So what was the editorial board meeting at the מחנה חרדי like?

Did the Ruv בכבודו ובעצמו tell the esteemed editors at the מחנה חרדי to commemorate the Rosh Yeshiva's 20th yohrtzeit? Or did the very enlightened souls on the board come up with this gem? Is this in response to a bit of a Chabad uprising in Belz? I hear there was a wife and her mother that complained recently about their husband/eidem.

What does the average Belzer mind think of such a cover and article? I guess they confused him with Menachem Mozes; that's how much they know and care about him, even his name they confused. You might say that this is in line with the general confusion that reigns in the frum world today, people cannot help but look elsewhere. Another Satmarish Yiddish publication had Joey Rosenfeld on their cover this week. Chacham Pinto was a big draw in Boro Park a few short weeks ago every self-respecting Chassidishe Rebbe has been to see him in his Manhattan pad.

The Israeli publications seem to have remembered him just enough to stick it to the מחבלים and then forget about him again. Maybe until 30 years.

As far as these round number commemorations in the Yeshivishe world go: Just this Sunday was Reb Nota Hirsh Finkel's 10th yohrtzeit and there was a shtikkel festival in the עולם הישיבות. Whatsapp. At the Mirrer Yeshiva. Reb Chaim came. ס'האט געטומעלט. Understandable, I suppose. Especially with the whole medical history and all. That teaches a young yeshivishe kid that background only matters so much and Torah is more important than easy living and a new SUV in the driveway.

But this boggles the mind.

File this under "לא הי' ולא נברא" please

Apparently this was published (!) in an Israeli newspaper called כל ישראל in honor of the recent yohrtzeit of the late Ponovizher Rosh Yeshiva. How any editor would publish something without taking just 2-3 minutes of his/her time to verify this.... is beyond the publisher of this blog.

The Ponovezher Rov calls on Jews to prepare for the גאולה שלימה after the Six-Day war

I guess he hadn't seen the ויואל משה, otherwise he wouldn't write words like ניסים ונפלאות תשועות ונחמות, mamesh ווי די על הניסים. We all know that anybody who ever read the VM  & על הגאולה immediately was convinced.

פורים אין פאניעוועזש, תרפ"ו

No, they didn't make mixed plays in Ponovezh back then, no matter how you wanna believe that. But it is a man dressed up to play the part. And I would need to say that the Ponovizher Rov was OK with it. That wouldn't fly today either. Somehow we've "progressed."

?"די באבע האט געהייסען "אלישבע

They tell the story of a Jew, who is ל"ע prematurely on the עולם האמת, who once went to the late Klausenberger Rov with a kvittel. One of the names of his daughters was נעמי. This was a Chassidishe Yid, not some Harry from Flatbush, so I guess the KR realized that this was out of the ordinary. The KR asked him: די באבע האט געהייסען נעמי? Like, why did you give such a name?! Chassidishe Yidden are bichlal allergic to modernities such as modern names, it doesn't take much avodah. On the other hand, most Yeshivaleit in America have names like Ahuva, Avigail and Elisheva; it makes them feel like like those Hasids.  Or maybe it's the women that are to blame. They're kinda grossed out by names like Shprintzie and Rashi. But that's a relatively new idea. In the old days people were named for their bubbes and zeides. So I was kinda surprised to see that Rebbetzin Kahaneman, o"h, daughter of Reb Shlaymke Berman, granddaughter of the Steipler, was named אלישבע. And get this: she was named for her Bubbe, Rashe Leah... They made Elisheva out of Rashe Leah, something about some of the same letters. Apparently the ציונים did a number on the Jews in Bnei Berak. It sounded too גלותי to have such a name, even if you were a daughter of the Steipler's son-in-law. I say this without chas veSholom speaking about the nifteres herself, who was a real choshuv'e פרוי

I find it hard to decide what the reaction should be to the implosion at Shas. Rather, the implosion of Aryeh Deri's Shas party. Some Lubavitchers like the idea of Eli Yishai because it gives them a viable option to the Marzel/whatever party that never crosses the line and makes the cut. Others like the idea that Yishai would most likely be more right wing than Shas had become under Deri, which we see now that Rav Ovadia himself now blames Deri for Oslo! That would allow at least 4 MKs to vote against whatever the leftists are planning once they take over. Until now Shas voted as a bloc. The general frum opinion is that Shas is better united because it allows for a stronger bloc against the Bayit HaYehudis and Yair Lapids of the world.

....היו ימים

Ravitz was b'etzem a nice guy. Gafni had a nice beard going then. I guess they told him that for parnassah he needs to keep it "neat." I think had they kept the anti-Chabad rhetoric out of their platform - and it WAS in there - they'd have had a much easier time breaking away from the Gerrer stranglehold on the Agudah. Now, we just look at it as machlokes.

