Matisyahu Express - Next stop: Karlin

So it seems like Matisyahu, the great White/Jewish hope, has left Chabad and joined Karlin. He's not sure yet which Karlin, whether Pinsk or Stolin, but one of them. Don't get me wrong here, I wish him well and all the luck in the world, but there's seems to be a lack of appreciation on his part, as is often the case. Also, if you ask me I'd say that this seems to be a pattern with him, not liking his surroundings after a while and looking for something new. One line in particular seems to sum it all up for me: "At first it was very exciting to me, but after learning it for hours a day for two years, the ideas weren’t fresh anymore." He seems to quickly run out of patience, and gets tired of doing the same thing over and over again. Then again maybe he'll become a righteous Karliner and settle down. Right.

You'll surely chalk this one up to me being oversensitive, but it sure seems like Matty's a little bit of an ingrate, not appreciating what was done for him in Chabad, both in the Yeshivos he learned in, and in the Shlichus Network. Getting free PR, albeit Chabad benefitted too, sure didn't hurt in his career. One thing's for certain, there's no way in heck that the Karliner, especially the more "old-style" Pinsker, will allow for him to continue "beatboxing" in clubs while becoming one of them, especially since he announced to the world that he belongs there now. For some reason some Lubavitchers were happy to have him as their own, and allowed for that genre to become popular even amongst their own children. Now that he's introduced that to Lubavitcher kids and taught them that it was cool to be frum and Bob Marley at the same time let him peddle his wares elsewhere, and let's see the kind of reception he gets there. Something tells it won't be pretty in Karlin. Then again, I could be wrong again.

Conniptions and Cosmopolitan on Coney

Yehupitz commenting on When Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin celebrated 100 years ------- The reason R Schechter and R Hutner refused the hazmono is that they were not goires R'Moshe. Something unknown to the world at large (because the Satmar Rov became the public face of the dispute) is that when R'Moshe issued the Artificial Insemination Teshuva, R'Hutner wrote him off as a godol and was not goires him. At Ner Israel, there was a private mesora that once when R'Ruderman and R'Hutner were sitting next to one another before a meeting, R'Moshe walked into the room and R'Ruderman was starting to rise when R'Hutner pushed hard on his seatmate's leg to stop him from rising. It would make more sense to state that R Schechter could not get onto the Moetzes until R'Moshe, whose Beis-Din he defied, was niftar. To understand R'Hutner's views on his rights as a Rosh Yeshiva, one would have to wait for a history of the Beis Hatalmud Yeshiva in Israel he led briefly with R'Schwartzman the ex-son-in-law of R Aharon Kotler. An Ashkenazi admirer says: Rav Hutner z"l was feisty and made many enemies among both chaveirim/peers and talmidim. Harabbonim Shurkin, Cantor, Kleinkaufman, Shvartzman just to name a few. IMO the touchy-feely model for G'dolim (e.g. Rav Pam z"l) is not the only one that is valid. Rav Hutner's alienation of some do not diminish his stature in my eyes any more than do similar alienations by the Rambam, the Kotzker and the Satmar or, for that matter the Ba'al Shem or the Ba'al HaTanya do. Different shorshei neshoma, I guess. As a matter of fact several years after moving to EY but back for a Yom Tov in America Rav Hutner was asked if he would be keeping Yom Tov Sheyni and quipped "lu mir nuhr zehn, ikh hob ah voinung in EY un ah voinung in America, ikh hob talmidim in EY un talmidim in America, ikh hob SONIM in EY un SONIM in America. Altz vuss ah mentsh darf hubin hub ikh in baida pletzer, verrt es guhr ah shvereh shaila.... Mashgiach woes at Chaim Berlin adds: Rav Shlomo Carlebach was the Mashgiach Ruchani for about 12 years, but when Rav Hutner and his son-in-law went to settle in Yerushalayim to build their new "Pachad Yitzchok" Yeshiva, they left Chaim Berlim Yeshiva in the hands of R. Aaron Schechter as the Rosh Yeshiva and Avrohom Fruchthandler as the President. Rav Carlebach was put in the tough situation of being forced to work UNDER Rav Schechter as mashgiach but he refused to be an "eved knani" to Reb Aaron. Rav Hutner asked him if he would be prepared to be an "eved knani" under Rav Aaron and he told Rav Hutner (b'zeh haloshen:) "I ain't no eved knani" --- so they told bachurim not to go to his chumash chaburas, then they told him to leave, and when he refused they took out his chair, table and shtender. He took them to a Din Torah by Rav Moshe Feinstein and they refused to go. The rest is history. Since then, Rav Carlebach has written five machshove seforim that are called "Maskil Lishlomo" on what he calls "Emunos VeDeios" in beautiful loshen kodesh. In style and content they are almost identical to Rav Hutner's Pachad Yitzchok seforim. The intensity of the machlokes is still known by many people and there is still no sholem. It is assur to mention Rav Carlebach's name in the Yeshiva Chaim Berlin. When Rav Shimon Groner passed away after struggling for 25 years as Mashgiach Ruchani, Rav Shechter appointed his oldest son, Rav Mordechai Zelig Shechter as the new mashgiach ruchani of Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin. Rav Yonasan David is still in Yerushalayim, but he comes to Chaim Berlin, where he sits in the front with Rav Shechter and they both say the Ma'amorim with Rav Hutner's Toyra on Pesach and Sukkos.... I believe it was Henry Ford who said "show me a man who's never made an enemy and I'll show you a man who's never made anything."

