Harav Chaim Berlin, son of The Netziv, Rov of Moscow, and later in Yerushalayim. A hadras ponim for the ages, don't you think?

I guess one of the shortcomings of being famous - for any reason - is to have pictures you may not want the Oylem to see appear in the papers, and these days: online in seconds. You need the press when it's good for you, and you hate them when they show things you're uncomfortable with. Which is why people get VERY excited when they come across "good stuff," pictures of Rosheshives from days gone by, and of Rebbishe families way back when. It makes them feel good about themselves - here's this big Rosheshiveh or Rebbe, and look at him - or her... They also posed for family pictures. That goes tenfold where Lubavitch is concerned; Lubavitch deserves it because they stick their faces out there for all to see, or so I'm told, so they shouldn't complain when people research their history and publish "juicy" stuff! Ultimately what happens is that family members publish these pictures, much to the dismay of the rest of the family, whether in book form or on the internet, and we all benefit from it eventually.

Reb Boruch Epstein, author of the "Torah Temimoh" and of Mekor Boruch (aka "My Uncle the Netziv") He was the son of Reb Yechiel Michel, (the Aruch HaShulchan and Rov of Novardok,) and a נהנה מיגיע כפיו, working as a banker in Pinsk.

Wife and sons of Reb Itzikel Twersky of Skver-BP. Reb Itzikel was a son of Reb Mordche of Skver, who was a brother of Reb Yaakov Yosef of New Square. We discussed him at length. He passed away some 25 years before his uncle, who didn't live a very long time either... l-r we have Reb Duvid'l of Boro Park, Gedalia Aron and Reb Mottele from Flatbush. The Rebbetzin, Mirel Twersky, was the daughter of Reb Pinchas Rabinowitz of Manestritz.

Wife and kids of Reb Chaim Twersky of Tchernobel-Loyev, who passed away in exile, in 1943. Rechil Devorah was the daughter of Reb Shayelle Tchechoyver, youngest son of the Divrei Chaim, The Sanzer Rov, zt"l. The Tchernobler Rebbe of Bnei Beraq, Reb Meshulam Zishe is seen top right. He was a talmid of the underground Lubavitch Yeshivos in the USSR, and managed to escape in 1934, IIRC. The little boy is presumably a brother, Yechiel, who passed away a short time ago in his 90's.

Reb Meshulam Zushe in his later years

There's a lot more where this came from...

What was she to the Manestritz Rebbe of Canarsie who passed on a few years ago?

Funny a Chernobyl chasid told me his Rebbe's family do not wear a shaytel because they are ayniklach of Divrei Chaim who did not hold of Shaytel...

I guess they are too scared of being considered Chasidish Lightweights unless they take on the full cotume....

Even Shvartz Slanim in Bnei Berak, who are considered some of the most fanatical in 'frumkeit' objects to this historical revisionism and tells his chassidim not to wear a hat on top of shaytel...

What ever happened to mesora ?
Were his Zaydes not frum enough ??

In Bobov they did not revert to pre-war womens head coverings because the Rebbe said it is pnimiyus that needs to change first .....

no, he started at home first

Does anyone know why the Bobover Rebbetzin wore a sheytel rather than a tichel or something more 'tzanz' like ?

Some claim the young Rebbetzin refused, others say the Rebbe didn't demand it, others say he was 'shvach' after the war and wasn't interested ????

Does anyone know anyhting about this ?

Does anyone know the story behind Benzion's divorce in the 70's that apparently Bobovers will not discuss - why is the subject so taboo ?? Was Benzion a bit of a 'bad boy' or something ?

As far as I've been able to say Bobov is 100% chitzonius with no pnimius at all!!!

Maybe he was following in the ways of his namesake, the first Benzion of Bobov , who married twice.

Does anyone know where the Boyaner Rebbe was taken and how he was trained or educated from age 9 (when taken away from his parents) until he was crowned Rebbe ???

i once heard from an eltere yid that when he was a boy in about 1930, the Torah Temimah, who was in the U.S. at the time, came to speak in his shul. the rov of the shul introduced rav epstein as the "gaon hador". our young protagonist screamed out "ehr is nit ken gaon, ehr hut nit ken bord!" he was sumarrily removed from the premises.

At least the catholic saints are officially celibate.
Our saints are not and as the admor has special kavonos at the proper time, he brings down special souls which in turn become a new species know in Latin as "homo bonshokus". Not only do we have to have proper reverence for the saintly saint but also for his myriads of progeny who grace our world centuries after the saint has passed on to his reward.
Another wonder of nature. the "homo bonshokus" transforms like a caterpillar into a monarch butterfly.
As generations pass the "homo bonshokus" transforms and resembles a monarch with a court that resembles the czars or the kaisers. With palaces, attendants, cardinal/dayan, henchman and attitude that resembles Marie Antoinette's.

Please provide a source or citation.

Fact: The Bobover Ruv's mother and mother-in-law wore Sanz compliant head coverings until they were niftar.

Question: Did the Bovover Ruv even need to ask his Rebbitzin to follow their practice?

Anonymous said...

If the Bobover Rebbe's mother, mother in law and first wife all complied, why would the second wife do differenty.

If post war the family women kept this practice, why would the second Rebbetzin think to do differently ?

Anonymous said...

Everyone who was ever near Bobov knows that the second Rebbetzin made a lot of trouble for her husband and even more so for Reb Naftuli Zyu who she saw as a threat to her sons takeover(especially due to immense difference in their personal character).

Looks like the second Rebbetzin won....Bobov wear sheitels and Benzion became Rebbe...looks like the Rebbetzin was a real power broker at home....

I was at Ben Zion's vort. As I recall it was in Yeshiva of Brooklyn on Ocean Parkway. I think the girls family lived nearby. IIRC I think the word was that she was too modern for him, too involved in her own fun and friends. Probably did not show proper respect for future heir to the throne. But what do I know, I was a kid, lol.

Your epigram says something about "litznusah" being forbidden. So the comment about "J...Belz "is OK in your eyes? A Jew who wears tefillin De R"T and davens Nusach HaAri can publish such a comment?

I dont think so, she made a nice chassidic shiduch afterwards, plus BZ was not so holy then anyway

Anonymous said...

who did she marry afterwards?

Anonymous said...

In Der Lita a person's erlichkeit was not measured by his beard.

Anonymous said...

married Biala family

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know why Benzion had such a bad name.....no one wanted him the second time around ?

If it was only because she was too modern, wouldn't any little Rebbelach want to become the future father in law of the Bobov dynasty ?

The Faltichner Rebbe of BP just did a shidech of his daughter with a aynikel of Shomrei Emunim.

Will the older brother Reb Luzer Twersky go to the wedding ?

Will he get a mitzvah tanz ?

At least he didn't become chabad...