BeHadrei Haredim censors the תולדות of הרב יחיאל צוקרוב ע"ה, a talmid of the Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Tel Aviv

This may not be their fault, the family may have sent it in that way and the poor writer wasn't the wiser, but the story still stands. Besides, they should know better by now than to think that פונקט this detail of his life's story was somehow forgotten or unimportant. The man whom the late Ponovizher Rosh Yeshiva called one of the ל"ו צדיקים was a Talmid of the Yeshiva Achei Tmimim in Tel Aviv, before being "coaxed away" by the Ponovizher Rov to his newly-recreated Yeshiva on the hill. The give away was the fact that they do mention that he learned by Reb Dovid Povarski, who, כידוע, was a Rosh Yeshiva in Lubavitch. Maybe to his overzealous family or friends this was some kind of stain on his record...

'זמן פוניבז

I write this having watched only 20 minutes of it. It's an intimate look at the Yeshiva from an angle you've probably never experienced. Reb Berel, the Mashgiach Kellerman, younger and older bachurim, seemingly speaking their minds. 53 minutes worth watching. Hard to believe they allowed the cameras into these situations! So like I said; I do not know if they get into the dark side of the Yeshiva today.

רבי בערל סר מן הדרך. זעהן אויף צוריק קען מען אויף "צוואנציג צוואנציג." נאך 60 יאר וויל ער גיין אויף צוריק

Discussion Here

I'm sure R' Berel means well, but to compare the Kanoyishe mosdos to the the Litvishe is silliness. For several reasons, both financial and practical. For one, all the Kanoyishe mosdos combined don't equal what they have in Bene Beraq alone, meaning that there's no way in the world that tens of thousands of children, bochurim and yungeleit can be supported from a 'Keren Hatzoloh' like organization. Not to mention the girls schools and seminaries. Sorry. As it is the shnorr is non-stop, imagine if that increases ten or twenty fold. Banish the thought! How much can American Jews already be expected to give? Then there's a more practical issue; The good L-rd blessed the Satmar and its satellites with more gevirim per capita than any other group. And if not the most gevirim then for sure gevirim that are willing to part with large sums of money. G-d bless them, they give. There's no way in heck that the Litvishe gevirim - whoever they are - will support all those Yeshivos, schools and kollelim that now decided to also only be on the take from individual donors, not from the "Treifene Medineh." They simply don't have the השגות that the אונגארישער געבער has. Maybe the Hungarian has a more guilty conscience and feels more compelled to give, whatever the case is, they give. And if no Litvishe go to work then there are no rich people, they'll have to rely on the Hungarians, who are up to their eyes with their own mosdos. Unless they go after the non-religious donors, which is difficult to do with the attitude that they have about frei people.

So why do we say that Reb Berel סר מן הדרך? Very simple. All the Gedolei Yisroel from the Brisker Rov to the Chazon Ish to Reb Isser Zalman to the Ponovizher Rov and Rosh Yeshiva - to you name it, they all said we should take money, so how can Reb Berel doubt them all? And yes, I put the Brisker Rov on the list because we all know that he allowed them to get Gov't funding, even if he didn't take any himself. Only if he leaves the path. (They may have put limitations on how much funding to take, but it was still a good chunk of change.) Which may be Why Reb Berel met Reb Yoel Kahan some 21/2 years ago. He's not with the Olam HaTorah anymore. He's some kind of new Satmar-Litvishe-Brisk hybrid that decides for himself to be Litvish but Kanoyish. Otherwise he seriously doubts whether or not the had the Daas Teyreh or at least the "veite kook" that the Satmar Rov seems to have had now. But if you ask me he'll probably regret ever giving this interview, once he sees what this causes.

That's beside for the fact that it just looks bad that they only reason they'll wean themselves off the funding from State is because they ask for something in return - which is not even REALLY the case. For over 60 years, as long as they were exempt from Army service the money was good, now all of a sudden it's no good anymore? Did we miss something here? a new קבלת התורה perhaps? This law would come into effect even if the institutions took no Government funding. The way people in Israel see it it's about doing your share, whether or not you're supported by the ממשלה. Rich kids also go to the army. I doubt Reb Berel is saying that they should cease taking ANY money, even for individuals, like ביטוח לאומי, קופת חולים, or other stipends that families get per child. Because then he'd be condoning mass starvation... So what would not taking money for מוסדות accomplish, very little if anything. Maybe it would make them look even worse in the eyes of the irreligious. But maybe we shouldn't care since the Charedim will soon be the majority in the Medineh anyway... So the bombastic headline, made to make Satmar look good, perhaps? or everybody else look not so smart? It's nonsense. As far as what will eventually happen in ארץ ישראל? Time will tell. We'll talk about that soon, אי"ה.