Wiki Stub

Became a BT at 12 years old, a Skverrer a few years later, yet very much continued on the path of acquiring more and more secular knowledge. I always thought that you couldn't do that in Neu Skver. He continues to spend much time in MO circles and even coaches MO Hockey! Yes, appearances can be deceiving, and the fact that he squooshes his Peyos and wears old-fashioned glasses like a Skverrer Chossid doesn't say all that much, but it does show that he wants to look like one of them, which is something after all, considering how much time he spends away from Skver. The video presented here really doesn't do justice to Reb Mayer, being that the host of this (public access?) TV program is a total dufus and doesn't let the man get a word in edgewise, and goes off on long tangents every time he pleases. Yet, we can still get a good glimpse into what makes him tick. I just can't get over the fact that he lives in and speaks for Skver.....

Stick with us and you'll find true peace

[An email exchange sent to me recently, where a "Chareidi" and a Talmid on the edge of the Chareidi world have an exchange of words. The Chareidi explains to the Talmid the concept of Daas Torah, who has it and who doesn't, and why it needs to be this way: He uses a letter from Reb Elchonon Wasserman HaYad to bolster his claim. (And, please folks, don't lose your sense of humor, OK?]

R' Elchonon Wasserman HY"D wrote: All Torah leaders have Daas Torah to a certain degree. Some have 50%, others 25%, etc, while the rest of the person's mind is not Daas Torah – it is perhaps business daas or other people's opinions or some other type of understanding. Pure Daas Torah is only found amongst Gedolei Torah who have cast off the transient vanities of this world and are loyal exclusively to the Torah perspective .

(Kovetz Mamarim)

Talmid asks: Fine, so does "Daas Torah" include opposite de'ahs?

Chareidi: But of course!

Talmid: That's what I say -- So let them allow for other De'ahs to be heard!

Chareidi: Too risky; you must know by now the dangers of allowing people to think for themselves - they will have too many options and we cannot tell where this may lead. The very definition of Judaism could be lost in the sea of possibilities... who would gain from that? No, it is best if people just stay within our stated terms and all will be well - there is nothing to gain from diversity of thought other than confusion and pain. Really, it's for the best - if the masses would understand this they would thank us for it.

So ends this exchange between the Chareidi and the Talmid.

A short time later, the Talmid sends another email to the Chareidi:

Dear Rabbi,
I am feeling calmer already. Thanks to your wonderful advice, I have realized that I never enjoyed thinking for myself anyway. It was just something that my parents, who were modern Jews, wanted me to do so that they would feel that they succeeded in raising what they narrow-mindedly considered a healthy, well-rounded, existentially-focused and creative child. They had no idea how stressful this could be for someone who was more inclined to blind conformism and the incomparable pleasures of couch-potatohood.

With deep gratitude,
Your Talmid.

The Chareidi's response comes quickly.

Dear Talmid:
We appreciate your frankness, and we would like to point out that these were, no doubt, secular ideas that your esteemed Jewish parents had adopted, that caused them to feel the desire to influence you to think out out of the box. It is disconcerting that you still (even now) may associate this with their being Jewish - I assure you that had they been protected from foreign influences they would not have done this. We understand that many of our parents had to deal with many struggles - they were turbulent times - but it is our sincere hope that we can eliminate this attitude and at the very least save the future generations, even if some of the past generations were unfortunately harmed. We cannot stress the advantages of staying in line with our mainstream positions. Stick with us and you will find true peace. We wouldn't tell you this if we didn't really care.

