.

By the way, do you know how long RIDM stayed with R. Dessler ? two weeks ? one week ? three months? Six months ? What kind of stay are we talking about ? He stayed there over Shabbos ? I assume he was travelling alot even when he stayed there.

Also, I still am not sure what "a Yeshivah that would combine the Liyvishe style of learning with the Chassidic style of everything else" means. What exactly does that mean, practically speaking ? They would have a seder in Tanya and maybe some other Chassidishe works instead of Messilas Yeshorim ?

I finally got around to seeing the letter of Rav Desller in Heichal Habesht of ניסן תּשסג. I am sorry to say, but I think there was more to it than the posting reflected. Some important things must be pointed out so people can get a more accurate picture of what Rav Dessler was proposing.

The posting stated that Rav Dessler wanted to make Yeshiva 'that would combine the Litvishe style of learning with the Chassidic style of everything else.' That is not entirely accurate. Rav Dessler proposed in the letter a Yeshiva combing the lomdus AND MUSSAR of Lita, with Lubavitch, as well as Peylisher Chassidus. So it wasn't like he wanted to dump mussar and substitute Lubavitcher Chassidus of it. Rather, it seems that he wanted to make a Tayreh Vodaas (YTV of NY) style mizug Yeshiva. This is supported by the fact that he mentions in a favorable manner that he saw such a type of institution in Monsey (where the letter was written). Evidently he was visiting his daughter and son-on-law, Rav and Rebbetzin Geldzahler and RG was a talmid of Beis Medresh Elyon there, kiyodua, which was a product of R. SF Mendelovich and the Tayreh Vodaas mizug derech he created. Evidently he wanted to create something along such lines.

Also, it should be noted that he wanted to make this Yeshiva in England for Europe.

So, sayf kol sayf, he was not advocating a quasi-Lubavitch Yeshiva, but rather a quasi-Torah Vodaas.

נאך א זאך - It says that they got the letter from a chaveir of the badatz of Crown Heights, whom they thank (p.97). So it seems quite plausible that it may have not been well-known. If the letter was laying in Crown Heights (I wonder how it got there and how long it was laying there), do you think the whole world knew about it ? Maybe it was not known, or at least not well-known, in Litvishe circles.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

C

about the letter's whereabouts. They got the letter from Rav Heller, Chaver haBadatz, but he was only a middle-man. The letter was in posession of the son-in-law of the recipient, a rabid Lubavitch-hater. He did not want to release the letter to a Lubavitcher publication, so middlemen were employed. I believe that the letter was known to exist, and RG brought it to the attention of the editors of Heichel HaBesht.

I posted from memory, and I may have forgotten about the inclusion of Mussar. However, the hanochoh you make about the yeshivah being like Teyreh VoDaas is, in my opinion, incorrect. I think he wanted more, a more serious place with more flavor.

Anonymous said...

HT - yasher kayach for the responses.

Maybe he wanted something better than Tayreh Vodaas, but I think it's clear, from reading the letter, that what he wanted was something along those lines, a fuller mix (e.g. not just Litvishe lomdus and Lubavitcher Chassidus, but Litvishe learning AND mussar and Lubavitch AND Peylisher Chassidus - that is clearly spelled out later in the letter). What he wanted was more like YTV than Taymchei Temimim. The fact that he cites approvingly that there was something along those lines in Monsey (at that time), would back this. What could he have meant by that ? There was no Lubavitcher Yeshive in Monsey then, but there was something along YTV lines.

The info you state about how the letter (looks like an aerogramme, from the image in Heichal) reached CH and Heichal is interesting. Vi kumt es az aza mentsch zol hoben aza eidem ? ;-)

Anyway, I understand that writing from memory one could forget some details, but I wanted to clarify the matter further, and, b"H, I think I was matzliach. Anyone interested should look at the piece in Heichal.

Noch a zach - I don't recall it saying explicitly that Rav Dessler would be part of the hanholo of the proposed Yeshive (at least not ayfen ort). So does that mean he was planning to stay at Ponevezh and just make such a Yeshive in England on the side (lichayre), and be like the honorary Pres. of the Yeshive ? Or did he want to move back to England ???

B"H I got my hands on a copy of the Artscroll book in the photo. For the record, I found the following related to matters discussed here -

P.23 - The Desslers davened in Lubavitch shtibel when they lived in Homel because there were disturbances in Ashkenazic Shuls there at the hands of the socialist bund.

ibid - REED studied with R. Mordechai Yoel (last name?), leading authority on writings of AR, in his youth. Probable that his knowledge of of Chassidishe seforim started then (sounds like case of R. Soloveitchik of YU).

P.97 - REED's identification with Tanya, his learning Tanya during WWI.

P.129-30 - RIDM's visit when he stayed with REED. It says that he stayed for a week or more. They discussed Tanya.

p.290-292-esp. 292 - REED drawing from wide range of sources, including Chassidic ones - not only early Lubavitch writings, but also R. Nachman of Breslov, Sefas Emes, R. Zodok, and R. Mendel of Vitebsk.

P.293 - REED told his talmidim that his talks were considered 'nit mussar' by the mashgichim of Eretz Yisroel.

So, while it's true that it doesn't mention the letter that made it into Heichal, it cannot be said that it ignores Lubavitch.

On Chassidus in Lithuania: (very long)
