Missing Schneersons

HoRabboni HaChossid Reb Yehudah Leib ben Admor Reb Shlomo Zalman MiKopust, died 1930s. The kever sits in the Petersburg cemetery, forgotten and neglected. A photo of the Tziyun recently was shown on the Chabad website "Shturem." I wonder if there were any children from him and where they are today. It would be nice if one of you, who has a Sefer HaTzetzoyim handy, could look it up and see what he finds. It seems like there are several others from Beis HoRav in that cemetery, because soon after Shturem showed the picture, COL went ahead and found the following:

Rebbetzin Rivka Schneerson, died 1933, 79 years old. Rivka was the daughter of Devorah Leah, daughter of the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch. Since she was born in 1854 she probably remembered her Elter zeide pretty well. Her father was Rav Levi Yitzchok Zalmanson of Velizh, and her husband was also a Schneerson., He was Rav Yehuda Leib Schneerson, Rov in Gomel and Vitebsk, and the son of Rav Yitzchok DovBer of Liadi, author of the Siddur MaHaRid. RYDS was a son of Rav Chaim Schneur Zalman of Liadi, son of the Tzemach Tzedek. A certain blogger uses this Matzeivah as "proof" that there is NO such name as Mushka, it's only Mussia. Nu, nu. The Matzeiva also includes her daughter, Mussia Blank, who passed away in 1956, and another woman, died 1967, who I was told may or may not have a non-Jewish name, so it may or may not be family. It's sad to see the negelect...

I thank the blogger formerly known as Tzemach Atlas for translating and explaining the Russian words for me.

In the comments on COL, it is mentioned that this Reb LYZ (the father of rebitzin Rivka) is a great-grandson of the Berditchiver and the Alter Rebbe, a child of the famed "Zhlubiner Chasunah", which took palce in תקס"ז.

Although he is an einikel of these two great Rebbeim it is actually from a different chasuna between 2 einiklach (Rebitzin Baila to R' Yekusiel Zalman) which took place in Liadi a year later in תקס"ח.

No proof on the Mussia, look they spelled Yehuda with an "Ayin".

Yes, I realize that, but the point he was trying to make was that it still seems to be the name, no matter how bad they spelled it!

You can also see how שנייערסהן was misspelled terribly as well.

This son Yehuda Lieb was the Mesader of the Magen Avos from his father.

How do you write the "sh" sound in the litvish alef-beis?

When I saw the title, I thought you were going to talk about Moshe Shneerson.

"The Rebbetzin used Moussia H Schneerson on her papers because that is what her Russian papers said and it was too hard to change them. You'd be surprised, especially among the Samarkanders, how many Lubavitchers have names like Boris or Lev on their papers and could not change them in the US."

I have no opinion about the "correct" version of the name Mousia/Mushka, I do know that the above is pure unadulterated crud. It's very easy to change your name in the United States.Especially upon receiving American Citizenship .

"If it said, in Hebrew characters, Moussia bas Aryeh Leib.."

Maybe I'm missing something here but it states clearly "Moussia bas R' Yehudah Leib". Moussia with a samech. Are we talking about the same picture?

The name wasn't "Shneurson", it was "Shneerson" so the spelling of the first half of it is justified.

I wonder what is the zechus of Sima Tikhonovna Bashmachnikova, who died in 1976 - 20 years after Mussia Blank - to lay there. Her paternal name doesn't sound very jewish, although Sima per se _is_ a nice Soviet-Jewish girl name.

yes, I wonder too.

Very interesting.
I guess young Lubavitchers in the US are discovering that there were all sorts of Banshaks from the Schneerson dynasty.
While the discussion is informative here , the 2 books on the Schneerson dynasty contains most of the relevant daTA AS DOES bEIS rEBBE.
iTS REMARKABLE THAT NOT ONE READER HAS MADE AN APPEAL TO THE VARIOUS HABAD ORGANIZATIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD (ESPECIALLY THE GROUPS THAT RUN 770) WITH BILION DOLLAR BUDGETS TO REPAIR THESE MATZEVOS !

On that Beis Hachaim there are 17 Shneersons matseivos. 2/3 of them were totally assimilated (the matseivos text is in Russian only).

Look at www.jekl.com (knowledge of Russian is necessary)
