'תורה מחזרת על אכסניא שלה - בבא מציעא פ"ה א

Yeshiva Torah Vodaath welcomes its new Rosh Yeshiva, Harav Reb Yitzchok Lichtenstein. That's ben Reb Aron, חתן הגרי"ד סולובייצ'יק זצ"ל מבוסטון. You heard it correctly. "JB"'s eynikel is the Rosh Yeshiva at Torah Vodaas. I'm told he's a זייער חשוב'ר יונגערמאן. A big lamdan and a ירא שמים. Seems to be a trend among the young princes of the Soloveitchik clan; they're going back to being Charedi. We saw it with Reb Moshe Twersky hy"d, and I'm sure there are others. We hear that young Yitzchok went right wing already as a bochur. He published his zeide Reb Yoshe Ber's הגדה של פסח. He married into the Grozovsky family of Monsey, so he's at home in Torah Vodaath, I suppose. (Reb Reuven was RY at YTV, for those of you who may not know) And a קנאי to boot. What remains o be seen is can he bring back some of the glory of YTV? The cheder is booming, and even mesivta is doing quite well. But when it comes to Yeshiva Gedola/Beis Medrash the rooms are empty. Looks like it's not cool to say you learn at Torah Vodaath. Or maybe there are too many Harries there? Seems like they need a Gadol that's gonna sit on the Moetzes to run it. A man who's gonna make baaleibatim/gevirim feel proud to know him. A Rav Pam, I suppose. Not sure if that's what they got in RYL.

Even "Jay Bee" annerkenned that Lakewood is the Real derech...

All you יפי נפש that are so excited about this letter and check and see this as proof of the Rav's great middos and support of Torah are getting this all wrong. This isn't him showing that he can support a mosad whose leaders so disrespect him. All this shows is that in his advanced age, seeing what had become of YU, he realized, much like Shlomo Carlebach, that the only true place is the Olam HaYeshivos. SO he made sure to support them in their time of need and made sure to tell the world that they are one of the most prominent Torah institutions in this country. Like the header says: he annerkenned that Lakewood was the emes'e mesorah of Brisk and of Torah bichlal.

למען טובו, למען כבודו, למען רצונו

Tzig, Great job with the blog. A question that you may be able to help with - If you don't mind: Listen here to the story starting at 53:00. It's the story he wrote in Ish Hahalacha about if Hashem created the world lemaan tuvo or lema'an kvodo, and Rav Chaim said lema'an retzono. Except here he mentions that the Chabad sefer was a sefer of the Homiler, a point which is absent from Ish Hahalacha. You and your chevra obviously would know the Homiler's seforim better than me, any idea where this is referring to? I wouldn't mind if you make a post out of this, so more people can potentially provide the answer.

 Thanks

Says the Tzig:

I seem to remember hearing this, or maybe even writing about it in the past. I'll allow more knowledgeable people than me answer the actual question posed here; אבער ס'האט מיר געבאדערט ווי דער רב זאגט איבער די מעשה, די זלזול אין ר' אייזל, אין תורת חב"ד - k'ilu Torah only exists by them. I assume he's saying it like the zeide said it, and maybe the audience at the shiur took it the wrong way ---- but the fact remains, it was a zilzul. ר' אייזל האט זיך נישט געדארפט שעמען פון קיינעם ניט, אי אין לימוד הנגלה און אי אין לימוד הנסתר.

א נייע סאלאווייטשיק "ראש ישיבה" אין YALE

Here's how the family tree grows, as I understand it:

First there was Joseph Ha-Levi Soloveitchik of Slobodka and Kovno. He had a son Isaac. Isaac had two sons, Moses and Abraham. Moses had a son, Joseph, who was the rabbi of Kovno and was married to the daughter of Chaim Volozhin. Joseph had two sons, Isaac Zeev and Elijah Zevi. Isaac Zeev was the father to Joseph Ber (Beis Ha-Levi). His son was Chaim Brisker whose sons included Velvele Brisker and Moses. Moses was the father of The Rav, Joseph Dov (Ber) Soloveitchik. Meanwhile, back to Elijah Zevi. He had a son Simcha (The Londoner), who had a son Zalman Yosef, who had a son Yitzchak Lev (Isaac Louis, my grandfather, who changed the name from Soloveitchik to Salovey when he immigrated to this country from Jerusalem), who had a son Ronald (Azreal), who fathered three children, one of them me! So, my great-great-great grandfather (Elijah Zevi) and Joseph Dov (Ber) Soloveitchik (The Rav)'s great-great grandfather were brothers. That should clear things up, no?

My sources for this are the Encyclopedia Judaica; Shulamith Soloveitchik Meiselman's excellent book, The Soloveitchik Heritage: A Daughter's Memoir; and family legend.

Thanks for the interest in my family.

addendum - letters from the Rebbe Rayatz נ"ע to RYDS

Here's what I have so far. There are more, I just can't post them all. Smaller pictures can be clicked on. I bring a page from Rakeffet's book as well, since one of you asked for "proof." I believe it was Elchonon. Not all of the letters are proof, but they're very nice to see in any case.

In Elul 1941 RYDS and RAK sat on the "Moetzes" together

The wording is a bit different, but it looks like it's the forerunner to the current Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of the Agudas Yisroel. Reb Moshe Soloveitchik had passed away a few months earlier, in Shvat of that year, and his son was asked to join the newly formed Rabbinic body. I do not know how long he sat on the Moetzes, conventional wisdom u\likes to use WW2 or the creation of the State of Israel as the date that he switched from the Agudah to the Mizrachi. So it's not just the Chinuch Atzmai and Torah UMesorah dinners that they sat together... But maybe we can be "מלמד זכות" on RAK that he since he had just arrived to the States from the European inferno that he didn't want to rock the boat yet...

But I can dream, can't I?

1968 Torah UMesorah Dinner

Yes, I too can see that there are 4 degrees of separation between the Rav and Reb Moshe Feinstein, and I'm tickled by the fact that the organizers seated them as such, but still, it's at the same table, בבחינת שלשה שאכלו על שלחן אחד. You would think that the siyum haShas could be the same way, that we can put our differences aside for one night, and for most people it is that way. I just wish it could be that way for All of us.
