My friends, The לעז on the FR didn't start in New York about Shanghai....

What we have here is a letter from the Gaon Reb Chaim Ozer zt"l to Rav Shmuel Yitzchok Hilman Hilman of London (Chief Rabbi Herzog's shver) asking him to intercede on behalf of the 3 Million Jews living under the Soviet regime. Seems part of the issue was that people were hesitant to give or help, since people said that the Frierdiger Rebbe focuses on helping his own Chassidim. As if that's a crime. But Reb Chaim calls it a לעז - i.e. to defame him. So what was the issue back in 1929? What excuse did they have back then? The letter is part of a greater dossier (!) of letters found in the State of Israel archives.

Who are you? Who are your members? What are your guiding principles? You need to be guided by Torah leaders.

These pictures were published several years in the Kfar Chabad magazine, after shluchim in Russia found it in his granddaughter's house in Moscow, I believe. So there's no great "giluy" here. I just happened to come across it while searching something else and thought I'd share. He lived in Vitebsk all his life and passed away in 5695. So the Rebbe מהר"ש had a great granddaughter in Russia, you say? was she frum, you ask? What was the Rebbe and the Frierdige Rebbe's shaychus to her? Did he have other children? Were THEY frum? I beat you to it...

A brief biography

Addendum - Letter from the FR about the הקריאה והקדושה article

One might say that after this letter is And if it's ever brought up again בין הסדרים or whenever in your Yeshiva/Kolel/Mikvah/Shtiebel you'll know what to say and you'll sound so knowledgeable too! It seems like the Rebbe wrote to Levitt as if he and Segal were not one and the one same - so as not to hurt his feelings.

The whole schism between Chabad and the rest of the (ultra) frum world - Was it all based on a misunderstanding???

In the world of "Yeshivishe hock" much has been said - and by now written as well - about the article(s) in HaKriah veHakedushoh that elicited very strong responses from Rabbinic personalities outside the Chabad world. Supposedly the Frierdige ליובאוויטשער Rebbe  כ"ק אדמו"ר רבי יוסף יצחק נ"ע was to have made "derogatory statements" about the study of גמרא. The truth is the articles were not written by the Rebbe, as is clear from the pen name here, but I he was "to blame" because the publication was under his auspices. Some people would tell you that this is what started the divide between Chabad and the rest of the Charedi world here in America, and by extension in Israel and the rest of the world too. Some of the notables that were supposedly irked by the article were RAK and Rav Shlomo Heiman, the latter asked RJBS to pen a response to the article, which was supposedly not to his liking anyway. This according to MOAG by R. Nosson Kamenecki. That would make sense, since Reb Yoshe Ber and the FR enjoyed a very good relationship...

Rav Haberman was a great gaon and a Rov in Galicia and a dayan in Vienna before coming to New York in the 30's. IIRC he was a Belzer chossid. Here in the US he was Rov in Brownsville in the Rayim Ahuvim shtiebel, which, ironically, is now in Crown Heights... He threatens the editor of HaKveHa"K that if they do not desist from publishing articles like these he will have no choice but to publicly denounce them. I guess his Chassidishe background is what made him give them "another chance," whereas those who had an ax to grind even before the article...The letter is from his manuscripts and may have never actually been sent, but nevertheless makes for a good read. You might say that this too is a "פרסום ראשון".

I see not many of you read this....

י. סגל

קצת אודות הרב האבערמאן -  more

Thanks to Rabbi Shia Mondshein we now know that Aron Levitt had very little - if any knowledge of Chabad, its history or its torah/shittos! The fact that the journal was published "תחת הסכמת הרבי מליובאוויטש" not withstanding. The letter that we link to here - written by the chossid Reb Shaul Ber Zislin, ע"ה, illustrates that very nicely. Here's one paragraph in which he makes his point (for those who can't be bothered to read the whole thing...) Reb Shaul Ber was גאון הגאונים and a Rov in several Russian cities before leaving for Israel in the 30's. What he's saying here is not just "damage control" and partisan politics. I assure you.

See more about the controversy here. In his talk with the Belzer Rebbe the Rebbe mentioned the fact that Reb Chaim Vital writes very strong words about he who learns המחליף פרה בחמור כפשוטו, and that FR said these words soon after his arrival to these shores. The Rebbe goes on to speak about the tummel that ensued and  that the FR clarified that he was only repeating the words of RCV.

