Looks like we're heading back to the great divide of תשמ"ט

I'm no expert on Israeli Haredi politics; I'll be the first one to tell you that I get severe headaches trying to follow it. But the currect matzav is easy enough for a novice like myself to understand. The Chassidishe Moetzes, after a meeting today, says to Stay Home Tomorrow and not vote for anybody in the ירושלים mayoral runoff election between Shas candidate Moshe Leon and the secular Ofer Berkovitz. Reb Chaim Kanievski says vote for Moshe Leon, otherwise you'll be a partner in all the Chilul Shabbos etc. And if you don't you're מחלל שם שמים. The Moetzes says that they're doing it because Degel is supporting a secular candidate in Tzfas. So it's just basically all politics and spite. But why is Degel supporting secularism in Tzfas and crying over קדושת ירושלים? Beats me. All this comes after the disaster of Round 1, where Slonimer chossid Yossi Deitsch lost by a wide margin after the Degel people didn't vote for him. Not only did they not vote for him, they showed the Agudah that they're twice as strong as them, voting in 6 of their own to Agudah's 3 on the city council. The biggest punch in the gut Ger had seen in a very, very long time. And secretly you might say even some chassidim aren't crying...

Which got me thinking: for a while I thought that were there to be open lines of communication between the Lubavitcher Rebbe and some of his Litvishe detractors, things would be quite different. If the Rebbe would live in EY, as silly as that sounds, then people from EY would have a chance to see the Rebbe and not be sucked into the great web of lies and deceit created by the haters. It would make sense, were it not for the events of recent weeks. No member of the Moetzes, some of whom live minutes away from the Roshei Yeshiva, made the effort to go visit Reb Moshe Hillel Hirsh or Reb Gershon Edelstein, or any tier 2 Rosh Yeshiva to try and tell them that it's imperative that we stay home tomorrow. Conversely, no Rosh Yeshiva went to any Rebbe to convince them to change their mind about staying home, since the קדושה of Yerushalayim is on the line. I realize that here the onus was on the Roshei Yeshiva, since the Chassidim are only doing it out of spite, and what kind of case can they make? How will they convince anybody of the righteousness of their decision today? We'll leave Reb Chaim out of this for now, since Yanky Kanievski would probably not let i n to their zeide....

Some would say that it's ironic that it happened to Yossi Deitsch the Slonimer, a chossid of Reb Sholom Noach, who was a close acquaintance of the late Ponovizher Rosh Yeshiva... (and no friend of Chabad, despite having taught there in the early 40s in Tel Aviv.) The real cynics say that all the Rosh Yeshivas need to do is speak about "Shabbos" and B"K, and all (veise) Slonimer will join them en masse.... Lots to hash out here, including "is Reb Chaim really in charge here, or as the Etznikim say, it's all his eynikel Yanky?" Also, did the Satmar Rebbe had a ווייטער בליק, as his supporters say? although he did allow his people to vote in municipal elections... MK Yisroel Eichler, in his Belzer apologist way told an interviewer last week that since Chassidim don't follow sports elections are r their entertainment, but chas vesholom, there's no animosity between Chassidim and Litvishers, just like fans of one team don't HATE fans of the other team... Time will surely tell.

What's Shimmy Meller up to in his new book on Reb Meir Soloveitchik?

Chortkover/Husyatiner Chassidim are up in arms. In their מחאה they don't mention the quotes that appear in the book, saying that they're not be repeated, that's how bad they are. Something he says there about הרה"ק ר' ישראל מהוסיאטין זצ"ל.  UPDATE: Here is the quote. Typical Brisker לשון הרע באיצטלא של קדושה. No difference than two chassidim sitting over a cholent Thursday night in your local deli or gas station. As if to say that the Chofetz Chaim in שמירת הלשון doesn't apply to them because they're discussing רשעים. The joke of it all is that the son-in-law, whom he calls "רציני" and would go up to the shul to learn after going to the Mikvah on Erev Shabbos was his successor as Husyatiner Rebbe, Reb Yakov of Husyatin, a FIRST RATE MIZROCHIST who said Torah in Ivrit on Hey Iyar. But Reb Meir האט גוט גיקענט דער... because he saw him in the Mikvah... נישטא ווער זאל לאכען....















Not sure why Shimmy sees the need to publish such statements; Is the matzav there so bankrupt that they need to laugh at others just to keep the people in line? 

Then there's Agav piece. Once we're attacking the Rebbelach let's go all the way. After all, they were Mizrochnikes, and Loshon Horah is a Mitzvah when it comes to them. The צושטעל to the Brisker dayan and that story is classic. Apples and oranges is an understatement.

Memoirs from the current Rov of the Edah HaCharedis, HaRav Yitzchok Tovia Weisz. Rav Weisz was a friend of Lubavitch and had many interactions with them. He is currently was married to the widow of haRav uriel Zimmer o"h. Most of what is brought here is "in-line" with Lubavitcher sources, although it does lose a bit of the flavor when put into the drippy Jerusalem Heimishe style. Also, surprisingly, there is much respect shown here to the Rebbe, זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע

די קארלינער און סלאנימער אין טבריא - היו ימים

A little piece of history about the Stolin-Slonim cold war in pre-State Tiberias and how Rav Kook and Reb Moshe Kliers, darling of the zealots, got together to help end - albeit temporarily - an ongoing feud between the two Chassidic groups in Tveria. It's also a good story because it explains why the Slonimers afforded to be zealots. מ'רעדט פון ר' מאטל - נישט די נתיבות שלום און זיינע ציונים. You might say it was because they didn't work for a living and didn't have to face reality. They learned in Yeshiva Or Torah, got stipends from the כולל חלוקה, while the Karliner had jobs. Imagine that. Jobs. Can that have something to do with the Slonimer coming up with the phrase געמל'טע פערד on the Karliner Chasidim? It may pre-date that. The funny thing is they both come from the holy Reb Shlomo Karliner's cheder, so why fight? And as is usually the case, much of this kind of behavior happens today as well. Those who don't work for a living have all the time in the world for קנאות and solving the world's problems.

