The Sights of Dayv Shurin

Dov's got a website

Not many details in his Biography

Dayv was a pioneer in Jewish Radio 30 years ago. He would work on the WNYM ( We need your money ) 1330AM in New York, and some of his shows included Shlomo Carlebach doing a radio call-in show. His father (Reb Efraim?) was a SIL of Reb Yaakov Kamienecki and writes the Hebrew column about Gedolei Yisroel in the Olomeinu every month. Today he does the Quality Carpet Jingle on Zev Brenner's radio shows, and also calls in with the news from Israel.

"Dayv"? What sort of name is Dayv? It's Dov, or Dove (like the past tense of dive, not like the bird), or else it's Berl. People who say a cheylem don't ever call people Deyv.

Or at least spell it Dave.

What do you mean? The Cholem is a Chaylem in the Lita, hence Dove becomes Dayv. Dave would miss the point and would change the name completely.

The name of his father, Ad Meah V'Esrim, is Rabbi Yisrael.

enough with Dov, now it's Heshy's turn.

Sorry anonymous if I confused his name. It has been a while since I read the Olomeinu. Does his father still live in Efrat?

My point is that nobody who uses a chaylem would pronounce Shurin's name as "Dave"; they would pronounce it as "Beryl".

And that if you want to represent that syllable in English, the natural way to spell it is "Dave", a word already familiar to English speakers, not as "Deyv".

let's try and refrain from generalizing, shall we?

I may have even heard it from him, Dayv Shurin himself!

It's much cooler than Dave, an average Joe name, anyway.

I think you may be mixing up Dayv's father and his uncle, zollen zei zeyn gezunt un shtark.

His uncle is the writer (maybe his father has written too, but I think the uncle, R. Aharon Ben-Zion shlite, is the ikkar writer).

Di tatte, zol zein gezund, vaynt in Efros. Der fetter, zol zeyn gezund, vaynt in Amerike.

I don't know about drugs, and your claiming he is a BT of sorts. My impression was that he was just an off-beat non-conformist.

He had another early album with a song called 'paper bridge' on it. It doesn't seem to be on his site.

He does have talent and creativity, even if he is not the greatest singer.

I don't know why you are knocking Dayv, he is always advertising the Gutnick chumash and doing other PR for Lubavitch lately. Actually that bothers me. That is understandable, but if so, you should like him !

Limaaseh, he had a rough childhood, his father was Rav of a shul in East NY (or around there), and the neighborhood went down, I think I heard Dayv say he was beaten up by those who invaded and destroyed the neighborhood. It must have been hard to see his neighborhood become choruv, his father's shul go down, loi oleinu, der Aybishter zol uphiten fun azeliche gezeireis.