Rabbi ______,
Agudas Gedolei Olam For A Better Tomorrow

But the Talmid has another dilemma:

Rabbi, I'm so mechubad that you deigned to answer me about my search for inner peace. I've just renewed my prescription to the Chareidi Observer and plan to stick to you like a fly to fly-paper from now on. BTW I have a Halachic she'eiloh: do you think it would be ba'al tashchis to destroy all the grass that grows between the cracks in the sidewalk in my neighborhood? It looks so antinomian and unaesthetic...

Chareidi:
We are pleased with your progress. Hashem is with you. And don't worry, we're the good guys; you're on the right team now. As to your shayloh: Removing the grass is not halachically problematic, but it's beneath the dignity of the Jewish people to take part in the removal. Therefore, a goy should be rented for this practice.

Talmid: Rabbi, I knew that Hashem created Goyim for a reason! I just don't get why He created grass...

Chareidi:
To keep Goyim & animals busy of course!

Convention News?

Can anybody fill us in Vos S'hut zich Geredt by the Convention this weekend? Please don't tell me that there was a Protest held by the NK. I read YeshivaWorld too, believe it or not.

I think the idea of putting Yerushalayim as a theme this year is hilarious, really. Since when was that ever an issue in Agudah circles? That was usually left for the Dati-LeUmi and Lubavitch crowds. I guess when your influence in the Frum crowd dwindles like that, and you need to drop down a notch and go for the modern, then their agendas also need to be discussed.

Impostors, all of them!

(Reb Lazer Hager of Vizhnitz zt"l on the left)

Reb Yissocher Shlomo Teichtel recalls what a Lithuanian Rov once told him:

This Rov from Kovno Slabodka was at the Kenessiah Gedolah and Marienbad and wasn't happy with what he saw there. He "realized" that all these Hungarian Rabbonim were was a bunch of impostors wearing Rabbinic garb but not talking the talk. They wore wide-brimmed hats and silver-tipped canes, but had no Torah to go with it. They were haughty fellows those Magyars and had nothing to back it up. Whereas the Lithuanian Rabbonim were all humble and scholars and didn't wear the garb. Why, even Reb Chaim Ozer of Vilna, the leader of World Jewry wears the garb of a simple Jew! I saw one who had a large entourage with him - says the Rov - and I told myself that I'd observe them and see what their level of Torah knowledge is. I asked some of the people with him and they knew nothing of what I asked, then I asked the Rov a question in the Rambam and he too had no answer for me!

Was it fair for him to base his opinion of all Hungarian Rabbonim on one chance encounter he had at a resort area? Did he at all know whom he was engaging in that Shmuess? Wasn't he a bit quick to judge?

(Reb E.C. Althaus HaYaD)

a diary written by Reb Eli Chaim Althaus HaYaD, a Mekurev to Bais HoRav and the Rebbe's Shadchan, about the wedding of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin on 14 Kislev 5689 in Warsaw.

[= נהייתי שמח מאד].

When Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin celebrated 100 years -------

(Reb A.M. Shechter)

------- They forgot about one guy

It's quite a book, by the way, a "coffee table" thing with a boatload of history, and some fascinating pictures too, but for some reason they couldn't remember that he had spent 15 years under their employment. They have names and pictures of Rebbes, Melamdim and Teachers going back to the teens and 20's. They have newspaper articles from that same time period heralding all kinds of events and stories about the Yeshivah, but no mention of him. They mention the secular studies teachers, principals, the food providers and the fundraisers, but no mention of him. As far as the current leadership is concerned, and as far as the annals of history tell the story, He never as much as spent one day there. Why was he Zoycheh to such treatment?

Reb Shlomo shlit"a ben Reb Yosef Tzvi HaYa"d Carlebach. He was quite a personality from what I understand, a prime disciple of the late Rabbi Isaac Hutner from the very early days, and a man that spent many years there, but he never made it to the book that celebrated its long history. He incurred their wrath forever, and was deleted forever. Let's examine this further, shall we?

According to the Wiki article he had a falling out with the Hanholas HaYeshivah when Rabbi Hutner left to Eretz Yisroel to build a Yeshivah there. He was seemingly promised the position of Mashgiach Ruchni and figured that now was the time for the promise to be fulfilled. But Reb Aron Shechter and his SIL Reb Yonason David would have none of that, they made it known that he was no longer welcome in the hallowed halls of The "Gur Aryeh Institute." So Reb Shlomo went and did what many of us would do, he called the current Moetzes Member to a Din Torah, and not just anywhere, but to the Agudas HaRabbonim, then under the leadership of HaRav Moshe Feinstein z"l.

