The Belzer Rov, HaRaHaK Reb Aron zt"l and Chassidim in Marienbad, Czechoslovakia. Tomorrow Tes Shvat is the Yom HaTzoloh of the Rov and his brother the Bilgorajer Rov zt"l in 5704. The first on left is Reb Yitzchok Noochem'l Twerski of Rawa Ruska, his BIL. First on right - holding the BR - is the hotel owner, but his name escapes me now. Much of what we have today as far as pictures of Rebbes and Rabbonim is from those days spent in Marienbad. Some photographer would stand around and get good shots; If I didn't know better I'd say they all stopped and posed for the picture. This is a fairly known picture, but never have I seen it this clear, with the Rov fully visible - from head to toe. To really appreciate it click the image, and see his holy Tzureh shine. I thank the anonymous sender of this picture. He'd prefer that his name not be mentioned. That's his prerogative.

The Frierdige Lubavitcher Rebbe - who's Yohrtzeit is Thursday Yud Shvat - exiting the VagZahl at Podbrodzie, Lithuania, in 5694-1934. On the left we see Reb Mordche Cheyfetz Hy"d holding the Rebbe's belongings, and on the right Reb Mendel Kupershtok. Reb Mordche traveled to America in the late '30's BeShlichus the FR, and returned in 1939. He was killed AKD"H in Riga in 1941, together with thousands of others, including Reb Itche Masmid and Reb Eli Chaim Althaus, HY"D. This picture too must be clicked to fully enjoy.

Do the Belzer chasidim really celebrate the day of their rebbe's salvation?!?

Have they rewritten history to protect the guilty? When did the dignity of the chicken hearted become more important than the blood and ashes of those fooled into staying behind?

Hirshel
I remember that Years ago that Berl Levin printed the Belzer picture from the FR Library in the Kfar Chabad

I don't know about Reb Mordche, but there were chasidim sent by the FR to America who would have much rather stayed in Europe with the Rebbe. They would then return if they were able to.

Hirshel - It obviously can't be 5744. What year?

The name of the hotel owner in Marienbad, was, Herr Leitner.
The Leitner family ran a kosher hotel in Mareinbad where many of the great Gdolim of the period stayed during their visits to Marienbad

Thanks for the name. (Although you don't seem to have one yourself...)

The correct name is Reb Moishe Dovid Leitner. Other pictures are together with our grandfather Reb Chaim Aryeh Leitner who was manager at the time and was also secretary of the Kenessiah Gedolah in Marienbad 1937.

My grandfather zatzal said through the hotel he had seen all the gedolim of pre war except for the Chofetz Chaim.
His Kovod Horabbonim was exceptional which gained much admiration from all the Rebbes nad gedolim.

Today in Belz teh Leitner family receive personal honour from the Rebbe.

There is a special strong connection between the Leitners and Belz & Bobov through the hotel.
Each one a unique story of its own.

And Leitner 2 says, a couple of years back a few of us went back to Marienbad and met a goy there (his father was Jewish nebech) who has been collecting Jewish photographs for years. He sends them all to a friend in Germany, who touches them up and improves their resolution immensely. He sent us a cd in the mail containing tens of such photos. This is one of them. Thank you for an amazing blog!
