that light brown building to the right doesnt exist anymore. I think it was burned down in 1967 when half of Detroit burned down in the Black Riots. around the corner from here are city blocks of empty grass with street lamps where houses and stores used to be before the riots.

I thought so, Yanover. The recent pic we had looked like it was the only building on the block.

Not the only building on the block but there aren't too many others. I was there a few months ago during the day. It was pretty scary. The neighborhood is really bad.

Well, Yudi Kolko did drive a old Plymouth in those days as reported in the NY Magazine expose on him. And he did have a shteller in Stolin in the late '60s until he was asked by Rav Dishon to leave at which point he was taken into open arms by Margulies at Torah Temimah.

This post is so appropriate for the 9 days in that Detroit is an absolute churva. I am a native Detroiter and my father z"l used to drive me through the old neighborhood and I knew it wasn't so nice anymore but it was a neighborhood. I just drove through there yesterday and couldn't believe the destruction. The Yeshiva Beth Yehuda building was built in the mid fifties, by the 1960's the area was largely Judenrein. The same goes for the other Jewish neighborhoods within the actual City of Detroit. Besides a conservative synagogue downtown, there is no Jewish presence, or any whites in Detroit. It's miond boggling to see how an entire huge city was abandoned and destroyed in such a short period of time.

SDR,
Unfortunately Detroit is the worst of the bunch of the post Watts riots era.It shows what happens when you allow poverty and lawlessness to take over.Newark NJ had the largest Jewish community in Jersey.Today it's non existent.
Sad.
Detroit, the city is finished.
