A common thread....

The three major policymakers in America, Rabbis Pinnes (Kotler), Kamenecki and Ruderman, all had one thing in common, they were taught to totally negate the Chassidic movement as nothing more than a country club for simpletons and boors. This important lesson they learned from their auspicious mentor and teacher.

Nathan Kamenetsky in his magnum opus, Making of a Godol, cannot contain his glee when he writes of the fact that so many of the students at Knesses Yisroel in Slabodka were of Chassidic stock. He quotes Rabbi Ruderman as answering the question of "how is is that a child of a Chassidishe home can turn into such a Misnaged? "he (Der Alter from Slabodka) made us drop all that". Meaning that according to the principles of Mussar, the morality of Mussar, Chassidus was a waste of time.

Rabbi SB Kowalsky, in his memoirs, "From my Zeide's House", describes how he as a student of Ner Israel wanted to go to New York to greet the Frierdige Rebbe who was arriving from war-torn Europe in 1940. The venerable Rosh Yeshivah refused. "It's Bittul Torah." Now here was a young man who "shtammed" from Chassidim, had learned in Tomchei Tmimim in Otwock and was a refugee who had arrived a year earlier, but that was no reason to allow him to go, at least not for RR.

There are many more examples, but we'll leave that for another time.

Do you think the Alter was really a farbrente misnaged?

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

Think?

Is their supporting evidence to that?

BTW, It's interesting that Kowalski's father - A devoted Lubavitcher Chossid and an origional Moshiachist, even back in the 50's - was close to, and raised money for R' Ruderman (also of Lubavitcher stock).

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

Do you think for a minute that the opposite would've happened?

HT,
#1 - you don't find it a bit surprising that R' Ruderman would have a strong supporter in R' Kowalsky?
#2 - Yes - evidence to the Alter.

well, Zezzy
RR did say that he made them "drop all that", I don't believe he would've done that to boys from Chassidic homes had he had any affinity for Chassidism.
I guess it shows that Kowalsky had Hakoras HaTov to RR for taking his son into his Yeshivah.

Let me understand this comment. Its wrong for the Mussar movement to attract young men who came from Chabad homes to their particualr teachings.
But there is nothing wrong with Chabad attempting to attract young men from baal habatishe families with a general non-Chassidic background (or for that matter young men from other Chasidic groups like satmar , belz, ger etc) to the teachings from Chabad.
activites.

Per (or is it Pere?)
You read what you want to from my comments.
I said that the problem here is twofold:
1) to use this hate to set public policy regarding Chabad for genertaions to come for no other eason other than what? You don't like them? so they become heretics?
2) That other movements do the same thing, and with worse consequences.

Tzig, bring the hate on!!!!
One thing not known to many Chabadsker mekurovim is the absolute hate and loathing for Non chasidic rabbis, known as ''Snags'
in addition to a total lack of respect for chasidic rabbis unaffiliated with Chabad.Once they have been brainwashed enough, they are then allowed on the 'secrets' :The 'Snags are vile, wicked people, other chasidic rebbes are ignorant shallow 'chagasnikes' the Chabadsker REBBE is among other things:Moshiach, alive according to some AND a deity according to others.
By bringing out your hate AND ingratitude (Dad Spent 8(!)year in Telz, son bad mouthes said yeshiva)you are helping the cause:Chabad is a hateful cult, with a deity syndrome, be forewarned.

HT, I think I'm checking out of this blog. Nevermind the intent, but the actuality seems to be: historical resurection and extrapolation of evidence inorder to prove what bad guys certain misnagdic leaders were/are and how bismirched/non respected/dissed the chasidim are/were. From both a jewish and certainly a chasidish view point one runs with zeal towards the light rather than even begrudgingly delving into the mud. And you are actually diving in with vigor. A history blog is very interesting and all is open to discussion, but this is rather a mud wrestling blog with a devious sign posted that reads "kosher mudwrestling". A yid is capable of so much more; why not try to brighten everyones reality with something that is more yiddish, chassidish, and something that the Rebbe would be proud of...

One Lubavitcher without a chip on the shoulder who does not need to prove how bad 'they' are and how 'good' WE are!
Don't run away, please!!You are making my job to easy!

actually you're just above the belt:)

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

People, don't you get it?! The whole point of these posts is to prove to y'all that the whole so-called Daas Torah is a farce! It's all based on old disagreements and hate! Not to bring up old history for the sake of "exposing".

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

N, is that you?

Anonymous said...