I do not vouch for the accuracy of the chapter, nor do I know if the author wears Rabbeinu Tam's Tefillin or wide-sleeve shirts. I have read the entire article but cannot say that it is even all accurate. But it makes for a nice read, sans any real Loshon hoRah. I received this from a friend who has very strict standards as far as what he reads and recommends. I post this on his word.

So said the great Reb Shmuel Salant of Yerushalayim. טאקע ניט קיין חסיד, אבער דאך. כנראה אז ער האט פארשטאנען צו חסידים.

And here I thought that I was being "open-minded" and "tolerant" by allowing it here and in life outside the blog. I thought that by allowing others to speak ill of my Rebbe - כאילו - that I was showing them that I'm not "from the crazy ones." So where do I go from here? What copious amounts of Tshuvah do I need to do?

Seems like the more things change the more they stay the same. המטרה מקדשת את האמצעים. We can align with the Maskilim to bash the common "enemy." Chassidim don't listen to דעת תורה, even if it is the Kovner Rov. Where have we seen all of this before?

A new Yishuv in Israel is being planned for the "charedi" ציבור - the Chassidishe Tzibur, that is. It's in Yishuv Charish, between Natanya and Chadera. It seems like ONE Chassidus has been left out. uninvited. Chabad. Lubavitch. And some in Lubavitch are not happy about it. They too suffer from "מצוקת הדיור" and need apartments, they too are "חסידים" - so why are they not invited to take part in this, they ask. I've been in this "business" long enough to know what's coming as far as your comments as to why they don't want Lubavitch, but I'll run this story anyway.... The unofficial Chabad website Shturem has been open and bold enough to publish a back-and-forth about this subject that makes all of see the other side. Only איין באשעפער knows what will become of this. Just to be fair, Lubavitch is pretty big in Beitar, which I think is the same type of place, unless they're trying to avoid that?

They might have good intentions, but the destruction remains nevertheless. Not that I have a problem with the tremendous Simcha shel Mitzvah in Toldos Aron that you see below! It's wonderful! I love it and I wish I was there, it's just that it's not the nigun was intended to be sung.

"Rabbi Dovid Yitzchak Rabinowitz, the Skolya Rebbe. (1898-1979) He was the Author of Sefer Tzemach Dovid.

"His brilliance in Torah was matched by his concern for his fellow Jews".

The Rebbe was a seventh-generation descendant of both the Ba'al Shem Tov and the Zlothichver Maggid. He traced his lineage to Rashi, Maharal, Rema, and the "Sheloh" (R. Isaiah HaLevi Horowitz 1565-1630) Skolye, a town in Western Galicia, had been his home from age four till his marriage. His father, Reb Baruch Pinchos, a Ba'al Mofes (one who effects miracles) to whom Jews from far and wide flocked, made sure to devote time to his young prodigy, to develop his vast potential. At an early age, young David Isaac displayed a rare talent and desire for originating chiddushei Torah. His father, however encouraged him to better devote his time to studying the vast sea of Torah literature. Though he heeded his father's words, Isaac'l could not abstain entirely from writing down his chiddushim and would do so late at night, in secret. In the frost of the Galician winter, he would climb up to the attic and write until the ink would freeze.

Shortly after World War 1 erupted, the Jews of Skolye were forced to flee their city. The Rebbe's father and family made their way to Vienna, where Skolye Chassidus was revived. In Vienna, the Rebbe married the daughter of Rabbi Dovid Moshe Landau, the Burstyner Rav, who had also fled to Vienna during the war. The Rebbe was still living in Vienna at the time of the Nazi Anschluss in 1938. Rabbis were high on the Nazi list of wanted Jews. A disciple sacrificed his visa to America for the Rebbe, though with G-d's help he too was able to leave. The Rebbe left Austria by plane for Switzerland; it was the last flight carrying refugees out of the country. When the Rebbe left Austria, he was forty years of age. By that time, he had written most of his more than twenty sefarim on a wide range of topics.

Upon arriving in America, the Rebbe took up residence on New York's Lower East Side, before moving to Williamsburg in 1945. In 1973, he relocated to Boro Park, along with his beis medrash. He lived there until his passing in early 1979. The Rebbe was an outstanding shaliach tzibbur. His sweet voice was complemented by the feeling of love and awe of his Creator, which permeated his words. His work was revered by Talmudic giants and he received approbations from Rabbi Aharon Kotler, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein and Steipler among others."

Sorry for using a Holocaust analogy, but it's like Paris 1940, when AH dragged out the same railroad car that the Germans were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, and forced the French to sign their surrender there. That's what the "Bakoshas Mechilleh" ceremony here looked like. The only way to make this worse was if the Satmar Rebbe himself was there to "accept the apology." Thank G-d they didn't do that. If I was a Belzer Chossid I'd be terribly embarrassed and ashamed. No matter what I thought of my Rebbe and no matter how much I love Belz and stand up for its honor. What he did back in 1982 was to defend his uncle's honor. In no way was he beholden to the Eida HaChareidis, just like his uncle decided to deny the kanoyim when they requested/demanded that he wear the Jerusalem garb. He could have his own Beis Din and Kashrus system if he so pleases. Now he embarrassed his holy uncle all for his own silly ego, and to please their wives, probably. His and Teitelbaum's. Such an inferiority complex he has? The Satmar Rebbe himself couldn't understand why his shvogger wants so much to meet with him and to make peace. I fail to see what the reason for celebration is here.