Some people do see themselves as being above the law, believe it or not, and the YRCB clan was from those people. The term used in Wiki is quite cute; "Rabbi Carlebach attempted to bring the termination of his employment and the manner in which it was done to adjudication with various batei din ("Jewish religious courts") but Rabbi Hutner maintained that he was not subject to such proceedings in this instance." In other words, Nisht em meint men. Yes, some people need to listen to Hazmonos, and especially when they're called to DT by the Godol HaDor, but not them. So Reb Shlomo found himself without a job, and to his credit never took it to the secular courts, like they do today at the Yeshivah on the hill in Ir HaTeyreh Bene Beraq. Nobody - I guess - saw anything wrong with ignoring Hazmonos to DT, and one of them is even considered to have Daas Torah by the late Reb Moshe Sherer, an alumnus of YRCB, who rewarded him by putting him on the Moetzes. And so, my friends, that in a nutshell is the story of Reb Shlomo the Rabbi and not the musician, a man who like Al Gore, came oh-so-close to being the next Mashgiach of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin. In his place was put the late Reb Shimon Groner, cousin of Leibel, a grandson of the Alter and Mitteler Rebbes, but a Misnaged vi in posuk shteit.

(The Rebbe around the time of his wedding)

Col

I think that even those of you who may not have the best of feelings towards the Rebbe can understand the emotion that's associated with the the revealing of a picture like this. Imagine for a moment that you had a Zeide who you knew only in his old age, and of whom you never saw a picture of when he was young, I would think you'd have your breath taken away when being a shown a picture of him dressed in his Shabbos finery. Although there are some pictures of the Rebbe in that T'kufah still I was overcome with emotion upon seeing it.

Warped Judaism

In conjunction with (actually mostly by) Chabakuk Elisha:

I realize, based on my post reacting to contemporary Jewish publications that I'm probably in the minority – but when Hirshel sent me the link to THIS book I almost fell off my chair. I'm sorry, but there is something fundamentally unspiritual about an approach which covers up all divine mystery and human spontaneity like a cement truck.

I don't know the Rabbi that wrote it, but really, books like these are what reinforce the notion that there are more than small differences between the different strains of Yiddishkeit, and these folks and I are just different. The idea of the book, namely appreciating the mundane day-to-day activities and seeing them as Mitzvos, isn't the problem. That's fine – even laudable. But the latter part is what drives me insane. Is this a joke? My G-d! The idea that we're building a portfolio for the world to come is nothing less than the death of the soul of Yiddishkeit. And while I guess that's fine if you're not into soul; but for Jews that ARE into soul, books like these are like a stake into our hearts. It's such a completely different message, such a completely different Judaism, such a completely different purpose of life! And it's one that runs directly counter to the work of the great Tzaddikim who worked so tirelessly to insure that Yiddishkeit remain a body WITH a soul!

At first the book looks like a very good and helpful tool. He brings the Sefer HoIkkarim that says that one Mitzvah with Kavonoh is more than a multitude of ones done without, and that just thinking beforehand that we're about to do a Mitzvah greatly increases the amount of Mitzvos you do properly. Were he to end there, this book would be a welcome addition to anybody's library; but once he starts with the "Airline Miles" he loses me, and I'm sure many others as well. He reassures the reader that doing Mitzvos for reward is "no sin," it's just that "Serving without expectation of reward is simply more exalted." The author understands that many of us are hesitant to embark on this reward program, and that they've never heard of doing Mitzvos for reward only, but he reassures us all: "If I promised someone a billion dollars for shining my shoes, for example, he might be skeptical, even if I proved that I was serious. A billion dollars is just too good to be true! For people who cannot comprehend the rewards of the World to Come, it might help to contemplate the more immediate, and therefore more believable, benefits of performing mitzvos consciously."

I understand the concept of mitoch shelo leshmoh bah leshmah. But emphasizing the shelo lishma? Isn't that a bit much? Is that even Judaism? I really don't know. I don't know who is attracted to such Judaism, but I'm willing to admit that some may be. Is our focus supposed to be on the rewards package after checking out of here after 120 years? This entire premise just pushed all my buttons – am I a child that I must be tricked into being a good boy? Is Yiddishkeit some kind of a game all about collecting the most brownie points? I think that reward gets too much airplay. I can just see it, "Well maybe I should smile at this old woman and say hello after all, you know I will have more of a reward in Olam Haboh, so it really is in MY best interest to do it." I think that all this emphasis on Olam Haboh has become confused. Friends, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is not what it's all about – not even close. Sometimes, we shake that carrot in front of our more base elements when absolutely necessary, but if we focus on it too much we become anything but an Am Kadosh. Anything but a G-dly people. Let's take the concept of mesirus nefesh. Now, generally speaking, this is not an exclusively Jewish concept – in fact, some of our best enemies are really into their form of it, They're also known as "homicide bombers". In fact the reason for this warped idea is specifically because those folks live in this paradigm of the "he who has the most points at the end of the game wins." But Yiddishkeit is not really a "next-world" religion, farkert – we're a "this world" religion, and our purpose is simple: "laasos lo Yisborech diroh bitachtonim." That's the goal, not what we've got in store behind door number two.

