Speaking of טבריא...

Behold: Rabbis Noach (l) aka Noah and Shmuel Yaakov (r) Weinberg in the aforementioned city before their father's travels took them to the United States. The rest - as they say - is history. We never shall know what would have happened had they stayed there. Then again, Tverya had its issues with the youth in those days, much like Yerushalayim had, maybe even worse. Yes, Rabbis Weinberg left behind a very glorious and illustrious heritage in Tverya, one of Torah and Avodah, as part of the Slonimer "Kompanye" there. If you're of the Mitnagdic persuasion you might say that  especially Reb Shmuel Yaakov took on a more glorious heritage, that of Baltimore, and by extension Slabodka, but you won't hold it against me if I disagree. Even if he did marry Rav Ruderman's only daughter. What did Rabbi Noah exchange for Slonim? Not quite sure.

I thank he who sent me this picture.

RSYW was older by 7 years. So it is more likely that he is the one on the right.

Their father had to leave Tiverya because he was framed for the death of some Arab. I don't know the details, but that's the gist. Then, as they say, the rest is history. (So nobody left a heritage of Tiverya...) He had karka there, to which the family still has claims.

More later, if I have time, bli neder.

He would've been Mekabel a Rebbesche post, how can you compare. Look at his תורה, he was such an איש אמת, he didn't exchange for nothing

The Weinberg boys learned mostly in the US. There was no more Tiverya or Beis Slonim for them to be concerned with. There had been a fire and his cheder rebbe let a woman die, so he walked out of the cheder and refused to learn "by" him anymore. But that was not the end of his kesher to Slonim or Chassidus. RSYW learned in Torah V'Daas, then YMRCB where he came under the influence of RYH. RYH saw a real Yochid and admired it, and therefore gave him the freedom not to be a "chossid" of his. By the time he married RYYR's daughter, any interest in Chassidus, Slonim or otherwise, had been rejected.

It is known to talmidim, and was mentioned in a Yortzeit hesped, that he had a run-in with Chabad early on. He was interested in participating in the Release-Time program. And he did for a little while. He had reached his own conclusions and his own insight that Outreach to non-frum American Jewry back in his youth, and even before coming to Ner Israel he pursued this venue. (There is a longer saga about how he presented this concern to R'Aharon Kotler, who told him there were more important priorities. VeDaL for now.) The FR insisted that the program be identified with Chabad, so RSYW ended his involvement with it. I'm sure there are more details and twists, but that's the basic idea.

His father was niftar very very soon after the chasuna. R Noach was a teen at the time, and had never been under any Chassidishe influence to speak of.

Tzig,
You are being very childish trying to shtech R'Noach Weinberg for being known as "Noah" (how about all the Hungarian Jews who have non Jewish names?>>)
We all know the real reason you hate R'Noach is because you see him as competition to Chabad. You had quite a few posts and comments where you've said snide remarks. This about a person you never met or knew.Plain partisan hate.
Btw, talking about you and yours: What did you and London "exchange" by becoming Chabad?

Btw, apparently this pic was taken before R'Yaakov Weinbergs barmitzvah, even though he has a hat on.

At the same token, Slonim had a Rebbe and now his son the current Rebbe, who were and are nice talmidie chachoimim, no lesser then any Rosh yeshiva. And they build up 100's of Yungeliet Geonim, so what did he get exactly better in John Hopkins/Ner Yisroel?

A talmid muvhak of R' Yaakov Weinberg wrote a sefer on the 13 Ikarim, called Even Shesiah. In his introduction he brings the story about the cheder rebbe who let a woman be burned to death rather than touch her. He writes that R' Yaakov was only six years old then, but was so shaken by it, that he refused to continue learning by that rebbi, and instead switched to Eitz Chaim cheder in yerushalayim. It would seem that the talmid heard the story from a reliable source.

Its amazing how your ego can get you to sell out your family, and create a blood libel on the way out.And make chasidim(your former family) in to semi Kofrim or semi Maminim.
We chasidim dont need misnagdim to teach us Ahavas Yisroel
Just check out who created Hatzolah(who do save Women in all kind of situations)? or Tomchai Shabos?
one of the biggest gedolim after the war, the Brisker Ruv was against the whole kiruv business, in the world of Brisk let them all rot in hell and assimilate. The whole misnagdic establishment was against kiruv, till they needed Shteles for the overflow of the husbands of Bies Yakov girls.
why did he join the Misnagdim? were they 100% consistent with his views.

Beis Slonim didn't "die". Other branches of the family kept it going. But when RYMW left for America, he went to work, and for himself and his family the Rebbisteve (sp?) was no longer in the cards. I suppose a BanShak with no other dreams or prospects could have gone about restarting something, but by then the interest was not there.

As for the Cheder Rebbe, the story is hardly "frish". It is a VERY very old story that RSYW shared with his family long before we were born. It was not a condemnation of Slonim or Chassidus, nor was it conveyed as such. It was a story about this particular Chossid Shoteh (milishna d'Gemara) and how the young SYW refused to learn a word from him.

I think that a 6 year old is too young to come up with a decision like this, maybe the fire and seeing a person burning traumatized him, but not the part of his rebbe not getting involved. Was he that mature to know the reasons his rebbe did not help?
Did he know by that age the Chazal of Chosid Shoteh.

Yehupitz said...

RSYW never used the story to justify his leaving behind Chassidishkeit later in life, or to make fun of Chassidim. It wasn't about badmouthing Slonim or any group. It was a story that happened when he was younger, 6 or 8 or 9. And it obviously made a roshem on him. So he shared it with his family, and later with some talmidim. I myself didn't hear the story until I heard it from a hesped at the levaya. Does it show he had some sort of moral sense at a young age? Sure. That's hardly a Baalmoifes story. It is what it is. If it's simply too shocking for some people to believe, that doesn't concern me. RSYW did not spread miracle stories or amazing stories from his childhood or adulthood like a Rebbe. So it doesn't matter.

Re: Kiruv and the misnagdim, that was exactly my point: RSYW did not tow (toe?) the 40s-to-90s Misnageid Party Line when it came to Kiruv often spoke out about its importance and imperative, long long before the other Misnaged RYs signed on in their own way. This is known to his Talmidim. And this is part of the reason his brother was of the same mindset.

Re: his gadlus in Emes L'Amito shel Torah, it is a chaval that he did not publish. I've been told that this was b'shitta, but I don't know what or how. But those who heard his diyukim on the Rambam are and were floored by the Emes and clarity of the Chiddushim. A few years ago, a Talmid published a sefer called "Meoros HaRambam" which is a full sefer of his biurim and chiddushim on the Rambam's Hakdama to the Yad. It is so malei v'gadush... And this approach of his was applied to Shas and Rambam k'seder. Those who don't know just don't know enough to regret their lack of knowledge. So I feel bad for them.

I think that all would agree, chasidim (including Rebbes), misnagdim, and modern frum Jews, that chasidim have a propensity for believing maasehs. This can be a reflective of a maaleh in the chasidish derech or not. But it seems the the "fact" of how chasidim relate to maases is agreed upon by all. So it is a bit strange and worth noting, that when we have a maaseh about an adam gadol bizmanenu, that was heard from him personally by many people, chasidim here have a such a hard time being m'kabel that it really happened.