Look, I may be taking undeserved credit, but I want to believe that some of the readers/posters are having second thoughts about the hate espoused in alcohol fogged farbrengens. Some people apparently have enough integrity to see 'sinah, leshem sinah' when it's pointed out to them.
Amshi:In a perverted way you are my favourite poster.Your perverted hate shows the dangers of overdoing some of the chasidic 'kool aid' out there.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

you are.

pipik, sometimes you seem rational, other times, you seem to need a simultaneous colonic and labatomy. Nevermind, the colonic would unclog you and your brain would slide into the toilet..

HT,
firstly, its taboo to out a blogger, right?
secondly, why are you focusing on the lack of daas Torah only in the misnagdish direction? how about exploring lack of daas torah with other chassidim including your own tribe? Misnagdim upset you, o.k., but its not a banner under which everyone can happily play in the tent.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

1) asking a question is not outing. Besides, I just asked if he's the same as another might as well be anonymous poster.
2) Other circles do not claim to have Daas Torah.

dissed, why exactly did you think this blog was created? Have you noticed the antitzemach in the title? Was that enough of a hint? If you want Chasidus, go to chabad.org and Heichal Menachem. If you want defense in the interest of self preservation, you come here. You want to be a self hating chosid, go to tzemach.

Anonymous said...

"If you want defense..." Or is it counter attack? Either way, it's interesting and even fun to watch!

guravitzer,
1. some of us, who comment on mentalblog, may find your "self-hating chosid" observation not well grounded in fact.
2. you might actually owe TA a great debt of gratitude, since prior to being booted from his blog, you too were - it turns out - a self-hating chossid.

'Mah bein bni lvein chami'
Pardon my ignorance, I'm not sure if R'Nossen Tzvi Finkel is an eynikel of 'Der Alter' or not, but he is from the family for sure, besides that he is the 'eidem' (I think)of R'Beinish Finkel, grandson of DER ALTER, son of R'Leizer Yudel who in turn was a Son of Der Alter fun Slabodka.
I know that for Chabadskers it meanS nothing, zero, zilch, however for ehrlicheh yidden 'ibberal' the Finkel family have unbelievable merits in 'marbe toyreh beyisroel' This iS besides the world famous 'Chevroner' yeshiva with about a 1 000 boys the 'other' Chevron with 250 boys and of course the famous Slabodka yeshiva in Bnei Brak. Besides his talmidim opening up Lakewood, Ner Yisroel etc ,etc. I know it means nothing to you Chabadskers' ober in himmel.................

Pipik, is this a fair argument, the fact that you can't use 3 talmidim of one man and decide that they have the only say in America with regards to Lubavitch. Satmar is another story, I mean from a Litvishe standpoint.

Hirshel Tzig - הירשל ציג said...

Shragie, you ask a very fair and honest question. The fact that Torah VoDaas has and had Chassidishe Bochurim is more to the credit of the other Roshei Yeshivah like HaRav Gedalia Schorr, and due to the fact that that's how Reb SF Mendelowitz set it up. Lakewood is not relevant at all because 1) It did not have a large Chassidishe student body in the times of RAK 2) hardly anybody, especially not Chassidishe bochurim, goes there for Hadrocho, they go there for the atmosphere.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that Rabbi Feinstein was virtually ignored by the olamishe velt (as a person and talmid chochom, not as a moro deasra. His psak on Cholov Akum was certainly well kept.)

b) there wasn't much of a choice back then

TZIGELAH,

You seem to be saying that American non chasidisheh roshei hayeshiva were anti chasidesh which was just a manifetation of the Alter.

From a totally academic point of view I ask how do you know? You bring no proof, not even from the gedolim you mention. You only provided 2 quick snapshots of Rabbi Ruderman who came from a Chassidesheh (Lubavitch) family and reportedly tried to circumvent it completely.

The facts remain that Lakewood (Rabbi Kotlers yeshiva) and Torah Vdas (Rabbi Kaminetzky’s) have always had Chassidim in their yeshivas. Torah Vdas davens sfard. Do you know something that these cahsidiesheh guys don't know?

I intend not to be a Kuchlefel its just that you should back up your statements with a little more evidence. BTW you left out a pretty important policymaker in your opening statement of "The 3 major policymakers" (Moses Feinstein).

Friday, September 30, 2005 12:45:00 PM

Shragele,

Those yeshivas had chassidishe talmidim al apam v'al chamasam of the policy makers.

P.S. read what Rabbi Sherer writes about the person really responsible (and UNDERAPPRECIATED)for Torah in America. HGH"TZ RASHKABAHAG RGS!!!

Without him America would have remained AmaReika.