Chassidim of Torah

Mayn Leben's Geshikhte is a book of memoirs published in 1928 in Petach Tikvah written by a Sheychet from Bessarabia/Moldova named Reb Pinches Dov Goldenstein who somehow became somewhat of a Lubavitcher Chossid. (To be a Lubavitcher Chossid living that far away from Lubavitch was somewhat uncommon, being that there plenty of Rebbes nearby, but there were many others.) By that I mean that it doesn't seem like Lubavitch and Chassidus Chabad became part of him, but rather he traveled to the Lubavitcher Rebbes when necessary instead of traveling to the Tolner or Tchernobler, or Trisker Rebbe who were all geographically much closer to him. It also doesn't seem to play that much of a role later on in life, meaning there's no mention of the Rebbe or Chassidus. He writes of the time he traveled to Lubavitch to consult with the Tzemach Tzedek about his Parnossoh, since he was just finishing his Shechitah training and wanted a blessing to get a shtelle somewhere. Years later he traveled to the Rebbe MaHaraSH and was there during the week of Sheva Brochos for one of the children.

At that time he once hid in the Rebbe's house to observe the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek's behavior and his daily schedule, and saw that all he does is sit and learn! He sits locked up all day bent over Seforim and when he needs his meals to be served he bangs on the table and the Meshamesh brings his food. The same happens when he's done, the MaSHBaK comes and removes the dirty dishes. There were no Tishen and there were no Seudos, thus there was no Shrayim to be had. The only time you saw the Rebbe was when he said Chassidus, or if you were lucky enough to get a Yechidus, otherwise the Rebbe was locked in his room learning and writing Tshuvos and Maamorim. The Maamorim were profound and difficult, especially if you were just hearing it in person. It was almost as if the simple Yid, the one who Chassidus was made for, had nothing to find in Lubavitch, the HQ for the torchbearers of the derech HaBaal Shem Tov !!

When Reb Pinchos Goldenstein traveled home he went on foot, not having the money for a ride in a wagon. In his native Rumania he met a group of Chassidim who were returning from a trip, possibly from their Rebbe and hitched a ride with one of them. They asked him where he was coming from, and he told them "from Lubavitch." Chabadsker? What do you want with the Kalte Litvaks those Chabadskers, the big Farshteyers that they are, and the Tiffe Chassidus that they're into. Do they know how to drink like us? come with us to Tolne or Trisk and we'll show you how it's done. He politely declined their offer, but we can learn alot from that little anectode. Chassidus Chabad wasn't originally formed for the Anoshim Peshutim, or at least they had a difficult time "making it" there. The AR was the only one who wouldn't belittle the Lomdim. Besides for the Chadorim the AR set up and maintained, which required that you be Boki in all realms of Torah, there was also the added Chassidus, the AR's Torah that you had to learn and know. That doesn't allow for simple folk. The Mitteler Rebbe's Chassidus only made it more difficult. So we can see from that how throughout the generations Chassidus underwent another transformation, at least as far as making it less difficult to become a Chossid.

Food for thought when you sit down to your next Farbrengen.......

Sad Comment of the day

(Rabbonim from the Soviet Bloc during the Cold War)

U N commenting on Circus Tent: Today's Pics:

The thread mentioned the Rebbe Rashab as wearing the Russian Kasket, to which we were told that from him Iz Kein Rayeh since the Rebbe Rashab was an Oofgeklerte Mentsh!

He begins:

"The problematic thing that we can bill as an error in retrospect is that he (The Rebbe Rashab - HT) and his son (The Rebbe RaYatz - HT) have seriously antagonized the new Bolshevik rule against Yiddishkeit. While (the) Tzar's government made his life and life of Jews in all of Russian Empire a living hell - (the) May Laws in particular - when (the) Bolsheviks came to power, Chabad leadership chose to get mixed up in politics and antagonize the new power in so many ways. This cost many people their life and/or freedom. It's easy for us to speculate of course, but it can be argued that if all the Rebbes and Rabbonim didn't preach so loudly their total rejection of the Soviet power, maybe (the) Kremlin wouldn't be so eager to assume every frum Jew to be an enemy of the Soviet state by definition."