Rabbi J.J. Hecht's Yohrtzeit today

Rabbi Hecht's untimely  - so to speak - passing on this day in 5750 shocked us all. See how he tells the story of he was saved from the draft during WW2 by a brochoh from the Frierdige Rebbe of Lubavitch. He also goes on to say that by extension every other Rabbi in the USA was thus exempt... And yes, you guys who know who you are can get in your daily fill of Lubavitch bashing by listening to the last 2 minutes of his speech here, which pertains to the story of ה' טבת. What a fiery speaker!

addendum - letters from the Rebbe Rayatz נ"ע to RYDS

Here's what I have so far. There are more, I just can't post them all. Smaller pictures can be clicked on. I bring a page from Rakeffet's book as well, since one of you asked for "proof." I believe it was Elchonon. Not all of the letters are proof, but they're very nice to see in any case.

This copy of a letter by the Lubavitcher Rebbe זי"ע - written soon after ascending the "throne of leadership" - was sent to me by a good friend. When I asked him if he included me in that category, and that's why he sent me the letter, he very strongly said "YES!" I'm not one to toot my own horn, and far be it from me to do things like ע"מ לקבל פרס, but it's nice to know that my work is appreciated... Unless you say - like some Lubavitchers do - that what I do here does the opposite, it only makes people think worse of Lubavitch and the Rabbeyim/Chassidus. But even so; if what I'm doing here is defending, then it shouldn't matter what the end result is, as long as the right intentions are there... The Rebbe would always וואונטש it should be בטוב הנראה והנגלה. The אייבערשטער always does what it is good. He is goodness. But sometimes the goodness is not visible, and that's why we ask that it be "seen and revealed" goodness. Goodness that simple people like us can see and feel and appreciate.

This pleases the Tzig.

Does this count for White Russia/Chabad?

These are recently released photos of Harav Kook's (יא"צ ג' אלול) visit to the US and Canada in 1924. He was accompanied by  the Kovner Rov, the Dvar Avrohom, Reb Avrohom DovBer Kahana Shapira, as well as Rav Moshe Mordche Epstein of Slabodka's Knesses Yisroel Yeshiva. RAYHK was already back in the Holy Land since 1919 or so, yet he made the long journey to America to help the Yeshivos in Europe. It's ironic that many of those Yeshivos, including Slabodka, are quite unaware of the great help he was in saving their Yeshiva. I would imagine that none of his seforim and writings can be found in any of the many branches and satellites of Slabodka, both in Israel and abroad. Yet, despite the badmouthing and brainwashing that has been going for generations his writings have enjoyed a tremendous renaissance among many Haredim, who see him as a great visionary whose only crime may have been that he has slightly ahead of his time... His teachings are quoted, at least verbally - we have yet to reach the stage where he'd be quoted in a Haredi sefer - and if you repeat a vort from him you may not even get a "gasp!" from the man listening to you... Rav Kook's Chabad connection is well known; his mother was a Bas Chassidei Lubavitch, and many of his writings are based on Chassidus Chabad, as well as MaHaRaL. His adversaries also knew about it too, as mentioned here many years ago. Despite the differences in opinion that he had with him and even the Agudah, the Frierdige Rebbe visited him - twice, I believe - when he visited Eretz Yisroel in 5689.

with RMM Epstein and an unknown figure of authority. Wiki says that it was the Mayor of NYC that he's pictured with. Yet, According to Wikipedia, John F. Hylan was mayor of NYC at that time, and this is not him. So either I'm confusing the dates of the trip or they got it wrong. click on photos to enlarge!

On the porch of the Yeshiva D'Montreal with the Kovner Rov and RMME listening intently to RK's words.

With the KR and RMME. Note that they wore their top hats while RAYHK wore his Rabbonishe Shtreimel the whole time. I wonder if that was some kind of arrangement that they made between themselves...

Ernst Bloch gets his day

I was apprehensive to watch it at first, which I'm sure you can understand. After all is said and done; despite the fact that BMR is a big part of the interviews here, we can all say that this was an OK film, even if Torah Jews are misunderstood by the secular and Gentiles. Compared to the book, which gave a platform for the LubavitcH bashers and dragged in every irrelevant story and MACHLOKEH, this program is gold. Ironically, where I sit now YouTube is blocked, so I cannot "see" what I'm posting. Please do not turn this thread into a Lubavitch bashfest; You'll be wasting your time writing them, since your comments will simply not be accepted.

The one one the left is not the point of the picture... Remember that the Rebbe was all of 54 years old here. Yiddishe Tzores do that to the Nossi HaDor. I remember seeing Chaim Lieberman's picture in the Pashkevill they published in 1989, 55 years later (!) He didn't change a bit. Hardly aged. If not for the white hair you'd think he was still that young. It must be alot easier staying a bochur...

Oh, did any of you see the Tolner Wikileaks?

You wanna discuss it?

Shall I upload it here?