Ad Kan Leshono.

I sit and think: "where did THAT come from?!" What it is he wants? He is a clever man and he does understand the dangers of Communism and its relationship to Religion in general and Judaism in particular, so why then does he make such statements? I imagine he's echoing the sentiments of some people of that generation, but it seems naive to say the least. I should be somewhat "happy" to see that these people saw the Rabbeyim as such a force that they could determine the policies of the Soviet Union regarding all Jews, but this seems a bit far-reaching even to a "believer" like myself. At first I was going to see these words as "hateful," and ignore them, and admittedly I do overuse that term sometimes. But then I realized that this cannot be considered hateful, but must rather be taken seriously, just so that we can examine the mindset of such people. I don't think I've ever seen such criticism in writing, so maybe it was something passed down from generation to generation within the community of Yotzei Rusye Non Chabad.

Was it jealousy of the success of the Rabbeyim in getting their Talmidim to stand up the regime and lead such exemplary lives that caused statements of blame to be made by others?! (Of course this too - The Mesiras Nefesh - is a lie in their eyes, and part of the "lies" I've been spoon fed over the years....) I often read the memoirs of some of the Ziknei Chabad, and see that many were married to daughters of other Chassidishe Kreizen, mainly from the Tchernobler Cheyder. The old Tchernobler Rebbe of Bnei Beraq was a Talmid of the underground Lubavitcher Yeshivos, and many of Today's Chassidishe families have their roots in other Russian/Ukranian Chassidesen, simply because Chabad was all there was. Others would rather have their children be flies in the proverbial wind, and said Lubavitch? I should send him there and have him become a Chabadsker? over my dead body!! U N strikes me as one of those. I always wondered why the Rebbe would speak of his FIL the Frierdige Rebbe's time in Poland and refer to it as a period of VaYekanu Boy Echov, after all why would they be jealous? but I'm beginning to see it now....

Today's Mussar Lesson

(Divrei Yonah - Reb Yonah Forst z"l,)

It seems like Reb Michoel Ber Weissmandl wasn't such a Satmarer after all, at least when it came to finding reason within some of the tragedies that the Jewish people bore witness to. While the Satmar Rebbe blamed the Tziyonim for all the ills that befell the Jewish People during WW2, since it was in essence a revolt against G-d, RMBW blamed even the anti-Zionists. He blamed the Yidden who weren't honest in their business dealings with Goyim, which is why they got what was rightfully theirs. The word scary comes to mind, since he's essentially excusing the looting and reacquisition of Jewish property done by the Poles, Magyars, Ukranians, Lithuanians and any other local Goy. I had this as a joke in private conversations, where people would say how the Goyim allowed for this to happen, but never as an official excuse by a Rov BeYisroel .

A free translation:

Reb Yonah
says that we can be MeOrer those that are lenient with regards to Gezel Akum and To'us Akum, that although the Mogen Avrohom says that To'us Akum is Muttar, still it's not considered LoChem, yours. We can allude to what I heard from Reb Michoel Ber Zt"l when he tried to explain what happened in the last Churbon, that although the beginning of the Tzores was in Germany (birthplace of Reform - HT) and from it spread to other countries, still we see that the Yidden in Germany managed to save themselves and to a great extent their belongings and holdings as well, whereas in other countries, in those places all of the belongings and holdings eventually made their way to the local Goyim and to the German conqueror. - HT) Why was this?

RMBW said that the reason this happened was because the Yidden in Germany were honest in their business dealings with the Goyim, they didn't rob or steal, therefore the money and property that they had was really theirs, it wasn't attained by dishonest means, so there was nothing that belonged to the Goy. Whereas, in the other countries, where poverty was so great, the Yidden in those were Mattir for themselves to be "lenient" sometimes when it came to dealings with Goyim. Therefore when the Tzores started Hashem made it so that the property that was in Yiddishe Hent that should've belonged to the Goy returned to its "rightful owners!" - VeHadvorim Noroyim. Maybe we can say - says Reb Yonah - that this is what is alluded to when the Mogen Avrohom says that although To'us Akum is Muttar still it's not yours, LoChem, because in the end all that doesn't rightfully belong to you - that you didn't get via honest business practices, even if it was from a Goy - will be returned to its rightful owner.

From this we can see how careful we need in all of our business dealings, because we can never know what the end result can be, and in heaven there's a Cheshbon for everything.

Election fever hits Monsey

A whole lot seems to be riding on the elections scheduled for November 6th in the Town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York. The main guy up for re-election is Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence, the man who made Monsey into the awful town parts of it are now by granting zoning variances to anybody who made it worth his while. Mr. Lawrence is rumored to be a very rich man from meetings with developers.....First, a little Social Studies lesson for you outsiders, I hope I don't mess it up, being that I'm new to the town. Monsey is what's known as an unincorporated village, a hamlet as it were. I'm not sure why that is, but that's the fact. Vizhnitz did go ahead and incorporate certain blocs around the big Shul into the village of Kaser. What that did was allow them to introduce new zoning laws, which would supposedly alleviate the housing crisis that supposedly exists in the frum community. In reality what happened was that most lots doubled in value and those that owned homes already suddenly got rich overnight. Many sold and moved away, while others began attaching rental apartments to their existing homes, thereby creating income for themselves and turning neat little homes into awful eyesores with all kinds of entrances.

While that has been the case with existing homes the worst is what's happened to the open spaces. A plot of land meant for a one family home has been re-zoned to allow for G-d knows how many apartments, and not just a three family home but a maze of small apartments stretching for as far as the eye can see, with a slab of concrete or asphalt in the front, and lots and lots of garbage. Roads that are meant for suburbia and occasional light traffic now are clogged way past capacity, and cause traffic tie ups at all busy times. Open spaces are gobbled up by greedy developers claiming to do it for the "People," and build "low-income" housing while in essence they just line their pockets with the profits from the half-a-million dollar apartments they build. Every "second day" there are stories of lawsuits being brought by developers against villages that don't allow them to tear up all the old existing zoning laws and build a sprawling 100 unit development on a plot of land meant for 7 homes.

What happens is that an already miffed secular and Gentile population gets more and more miffed every day. They see what was once a pristine community become a haven for traffic and garbage, and old stereotypes begin to be accepted by an otherwise understanding populace. Jews become synonymous with greedy, dirty and rude. All of us. You can see it the checkout lines at Pathmark and Walmart; cashiers and customers groaning and moaning about the long lines and rude Jews and how they clog up the stores. In this regard all non-frum people now have found a common enemy - the frum Jew. Barriers between blacks and whites and rich and poor now fall when we're dealing with the black hatter. Of course the frum Jew just looks at them and sees anti-Semites, and sees himself as doing everything just the way it should be, with nothing needing to change just because he's now living in the suburbs amongst different people. He figured that the worst that could happen is that the people living there would just pack up and leave, and that DOES happen, but that's not the only thing that happens.

The backlash began a few years back and has been gaining momentum ever since. Movements like Preserve Ramapo have sprung up and demand that the "rape" of their town stop immediately. Jews, of course see it as an anti-Semitic movement out to stop the Jews from coming in there, but that's just plain silly. Shuls and Yeshivos will be eventually be casualties of the eventual turning back of zoning laws, and the frum will have themselves to "thank" because they never stopped to think that maybe the locals are offended by their actions. In the meantime they're fighting very hard to keep St. Lawrence in power so that at least existing variances will remain the same, which Preserve Ramapo had promised to repeal. The above Kol-Koreh is a very toned down letter, albeit made to sound as if the world were coming to an end, but some of the campaign literature not signed by Rabbonim was downright hilarious. Yiddish posters with slogans like "Girush Monsey" and "Germany 1938" were displayed in many of the shuls and sent out in mass mailings. People were frightened into believing that if G-d forbid Preserve Ramapo wins they'd all be thrown out of their homes, and their shuls and Yeshivos shut down forever. That didn't make them any new friends from within their secular and Gentile neighbors, if anything it made the current situation even worse. It remains to be seen what will happen with us in Monsey/New Hempstead/Wesley Hills/Spring Valley, but it sure doesn't look good.

- NOTE: BY NOW THE ELECTIONS HAVE TAKEN PLACE, AND THE "FRUM" CANDIDATES - those endorsed by "Rabbonim and Askonim" - HAVE BEEN VOTED IN. -

Frying Pan to Fire

(L-R: Reb Leibel Raskin (partially hidden), Reb Shlomo Matusoff, Reb B Gorodetzky, and TL"Y Reb Sholom Eidelman)

Reb Shlomo Matusoff lived from birth to adulthood under Soviet rule, no matter what commenter U N says. As a young Bocher he was arrested and imprisoned - together with a dozen other Bochurim - for studying Torah, mostly Gemorroh, Rashi, Tosfos by the way. After surviving the war years in faraway Uzbekistan - as did many other Chassidim and Nit Chassidim - he managed to escape the Soviet Union and arrive with hundreds of other Lubavitcher families to the D.P. Camps of Poking, Germany to await his final destination. Some waited a few years, but in the end they came However, Reb Shaym'ke, instead of traveling with the others to the relative comfort of Israel or the United States he was dispatched to far-off Morocco in 1950. He was in essence the first Shliach of the Rebbe, and he saved thousands of Moroccan children from Shmad. His passing this Sunday leaves a great void in the Lubavitcher/Shlichus family.

When I see people knock the institution of Shlichus, or I see other organizations touting their accomplishments, I think of people like Reb Shlomo and lbc"l Reb Sholom Eidelman ZG"Z and Reb Laibel Raskin O"H and laugh. I laugh at bitter old people like the Natchalnik who obviously got his daily dose direct from the Kremlin, and still can't shake it from their collective memories. They seem to have a whole different view of reality, sort of like the Arab view of the world, that everything we see is really a sinister Zionist plot, with all the buttons being pushed by the Mossad, which in this case would be the powers that be at Chabad. The International Chabad movement got all its people together and came up with this big conspiracy about how they survived all those years under Lenin and Stalin, when in reality it was really the Litvishe and Peylishe who did all the work. We just never see or hear from them, because they shun Koved and publicity, מה שאין כן the Chabad PR monsters.

So while the rest of your (and mine) Zeides and Bubbes were learning about stocks and bonds and Cobalt China and Mom's knishes Reb Shlomo was learning about donkies and Chumus, about Hashkavot and Mimuna. He was traveling from town to town in Morocco and setting up Chadorim and learning Torah with Yiddishe Kinder. Sefardishe Kinder. Thousands upon Thousands of Jewish children were saved from Shmad and the secular Alliance Schools that were offering a "better life" to these impoverished children if only they'd forget about being Jewish. Most children raised in Morocco in the last 50 years were Talmidim of Chabad schools. Living in Morocco meant constant uneasiness - if not fear - about being Jewish in a Muslim land, and there were times when their lives were in very real danger. Yet, with Hashem's help and the Rebbe's blessing they managed to raise a family there that puts most Gezha Crown Heights families to shame. Yes, the Matusoff children were sent away at a very young age, and yes they didn't merit to see the Rebbe as often as they liked, but it was worth it. Unlike other times when writing about such personalities I'll refrain from making comparisons to others.

Kudos to the Hamodia

It was tough to read, but they did make the effort. This weekend's English edition had two full (!) pages on Chabad Kiruv and the ongoing שלוחים convention. That's almost as much as they write about the "Philadelphia Russian Kollel," or the Shalom Torah Centers. Not to be outdone, they managed to write just as much about the D.A.T.A. Chanukas HaBayis this week in Dallas, so that ch"v there wouldn't be an outcry from the Oylem.

That's what these men do; They reunite the Jewish family, bringing back long lost memebers, some of which have been gone for generations.

Because I love you guys so much, and because you reciprocate, I've decided to transliterate what Yosef Dov had to say about Circus Tent: Tzaddik is relative. Then soon I'll have to translate it into English too.....

I tried keeping his exact words and grammar, even where I thought there should be changes. I hope his words are understood by all.

A wise man once said.....

"Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum hatred for a minimum reason."

"All it takes is one person… and another… and another… and another… to start a movement"

"Wonder rather than doubt is the root of all knowledge."

"A religious man is a person who holds G-d and man in one thought at one time, at all times, who suffers no harm done to others, whose greatest passion is compassion, whose greatest strength is love and defiance of despair."

"G-d is of no importance unless He is of utmost importance."

"Just to be is a blessing. Just to live is holy."

"Self-respect is the fruit of discipline, the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself."

"Life without commitment is not worth living."

"In regard to cruelties committed in the name of a free society, some are guilty, while all are responsible."

"Remember that there is a meaning beyond absurdity. Be sure that every little deed counts, that every word has power. Never forget that you can still do your share to redeem the world in spite of all absurdities and frustrations and disappointments."

"When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people."

"Awareness of symbolic meaning is awareness of a specific idea; kavvanah is awareness of an ineffable situation."

(The Chofetz Chaim in 1917)

I always thought that he never wore Rabbinic garb, and only wore the Kasket of the simple folk. Why then the Rabbonishe Shtraymel here?

Here
